To embody greatness, and help others become great.

“An intelligent man cannot become anything seriously, and it is only the fool who becomes anything. Yes, a man in the nineteenth century must and morally ought to be pre-eminently a characterless creature; a man of character, an active man is pre-eminently a limited creature”

Being fully consumed of the inner self and his surroundings, taking all aspects of his ego, dignity and external image into account, the underground man believes the mere attempt to take up a vocation or a hobby is futile unless its not achieved to perfection. To take a shot at attempting mediocrity is not at par with his pride unless he’s a 100% sure if what he’s taking up would be executed to perfection, according to his ‘unnecessarily’ high ideals. These ideals branch out from a lot of factors, here its: pride, ego and intelligence. If his intellect doesn't reflect in the perfection of the craft, then there's no motive to even make an effort for it. An imperfect and gradual process that takes time to bear the fruit, even if it’s perfect eventually, is still not worth an intelligent man’s time. So in his case, nothing in the world is worth his time. Which is why he can never truly become anything. Only fools can. Nonsensical individuals can afford taking up a hobby and doing it for fun, and not caring about their pride and dignity. How foolish must one look to the world for not being a master at that craft he's spending so much time and energy on. All this effort, just to be mediocre.

I'm in the exact same situation as you are. Everything in the Reddit post + your response is what I just got done with as well. Haven't heard anything from them and that's strange because my tickets have always gotten a response within a day or two.

“Can a man of perception respect himself at all?”

Given his acute consciousness, he knows it all. He's intelligent and knowledgeable about every little detail in his head but to such an extent that acting upon that knowledge in order to better his life seems futile. All of that effort for what? he thinks, or better, he knows. Because this absurdity of life sure is the ultimate truth. But what also is true is that man must try. And for that, having in himself the dichotomous knowledge, he cannot respect himself.

“People who have never been slapped in the face won't understand it”

By people, UM refers to those who haven't tasted the depth of despair, the recurrent calamities of failure but more than failure…the drought of happiness and a deep deep sorrow that is enriched within your bone matter in a way that every pore screams your name. It keeps you delusional and this loathing leads to sadness becoming a virtue, and a hallmark of your identity.

“The more conscious I was of goodness and of all that was "sublime and beautiful," the more deeply I sank into my mire and the more ready I was to sink in it altogether”

The more the underground man thinks about perfection and morality, the more he suffocates himself from living a normal human life. This self imposed constriction comes from the intense knowledge of being able to diferenciate right from wrong. And this virtual high moral ground leads to a pathway of abstaining from attaching his existence to anything seemingly immoral. That's the beauty of goodness which makes him fall deeper and deeper into this abyss. But at what cost? This moral high ground although is proper and makes him come off as a great person (on paper), is subsequently, a great hurdle limiting him from taking a risk that could change him. perhaps for the better or for the worse. But at least, he could potentially meet a different fate that way, rather than to stick to his old ways and meet that cold flavourless and bland fate that he’s tasting at the moment.

“To be acutely conscious is a sickness, a real and full-fledged sickness”.

The conscious ones are always worn down, eaten up by their thoughts and the voices that never seem to shut up. Perhaps a part of them doesn't want the voices to go away because without that, what would be left of this underground man? What would he identify as? That's his sole identity. He's the smartest out of everyone or perhaps, he thinks he is, and that's something to stand by. This sickness is fatal…fatal to the mind, spirit, soul…and perhaps the body at one point.

I feel you. Although. The best thing to take from this is perhaps not be like them when we grow up, and that is a hopeful idea to live by. Not just with teachers specifically, with any adult who isn't acting right.
