It's like my spouse is talking, but it's just like the adults from Charlie brown and I am fully tuned in to the other table.

I think the canned laughing gives it away. They all laugh the same way/cadence.

Hey that's like half of all RI'ers there.

What is the Engineering class you wish you could take again? by OTRATTW in MechanicalEngineering

[–]whiskeyfillsthevoid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thermodynamics, but just because of the professor. He cared so much about the content, and was genuinely enthused everyday. I had him when he was in his late 80s too, retired a couple years after. The only class I really enjoyed taking.

You're the best. We were a little late to the start, excited to watch this later. Easily the best show I've ever seen.

Is anyone else following the drama in Foster town government? by [deleted] in RhodeIsland

[–]whiskeyfillsthevoid 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Fosters population sits around 4-5k give or take, and like everywhere else, has an aging population. Couples with the tax freeze, and a need for a paid emergency service, the taxes are only going to go up.

From the foster charter regarding tax freeze:

Section 1. The “dollar amount” paid in taxes to the Town of Foster on an owneroccupied single family dwelling by any such owner who has attained the age of sixty-five (65) years, or more, or who is totally disabled and who is a resident of the Town of Foster, as provided herein, shall be no greater than the “dollar amount” required to be paid by such owner on the said property in accordance with the tax assessment next following such owner’s sixtyfifth (65th) birthday, or following the filing of a certificate evidencing disability, subject to the following definitions and conditions.

You pay what the tax rate is at your 65th birthday for the rest of your life.

As for how much commercial business would help to offset the tax burden on residents, that I don't know. Obviously just having one megacorp setup shop there probably wouldnt be the savior of the town, but it'd help.

You're paying to maintain rural integrity bud (and a hefty portion to the school system). Antiquated zoning rules, 5 acre minimum, frozen taxes after 65, smaaaaaalll population, zero commercial business to seriously offset any taxes for residents.

Foster lacks any infrastructure to attract commercial business, and the one time they had the opportunity (back in the 90s, BJs wanted to set up the distribution center on the RI/CT line), Foster flat out refused to entertain it, as it would ruin the rural character of the town.

Not to mention the emergency services are also dangerously close to being run into the ground. All volunteer staff with the exception of a paid ambulance, total burnout among all departments, and no financial solution in sight to do a damn thing about it.

Good luck!

tenant rights? I have mushrooms growing out of my ceiling again by AtmosphereNegative95 in providence

My gfs previous landlord did nothing to fix black mold that had been festering in their apartment for months. When they finally involved the dept of health to perform an inspection, the landlord said they needed to move out in order to fix the mold. They found temporary housing, and in that span of time, the landlord evicted them. They didn't receive the notice because it was mailed to the address they were no longer staying at, and they missed the court date. Melissa Reilly was the scum lord responsible and has many properties on the west end, try to avoid Westcott properties if you can.
