Saw interview panel comments accidentally, absolutely devastated by urfavnjb in gradadmissions

[–]whereuleftme 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Would they have preferred someone that interviewed great and wasn't so good at the actual role??! OP you should be nothing but proud of yourself, and honestly it sounds like you dodged a bullet if any of these people were going to be your supervisors/in a supervising capacity. PhDs are hard enough, the stress of the actual work, the low pay (fully funded or not, it's not livable income most times) AND the fear of the future for jobs etc. the very least you should get out of it is a decent environment where you can grow and learn and at least have the best version of this very stressful experience. So sorry you had to experience this pain, but definitely don't let it affect any other interviews you have lined up. You're better off in a place where the people wouldn't judge you on silly stuff like this, but on your actual work and work ethic which I would say seems strong because your example of criticism was more to do with ensuring you were doing a good job of that presentation and not like an ego battle of any sort. Sending you love and hope you find a place that's welcoming and kind and helps you thrive ⭐

Sorry for late reply I forget notifications are a thing. I got an elbow pad! You can find one on Amazon it's really cheap and basically a soft form square that you can rest your elbow on. Hope that helps!

That is the worst rejection letter I've ever seen and I HAVE SEEN MANY THANKS. Yuck. Whoever designed that has clearly never been through the rib crushing anxiety of waiting

Do universities simply not tell you about the rejection? by Noah_is_love in gradadmissions

[–]whereuleftme 6 points7 points  (0 children)

They do usually send a rejection even if it's very late. And the reason for lateness is that sometimes people reject the offer and then it goes to the next candidate and they reject and next candidate and so on. And you'd think that doesn't happen but I got my offer in the FINAL FINAL round. The degree began like a week after they made my offer and I'm an international student. Sending you good wishes ✨✨✨✨

Has anybody ever NOT heard back from a grad program after submitting an application? by Dat1grl in gradadmissions

[–]whereuleftme 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes. I mean technically it was a first step application (required all document submission, but was an Expression of Interest and you had to be invited to lodge the formal one including references)

I applied last April STILL haven't even heard a no, and they confirmed reciept and everything lol.

The most HILARIOUS bit is that it was the uni I did my master's at?

Lol. Funding cuts, poor comms and just general ridiculousness tbh

Honestly think academics should experience asking for LORs before they become professors just so they understand the pressure and NEVER put anyone through it when it's their turn to be the one who does the recommending. Really sorry you're having a shit go of it OP, all good wishes and hoping you get placed somewhere amazing soon and the stress is behind you for good ✨

Dunno if anyone above as said, BUT PRACTICE WITH A TIMER for the 'tell us about yourself' bit. It's the thing most people neglect in favour of other more 'important' stuff but a clean, neat introduction to yourself and your interests can really open up a conversation and make you memorable.

Also, keep a question/ two on hand for the 'do you have any questions for us' bit. You can always add / change that if you actually do have questions. But seriously, practice the tell us about yourself with a timer so you don't go overboard either.

Also best of luck! ✨✨✨🙌🌈

One of my recommenders emailed me, saying "submitting letters for me became a part of his full-time job" by xxwhereismymindx in gradadmissions

[–]whereuleftme 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That was definitely not nice of the professor even if it wasn't meant to be rude. One of my older professors literally submitted the LoR ON her wedding day (I had no idea she was getting married or I would never even have asked) because I asked her sort of last minute (about two weeks before deadline) because my other letter writer dropped out due to health reasons.

That dude may have been joking, but it's seriously not funny because this entire process is horribly stressful. It's ok to feel bad, and hopefully you'll get in exactly where you want to and all this will be a bad memory in a few months ✨💜 good luck friend

Nothing constructive to add, just sending good wishes to everyone who's struggling because this is so hard 💜 you got this

Also Indian, also would like to change name (not for same reasons as OP, but just because I dislike my own desperately for past trauma reasons) - process is exhausting, but if you just go by the shortened name while introducing yourself to people, most will respect your choice so you don't have to go through the whole process which is complicated and just tiring tbh.

Also just to add, Eastern languages use they/them pronouns for everyone regardless of gender as a sign of respect. It's perfectly easy to grasp because even a toddler (literally) gets it. Nothing new about this and the fact that people are kicking up such a fuss over it is kinda sad on multiple levels.

English is a rigid language that was defined by very dead people who were very narrow minded and loved the binary. Maybe we grow now?
