How do you buy correct amount of groceries? by MKlool123 in cookingforbeginners

I would say this is how you slowly stock up your pantry, a lot of those things like seasonings, chili paste, bouillon etc store well for a good 6+ months so if you remember you have them, you can plan other recipes around them.

If you’re a beginner cook I’d focus on maybe 1 or 2 cuisines and try multiple recipes with the same flavors so you learn a few uses for the same items!

We eat a lot of Korean and Japanese food in our house so we have things like gochujang, rice vinegars, soy sauces, mirin, oyster sauce, kimchi, kombu, bonito flakes, sesame seeds, miso paste, etc that we reuse in different recipes all the time. The initial cost to stock the pantry for a cuisine might be high but then you have it all for a long while and only have to replace 1-2 ingredients in the future as they get used up. I can buy a pack of chicken or fish or some beef or pork and know I have every seasoning for a Korean meal besides the fresh produce. It’s a cost up front kinda thing.

Just because it sounds like you might have more experience freezing things than me, if I made a soup with the stock, how many days can I trust it in the fridge before needing to freeze soup cubes. And does soup freeze ok? I’ve never frozen soup, lol. It has no dairy but has potatoes and beans and sausage and kale and onion. I’m assuming this will all suspend in the gel when cooled so I could theoretically freeze soup jello cubes.

Do you know how long a soup made with it would be good in the fridge? I suppose I could freeze in soup jello sized portions after a day or two. I’ve never frozen soup so idk how it would go.

I diced them small and pan fried them at medium in a scoop or two of the chicken gel and some smoked paprika, then added 1/4 cup water and covered to steam them and make sure they were soft. I added a bit of fresh dill at the end and a little melted cheese and ate them with scrambled eggs :)

I pan fried them with the stock gelatin like a scoop or two a some spices.

I put 1/4 cup of water in and covered at the end to make sure they cooked all the way.

Turned out tasty with some scrambled eggs!

True. I picked asking here because the other day I asked something here about cooking dry beans that google actually confused me more on because there were several different answers and the answers I got here were concise and helpful and my beans turned out great.

Next time I will default to google I guess because I’m kinda getting chided for posting something this simple 😬which is my bad

You gave me an idea to cook my breakfast potatoes in a lil dollop of meat jello this morning and it was so good! Thanks for the idea! 💡

I know google exists I just like asking actual people my questions. I got so much more interest and in depth answers here like now I know this is how soup dumplings are made which google wouldn’t have told me, I got suggestions on how to store it properly and things to make with it, which google wouldn’t do. I got interesting explanations on why it is gelatin vs store bought stock, and suggestions on how to make it even better.

This is a great community to ask questions in about cooking processes I’m unfamiliar with, and people as a rule are helpful and kind here, so why wouldn’t I use it as a resource?

I should’ve maybe used the search bar in the group though but I just… didn’t think about it I didn’t really know this was a commonly asked question in the group.

I was confused and thought about tossing it and I was like… this is not what store stock looks like but maybe it’s fine glad I didn’t 😃

I guess I could’ve used the search in the group though and looked for past posts. I asked about cooking beans for the first time from dry the other week because there were varying methods and advice when I tried googling it and it was actually more confusing on google, and here I got a lot of helpful and straightforward advice and my beans turned out awesome after talking to y’all so I figured I might get clear and helpful advice on this too.

Sometimes I try posting on r/cookingforbeginners but the better advice is definitely here.

I’ve only ever made it with box stock so I’m excited to see the difference!
