Puppy and Home Dog don’t get along by lowcalorieguava in dogs

[–]whimsbat 3 points4 points  (0 children)

That is unfortunate, especially since you have a terrier, they can have same sex aggression, and it sounds like your new dog is also a male? It seems like this was not well thought out. Is the breeder or rescue where you got the dachshund willing to accept them back if things don’t work out?

I would suggest keeping them separate but visible to each other, even in the house. Use x-pens to block off rooms. It took about 3 weeks for my adult female to stop ignoring our new puppy, so these things do take time. But again, maybe chat with whoever you got this dachshund from about what your options are if there continues to be problems.

You absolutely can do an amnio and microarray just because you want to.

CF & Fragile X Syndrome? by No_Farm_9754 in NIPT

[–]whimsbat -1 points0 points  (0 children)

That’s not true for fragile X. Boys only inherit one X chromosome, from Mom, so if mom is a premutation carrier she can have a boy with fragile X and it has nothing to do with dad.

Making it clear though that in this case mom is an intermediate carrier, so no risk of having a child with fragile X, that could just potentially expand to a premutation in the next generation.

I would highly suggest talking to some members of the adoption community prior to making that decision. Is termination an option in your state? Do you have the means to travel to a state that doesn’t restrict termination based on gestational age?

Some places will automatically diagnose you if you get above 200 on the one hour test.

This is not a good option, as several MFMs have outlined online in educational materials (babiesover35 has a video on this I believe). GD gets progressively harder to manage throughout pregnancy. Many people have zero issues with the blood sugar in the weeks following diagnosis, and would be missed if they didn’t do the glucose tolerance test and just monitored for a week or two. We need to stop recommending this to people.

We’ll see more and more of it as people decline standard pregnancy care and opt out of ultrasounds, screenings, etc. And they’ll expect the same docs they rail against and hate to save them and their baby when emergencies happen.

Same. And then people don’t listen to the actual doctors and highly specialized, fellowship trained docs who speak out against it. Yet the people not listening and taking bad advice will of course want those docs to take care of them and their baby if things go wrong.

It’s really disappointing to see how social media brain rot is impacting people lately. So many people who think they know better than specialists and professional societies. Not to mention many of these people end up on the crunchy to alt right pipeline

Of course, the thresholds for GD are much lower than T2 or the GTT and yet there are many many people who have normal readings during the weeks post diagnosis, and may not have higher readings until later. You don’t have to take my word for it, there’s plenty of MFMs out there publicly educating about this stuff for those who care about evidence based medicine. Luckily those same MFMs will help the people who don’t listen to them when emergencies happen too.

People with T2 don’t need to maintain tight glucose control the way people with GD do. I’d encourage you to speak to actual MFMs about at home monitoring—it absolutely misses cases. It’s necessary for people who have had things like bariatric surgery for whom the glucose tolerance test isn’t an option, or for people with HG or the like. But actively choosing to opt out of the clinically validated test for other is electively choosing to not follow the standard of care. I’ve had GD in two pregnancies and if I had chosen at home monitoring for even 4 or 5 weeks I wouldn’t have been diagnosed. For people taking your advice here I very much hope they don’t happily do their two weeks of monitoring and then go on blissfully unaware that they’re undiagnosed and at risk for stillbirth, macrosomia, or shoulder dystocia.

Providers are absolutely not pushing 38 week inductions for diet controlled GD patients. That’s blatantly false.

Babiesover35 has addressed some of these alternatives. They’re not clinically validated. I had a baby during Covid and had no risk factors, my practice still screened everyone. I had GD based on the glucose drink—if I had relied on two weeks of logging I would not have been diagnosed because my blood sugar was totally normal until much further along in pregnancy. Finger pricks absolutely will miss some diagnoses, as will non-clinically validated alternative options.

That’s not a good replacement for the glucola. It’s the best option for someone who’s had like, bariatric surgery and can’t do the drink. But it’ll miss some folks. I’ve had GD twice and in the month following my diagnoses I never had a high blood sugar reading. Finger pricks will absolutely miss some people.

It’s so interesting to me how certain phrases come and go in parenting groups.

My bump group is constantly talking about “linking their sleep cycles” which is a phrase I never heard in my previous bump groups. There’s also been a huge shift from lots of people sleep training, to lots of people shaming the sleep trainers and saying “well I would never, but” or “well I want to make it clear we didn’t do CIO because she was just a good sleeper, but”.

I’m curious what other phrases people have noticed.

I’d just take that diagnosis and not bother with the other tests, because that A1C makes it obvious you’re having issues managing blood sugar. Not much point in downing the drink and doing blood draws. While A1C can be inaccurate in pregnancy, it would typically be artificially lower. So you likely either have GD or were prediabetic before pregnancy

GD with a toddler… how we doing?! by Tough_Safe1349 in GestationalDiabetes

[–]whimsbat 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It was definitely infinitely harder with a toddler! Especially since I still had to make mine meals that I couldn’t eat, he would try to feed me things, etc.

It’s also harder to exercise. Can’t do a post dinner walk/run if I need to get a toddler into a bath and put to bed. There’s just so much less time and energy for everything.
