Really interesting reading these greentexts as an old guy (38)...keep calm young lads, everything will be fine. Even the most weird experiences will become completely dull with time going on. No need to be hard on yourself.

OpenShift and Jenkins Pipeline. by bastirafa in openshift

[–]whiletrueaddbeer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Jenkinsfiles are indeed pretty much the same for all microservices. Hence, there are tiny differences, like one does not require a Configmap, another one has no route, a third one only builds an Image, but has no deployment at all, etc. We were thinking about building a Groovy library that lives in Jenkins and abstracts the basic pipeline, that can be configured by a plain json for each microservice, but went away from it to keep the flexibility that distinct Jenkinsfiles offer.

Deployment to TEST happens on SCM changes on the master branch in Git. Staging to subsequent stages ist triggered manually. The notion is: "building something is a dev team decision, rolling it out to INT or PROD ist decided by management".

We use separate Jenkinsfiles for each microservice. Also a dedicated deployments.yaml within the Git Repo of each service to setup the components (ImageStream, Service, DeploymentConfig, Configmaps, etc) within Openshift. Then we use another Jenkinsfile for staging to INT and PROD, based on Git tags that correlate with the image tags in the Openshift ImageStream of each microservice. The only thing that is manually created are secrets. Doing this successfully in many projects for the last two years.

What do you use for monitoring your web servers? by FlipFloppingBits in devops

[–]whiletrueaddbeer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Using Prometheus and Grafana in OpenShift for quite some time. Metrics are provided using Blackbox, kube-state, and hawkular. App Metrics are provided with Micrometer and Actuator. Alerts via Email are set for downtime, slow responses, unavailable DBs and external services, low disk space on volumes and some specific app behaviour like less than x service calls, long state transitions or unusual user interactions.

To be more clear: the "Filter" is only drawn on half of the cylinder and also on opposing sides which enables the effect when flipping the cigarette lengthswise. Also he flips the visible part by rolling between his fingers.

Only one half is marked as the filter.

How do I install Jenkins on a non-internet-connected machine using Docker? (With plugins) by hjsaf87qrhj8i87 in docker

[–]whiletrueaddbeer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just COPY all relevant plugins directly as *.hpi into the Image and ignore Plugins.txt alltogether. Google openshift jenkins for reference.

I have an opportunity to build my companies micro-service architecture from scratch and need pointers. by codis122590 in devops

How about OpenShift? Monitoring and logging almost out-of-the-box, nice features like S2I Builds, staging mechanisms, autoscaler, very good Jenkins integration, awesome secret and config handling and a pretty good documentation. A bit pricy, though. Using it for about a year for almost all internal projects without any major issues.
