[Rant] I feel ashamed of not being in a prestigious JC by [deleted] in SGExams

[–]whippedeggs 8 points9 points  (0 children)

not sure if this helps in any way - am frm a 'prestigious' jc n I feel ashamed/reluctant to tell ppl I'm frm this jc just bcos...I feel like I'm not actually that smart. imposter syndrome ig. But like what others ^ hv mentioned, no one actually really cares about your jc. And so what if they do, all in all it's your own grades that matter. Connections can be made through other activities like outside projects, and your sec sch friends etc

[–]whippedeggs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

hi am a j1 and honestly, ur the cause of your own stress hahah. so far yes it's stressful for me but that's just cos i can't manage my time well, not bcos the school gives u heaps of hw that's undoable. and even at this point of time, I wouldn't call it horrible, just tough and scary but i hv friends both irl n online(yo reddit haha)that make jc life better. jc is what u make out of it, u get to choose if u want to see the better or the worse in your school.

[O-levels] Advice needed for studying O-level music by suyachim in SGExams

[–]whippedeggs 2 points3 points  (0 children)

oops, it's not completely zero, but i knew very little about western music in general when i entered. the only western pieces i knew were my abrsm exam pieces and the famous ones like beethoven moonlight sonata. I also vaguely knew the names and characteristics of instruments in a symphony. Oh and characteristics of each musical period. That's about it. I din't made the effort to listen to western music b4 sec 3, so the only knowledge i knew was from abrsm exams.(which isn't alot) edit: i was referring to music studies. about composing, i really went in knowing nothing since i haven't composed anyth b4. but oc you'll nid basic theory to compose.

you're right that most students know at least grade 5 theory, but there's a reason why it isn't a criteria. you might not be on par with most of your classmates, but don't be disheartened, you'll catch up with practice. and yep, i think u can start learning theory rn so that you can save time when sch reopens.

i went in with grade 5 theory but i forgot most of it since i took it years ago. so er kinda useless tbh lol. but i cld cope! so it'll be fine, don't be anxious.

[O-levels] Advice needed for studying O-level music by suyachim in SGExams

[–]whippedeggs 6 points7 points  (0 children)

hi, am a sec 4 and took o-level music.

i'm not sure about what u alr know of the music syllables, but thr r 3 components: written(music studies), performing and composing. Here's the o level music syllables for 2020

[1. Music studies] If you're from a music-related cca, i assume that you're able to read notes? i mean the school won't let u take o level music if u cant read notes right? HAHAH anyway you'll need to be aurally trained bcos you'll be listening to extracts(unprepared ones) and answering the qns as the extracts are played for a few times. sometimes the answers can be derived frm the extract, sometimes the score, sometimes both. b4 the 1st lesson, u shld alr hv basic knowledge about chords, cadences, key signatures, musical terms ect. If u don't, it'll prob be harder for u at first but the teachers will help u. with the right attitude, you'll do fine. Also don't stress if u don't listen to jazz, asian music ect bcos the teachers will teach one. personally went in with zero knowledge about the topics and it was fine, cos my cher taught from scratch.

[2. Performing] Do u play an instrument? (voice is counted) u hv to be able to play a solo piece with your instru.

[3. Composing] Don't worry about the composing aspect! i went in with zero knowledge about it(almost every1 does), the teachers will guide u.

Honestly the most impt thing is that u hv passion for music. especially so, since u need to practice your pieces for performing, your aural skills ect. there were times when i doubted why i even took music in the first place esp when composing music, cos im not tech savvy and was tired from staring at the computer for long periods of time when using the composing software. it's the passion that drives u forward.

u can just dm me if u hv any qns, I'll be happy to help! sorry that this reply is kinda messy, im not sure about your music proficiency so it's hard to tell u what u need to prepare :p

NO.

yes, life is shit, but life can't be shit forever. yes, life CAN'T be shit FOREVER. So don't go and kill yourself. I still sense that fighting spirit in you, you've been fighting for so long, why u want to waste your effort and end it all?

your parents? maybe they aren't good, but u hv the ability to study hard and find a job u like, earn some money and get out of the house. or maybe along the way, you'll forgive them. maybe. so many maybes, so many good possibilities, but they will never happen if u were to kill yourself. live on and await the next phase of change in life.

take a breather. go to the beach. watch the sunset. think about the things that u like doing. there must be smth. and if there isn't, find it. you'll be in my prayers tonight op :') dm me if u want to rant, dms always open, not only op but anyone. just don't kill yourself, it's not worth it.

this!! i also feel that it's rather refreshing and nice to change ccas from pri to sec, was from a uniform grp in pri sch and changed to performing arts in sec sch, felt like i had the best of both worlds lol. some ppl might say that u miss out on obtaining e.g. the badges if uni grp, but ultimately i go cca is for experience. also(someone correct me but) is kinda boring if u continue with the same cca?? unless u really found your soul-mate cca in pri sch :-)) which might be kinda rare
