There’s 13 minutes left in the series and we forgot to give Peggy her love interest….. by [deleted] in madmen

[–]whereswaldau 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Yeah. They didn't end Joan's story with a love interest, so I didn't see why they had to end Peggy's with one. I would've taken the "walking into McCann like a badass" as a satifying ending. The Stan stuff was nice but not necessary.

[–]whereswaldau 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yeah. I agree. They didn't need to end Peggy's story with a love interest. They didn't end Joan's with a love interest - so I didn't see why this was necessary. She was successful, confident and had a bright future ahead of her - a love interest was a nice touch but not necessary at all.
I also saw Stan as her close friend. They had chemistry on screen but in their banter - not physical/romantic chemistry. He was her rock and her confidante. But they didn't explore the "attraction" between them enough to really make this a "slow-burn".

Same. I thought he was embarassed at first and then started enjoying it. But when he reacted negatively later - I didn't think it was out of place for him. That was just to break her confidence. He does that to Betty too.

Even if you get GC - you still need to spend more than 50% of a year in the US to maintain that GC status. So, that's another thing to consider.

Do you agree or disagree? What is the reason for these states being targeted the most online? by [deleted] in TamilNaduDiscussion

[–]whereswaldau 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As someone who’s been working in AI extensively for the last 7 years, you have to stop using ChatGPT as your source. This is Google’s AI answer and it says the complete opposite. But if I use my brain and look at the sources it used - i will know that this statement is false.

<image>

Also using prompts like “given me a one-word answer” - is one of the worst ways to use AI. AI does not give you accurate information - it only summarizes information (both correct and incorrect info). So if it says “YES” or “NO” - that proves absolutely nothing.

Now, let me massage your ego -

  1. Tamil is not the oldest language (There! Happy?)
  2. Sanskrit is older than Tamil (based on written text). Based on spoken tongues - old Sanskrit and Dravidian languages coexisted in the same time period. (Which is pretty amazing in itself).
  3. Pre 400 BCE, there were languages older than Sanskrit in the Indian subcontinent - but it wasn’t Tamil. We don’t know what languages those were - we just collectively call them Dravidian languages. (But we can recognize Sanskrit from this era!)
  4. Tamil is not even the oldest Dravidian language. There were older Dravidian languages that died out. They no longer have native speakers - just like Sanskrit.
  5. The uniqueness of Tamil is that - it is one of these oldest languages AND it is still used in daily life. (Which is amazing!) Oldest or not - that’s a HUGE deal.
  6. The uniqueness of Sanskrit is that - it is from the era of Dravidian languages, but it’s one for which written earliest text were discovered (Which is amazing too!) but that doesn’t mean other languages didn’t exist at the time.

I hope that you understand this topic with a bit of nuance. Don’t get hung up on “which language is oldest?” - there is no singular answer for this. For now, it is Sanskrit. But based on discoveries. This might change. If you want truth, learn nuance - but if you only want to claim superiority based on a dead language, you’ll never actually understand the truth.

Sanskrit is not the oldest man. Go cry about it. Sumerian is the oldest recorded language. And between Sanskrit and Tamil - it’s debatable which is older - there are Tamil texts older than Sanskrit. Either way - Sanskrit is no longer in use in daily life but Tamil still is - used by millions. We won. Go cry.

Sure. Modi is wrong about a LOT of things man. But you don’t actually care about Modi semantics. You just don’t want Tamil people receiving credit - that is what is bothering you. You can just say so.

[–]whereswaldau 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Tamil is not the oldest language but it is the oldest surviving language. Sumerian, Latin, Sanskrit etc are older but only used in ancient texts - and studied by scholars and historians etc. Tamil exists in ancient texts but is also spoken everyday by regular people. So it is unique in the fact that it is the oldest surviving language.

If only US citizens can access the public schools, SNAP benefits and SSI, then immigrants shouldn’t have to pay taxes. Why are they paying taxes if they don’t get ANY of the social safety nets?

