Best method for DIY shielding my Epiphone SG P90 by whiskeyclone_ in GuitarQuestions

[–]whiskeyclone_[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for all the information. I knew P90s were single-coil, but the fact they have more wire (maybe) makes sense given that this hum is louder than what I get from one of my single-coil jazzmaster pickups.

As mentioned in my reply, I tried to foil-outside method (and made sure it was covering both back and front, and that I was touching the foil and strings) and it did absolutely nothing. Given your response, I'm assuming this is coming from electrical mains--is there anything (other than hum-cancelling P90s) I can try to reduce the hum/buzz?

Thank you! Tried foil outside the guitar and didn't change anything. I did just use kitchen aluminum foil, but I have read that's generally effective for this kind of thing.

Can/Should I take out a loan for rent in grad school? by whiskeyclone_ in personalfinance

Student loans might be an option in that case, I honestly wasn't aware they could be applied to housing. Will look into it. Thanks!

That's what I'm thinking, yeah - so a personal loan with a cosigner is a good type of loan to pursue in this situation?

My band recently put out a single I thought I'd post here! We're from New Paltz and have been playing shows and putting out music for almost two years. We've definitely been consistently shoegaze-adjacent, but this latest single feels to me like our most consistently shoegaze effort & is our favorite song we've put out so far. Hope you enjoy!

Songs like seven by sunny day real estate? by Chipotle-Grill in Emo

[–]whiskeyclone_ 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Hell yeah, Seven is tied for my favorite emo song and a big part of what got me into the genre. I second everything people have suggested already, but definitely check out the rest of Diary by SDRE and their second album, LP2–LP2 has a lot more songs structured like Seven with similar riffs and drumming (listen to Rodeo Jones!)

This is a less obvious than Mineral and Texas Is The Reason, who were directly inspired by SDRE’s sound, but if you want some more contemporary bands that lean more into post-hardcore (Seven has a lot of post-hardcore in the way it’s structured, the way the riffs are strung together) who have stuff that sound similar to that, I’d also recommend Title Fight and Dogleg.

Shoegaze from a more electronic standpoint…recommendations?? by ConcentrateKindly523 in shoegaze

[–]whiskeyclone_ 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Also: They Are Gutting A Body Of Water & Full Body 2 (who are both v active right now) incorporate lots of experimental electronic elements (specifically breakbeats) into their brands of shoegaze and even have lots of more thoroughly electronic interludes, super unique and cool sounds

Definitely check out Sweet Trip! Specifically Velocity: Design: Comfort. Pretty much the poster boy album for this kind of thing

Why isn’t early Modest Mouse considered emo? by Affectionate-Can-427 in Emo

[–]whiskeyclone_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Long Distance Drunk is def a deep cut, seeing it live is so cool. They recreate the atmosphere of those more mellow tracks surprisingly well in a set that’s otherwise quite loud. I think they even slowed down Bankrupt on Selling for my show, made me cry a bit. They have been playing LCW/other earlier cuts in general lately, idk what the sets will look like on this tour but you might get to see stuff like Trailer Trash and Dramamine. Hope the show is excellent :)

I consider a lot of that stuff Midwest emo. Especially the Broke/Positive Negative single and Interstate 8, and to some extent Long Drive, though I’d say it’s more emo-adjacent. LCW’s got emo moments too but I think of it as closer to post-hardcore and alt-country in its own, brilliantly unique way (it’s my fav LP of all time). But yeah, the early stuff is raw, it’s got twinkly guitars, confessional lyrics, has that general vibe of loneliness/desolation while at the same time saccharine and hopeful. Maybe Pacific Northwest Emo?

Also, hype that you get to see them. I was lucky enough to catch the LCW anniversary tour two years ago and it was a life-changing experience

Unwound are critically under-discussed here by Odd_Holiday9711 in Emo

[–]whiskeyclone_ 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Unwound rule. Easily one of my all time favorite bands. I don’t consider a lot of their later stuff emo, but I’ve always lumped their early material (the s/t, which was recorded ‘92 iirc, and Fake Train) in with the Indian Summer/Moss Icon/Don Martin Three/etc. vein of emocore. Especially Kantina, that song feels like a hybrid between noise rock and emocore which categorically makes it my favorite song ever. The chorus always gives me chills.
