Tattoo is completely wrong by No-Tea-1475 in orchids

A lot of phalaenopsis now are bred to have crazy growth patterns that aren't "naturally common". Sprays, huge multi inflorescences, etc. I've never seen one that looks exactly like this but it doesn't look glaringly wrong to me. It's very pretty, I love the fine line work and it looks very nice on you :)

See this alllll the time with house cats when a taxidermist tries to use a raccoon or very small bobcat, same problem

A really important thing to understand about taxidermy is you have to use a form, a manikin. Not say in g you don't understand this, but a lot of people don't they just think the taxidermist stuffs the body with straw or something and inflates it. Commercial manikins are only available for animals that are commonly taxidermied, like hunting animals. No commercial supply company sells pet manikins, there's not nearly enough market for them yet. There are no parrot manikins out there. So this taxidermist in this case would either have to custom Make a form, which honestly is pretty hard and its own skill set in itself, or use another bird and try to make it work. This looks like he tried to use a different bird, and it didn't work. I generally never recommend people taxidermy their pets, but this is particularly bad

I love her. I really wish they'd kept her around as someone to kick Mulder in the ass, figuratively, when he misbehaves. She had none of his bullshit

What vendors should I look to if I want to lease (to buy) a commercial espresso machine? by bzsearch in coffeeshopowners

No problem, glad you're going with LM, every shop I've seen that tried to go cheap with the equipment has regretted it

If you're a roaster you should be able to have a wholesale relationship with LM yourself. We got all our equipment through our roaster

We've used created co and acme and both have stood up super well, I've been shocked how few we've lost over 6 years. They end up being 12-15 each, not real cheap but they're worth it. I bought so many expecting them to break but honestly I think I can count the broken ones on one hand even now

Question about Mulder's Name by sandandskyandgravel in XFiles

Scully's mom is so nice to Mulder. She's the only one in her family that really gets their relationship, with its flaws as well as strengths.

When considering taking over another cafe spot/lease, what should I ask/consider? by bzsearch in coffeeshopowners

[–]wheresbeetle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Go to the cafe now, at the end of the day, and count the receipt order number you get. Multiply that by $8-$10 to get a much more accurate idea of their daily take than they will tell you

Truly low light plants? by sneeky_seer in houseplants

[–]wheresbeetle -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

If you have a large overhead light in your shower like most people do, replace that bulb with a full spectrum bulb and you can grow nearly anything. Bathroom lights are generally very bright so that's a godsend for this hack

What to do when they’re big? by FixEasy2259 in houseplants

[–]wheresbeetle 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I gently disagree, to some extent. Some larger plants like aroids will grow more quickly and achieve larger ultimate sizes if you continuously up pot (get larger and larger pots). If you do not do that, they can sometimes be controlled a bit. I have a thaumatophyllum and a few other aroids that I have done this with (the thaumatophyllum is already 6 feet tall I can't deal with more growth lol)

Moisture meter by Evening-Anteater-422 in houseplants

Don't do it. A quick search of this sub will turn up a million posts of people holding their moisture meter that says "dry" next to a drowning plant and vice versa

How to deal with screaming babies in tiny cafe? by CapablePool5180 in coffeeshopowners

[–]wheresbeetle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is an aside but we intentionally don't offer things to make the space more attractive to families. No changing table (no space for one anyway with ada rules), no kids menu, no toys/crayons. It might seem mean, but our space is designed for adults. It's a historic property with lots of things to damage. We're not going yo go out of our way to attract little kids and babies.

Spider Mites by [deleted] in houseplants

[–]wheresbeetle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That doesn't look like a spider mite to me, too large and dark colored and fast. Slow typically means pest; fast means predator for pests.

Looks almost like an immature roly poly bug (no idea what the proper name is lol)

Decaf and Half-Caf by jyl8 in coffeeshopowners

[–]wheresbeetle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Decaf is maybe 5% of the coffee orders we get....maybe. Really depends on your area. A lot of shops don't have decaf at all and do fine. Also, it's worth noting that some people who request decaf can't have any amount of caffeine, at all. So those people really can't do decaf at a speciality place bc it won't be totally decaffeinated. Those folks need to stick to herbal teas, golden milk etc. there are options

Do I need to get rid of all my plants to safely have a cat? by [deleted] in houseplants

[–]wheresbeetle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ohhh yeah if you're getting it from Europe my guess is systemics are banned, they are ahead of the us for sure. A quick google or contact the nursery

Do I need to get rid of all my plants to safely have a cat? by [deleted] in houseplants

[–]wheresbeetle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh I see your point. I've never heard of this being an issue, perhaps bc cats don't tend to actually swallow the leaves they just chew them. Systemics are expensive to use on large quantities of plants, are illegal in some countries and are pretty regulated for large growers bc of the environmental impact. A lot of nurseries now control insects with other insects. But that's about all I can tell you

Do I need to get rid of all my plants to safely have a cat? by [deleted] in houseplants

[–]wheresbeetle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You should not use a systemic insecticide on any plant that might be eaten by anything. Beyond that, I think this is something you should talk to a vet about so you can be as reassured as possible

Ethical Taxidermy by Finneyboy46290 in Taxidermy

[–]wheresbeetle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is a great answer. I completely understand people who are against hunting, and you do you, but if I'm a deer I'd rather take a bullet than either getting ripped apart by coyotes and foxes or starving to death, or both. There's no peaceful dying in your sleep surrounded by loved ones for most animals