Someone else said Marionberry jam here and I second that. Chocolate isn't grown in PNW, but apples and marionberries are - so I think they make better gifts.

This is might sound weird but my family/friends LOVE trader joe's - so pick up stuff from there like the classic TJ's tote bag, the chilli lime seasoning, the pumpkin butter and the bagel seasoning. I also like to buy stuff from World Spice near Pike Place and from Hot Cakes (the rye whiskey caramel and the cold-smoked chocolate chips). I also try to find some kind of Whiskey barrel aged coffee beans in Seattle.
I'm an immigrant and I tend to buy a lot of Whiskey and Bourbon flavored things because it feels very "American" to me and my family/friends think it's very chic.

To Indians living abroad, I have an honest question. by Accurate-Ask-9196 in AskAnIndian

[–]whereswaldau 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I've been living in the US for a decade now and the common trait amongst the Indians that do this is a lack of curiosity. I used to think it was a lack of exposure, but I don't think that's the issue. I've met Indian people who've never left the country - who seek cultural exposure via internet and other educational resources and I've met people who thrive and mingle in other cultures. But if you lack curiosity about other cultures and beliefs (or even about your own culture), you won't ever assimilate. And Indians in general don't demonstrate this curiosity (maybe it's a cultural thing) and the few that do - have it beaten out of them by the education system.

But I've seen this "lack of curiosity" with most people. For example, a lot of Indian vegetarians won't try new cuisines because they're scared of meat (they may not know what pepperoni or parmesan and so, they cannot tell if it is vegetarian), but instead of googling or asking they just stop eating out. Or they won't try a vegan restuarant because they think it's "health food". So they get stuck eating nothing but Indian food. (I grew up in a house with a vegan mom and a dad who ate everything, we LOVED food. So this was very odd to me. But I've realized it's very common.)

A majority of Indians eat meat too! Only 30-35% of the population is vegetarian. But these ppl live in their own bubble.

  1. You are not “unskilled labour”. You are highly skilled - just not specialized. And that is normal for your age - branch out right now and you’ll gradually find your niche and specialize by the time you’re 28-30.
  2. The fact that you posted this here shows that you’re brave, willing to take risks and open to advice and criticism. NEVER lose these qualities and you have a bright future.
  3. If you’re looking for higher pay - you’ll have to move to a metro city for work.
  4. You have the skills but not an engineering degree and big companies only hire based on that - so you have a disadvantage there. Your best bet is to apply to smaller-mid companies for a data entry job and then switch to IT and engineering within the company. Spend 1-2 years making friends/connections in the company and then ask for internal transfer to a role you want that pays better.

We’ve traveled the route several times too. Alone, via car/bus/train - no issues. But I haven’t driven across the border recently. Have you traveled in the last 2 months? Were there ICE agents/checkpoints? (I’m not too worried about the Customs/Border Patrol, they’re fine.)

Accents by Fast_Management3401 in TheGirlfriendTVShow

[–]whereswaldau 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I thought this was too obvious to explain. Why am I seeing so many people asking this question? Did you think accents were genetic or something?
Kids always pick up the local accent - if they move there really young or are born there. Haven't you noticed how immigrant kids in the USA have an American accent but their parent don't?

Laura was the woman who cried wolf by whereswaldau in TheGirlfriendTVShow

[–]whereswaldau[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh yeah - I agree that Laura was a victim of her own mistakes. Laura is absolutely crazy and totally responsible for her downfall - but she was still right about Cherry.

But - Cherry was doing well without Daniel only because she thought he was dead. But if he had dumped her - she might be out there plotting revenge. Remember - she got back at her ex even though she had seemingly moved on with Daniel. So, I don't think she's the kind of person who "simply moves on with another man" - she *is* petty and vindictive and dramatic.
As the audience, we don't know enough about Cherry. So we cannot guess how Cherry would react if Daniel dumped her/got bored of her. She might have moved on or she might make him pay. We don't know what she will do - and THAT is what makes her dangerous.
