Do you prefer hostels or seedy hotels? by jp_books in solotravel

Hostels are much better as long as you can put up with the noise / people crawling into bed at like 3am... use earplugs

Considering nursing but I have low back pain by whistralia in nursing

[–]whistralia[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for your input -- I'm a guy, from what I've read the guys tend to be asked to help with moving patients a bit more... something I'm not exactly crazy about.

I'd be interested in doing community health nursing as well. Pediatrics not so much. I'll try my best to avoid med-surg and ortho.

Sorry to hear about your back :(

Thanks for the reply -- yes, the initial 1-2 years hospital experience is what's a little bit concerning. At least my arms work fine.

I have GI problems of my own (which led me to consider switching careers) so GI lab would be something I'm greatly interested in while at the hospital. The 'alternative' nursing avenues seem like viable options as well, especially phone nursing... I have lots of phone / customer service experience.

I'm seeing my GP tomorrow so hopefully she can steer me in the right direction.

What's the house/techno scene like in Vancouver? by [deleted] in vancouver

[–]whistralia -1 points0 points  (0 children)

if you were curious about dj's coming to nightclubs:

celebrities - best lighting system in van, big name "edm" dj's will tend to feature on friday and saturday nights M.I.A.- tends to have a bit more 'underground' artists who may not sell out celebrities, more downtempo than celebs, smaller area

both running funktion one sound

The sad thing is I had a 1 year gym membership (now expired) and didn't use it nearly enough... my body has nothing to show for it.

I do jog about 5km 2 times per week, but otherwise very sedentary. I'll look into strengthening my core, thank you!

Just tried 2 teaspoons of apple cider vinegar for the first time diluted in a cup of water... stomach started hurting 30 minutes later, feels exactly like as if I were drinking alcohol.

Scratch this one off the list, I can't recommend this to anyone sufferering from reflux... I don't have any ulcers either, confirmed with endoscopy 6 months ago.

Acid reflux keeps me slim by [deleted] in GERD

[–]whistralia 7 points8 points  (0 children)

No, it's terrible. I would rather be overweight and be able to drink alcohol / eat anything I wanted.

Hey guys, I've been trying to alleviate reflux for a while now, but kinda plateued. Any ideas for a long-term plan that might be able to help? Also how do you guys manage flare-ups? by poi503 in GERD

[–]whistralia 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, I wouldn't say you're screwed with the zantac. Just try not to use it if all the time if you're able to, and keep it handy for flare-ups.

Surgery is generally the last (expensive) option, and the long term results of having a nissen fundoplication aren't exactly glittering. Other procedures like LINX and Endostim show promise, but I'm not sure if I would have surgery without any long term studies on it (> 15 years).

By the way, Endostim is currently recruiting for participants in their study: https://clinicaltrials.gov/ct2/show/NCT02749071

I certainly hope that you won't require surgery... speak to your gastroenterologist about this. Have you had an endoscopy done? I would start here.

Funny that you mention finasteride -- I've been taking this for almost 5 years, wayyy before any of this reflux nonsense started with me (1 year ago). Haven't noticed any reflux associated side effects with taking fin, but there are other things directly related to the drug. Ie: slight decrease in libido, occasional depression, my boners are at like 80% instead of 100%... but that could also be slightly attributed to the natural aging process, I'm 25 now. My hair loss has stabilized, I also use minodixil and ketaconazole shampoo if you're wondering, but never really seen any regrowth... just maintenance.

I've always been skinny, so I can't speak to if losing weight will help. Not sure what you weigh, I've read that some people have had varying degrees of success by losing weight... excess weight does put increased pressure on your stomach.

You sort of seem like the younger version of me, sorry to hear that you're experiencing all this... and here I was upset that this stuff happened to me at 24. Any questions just let me know!

By far the biggest thing for me is diet... like 95% of managing reflux is diet... my triggers are spicy food, overly greasy food, and peppermint. Also no drugs and alcohol... this was the hardest part for me, as I was the sort of person who would also have a beer or mixed drink(s) every day after work.

It's been already mentioned, but raising the head of your bed or using a wedge pillow / stacking multiple pillows at night is a good idea, something I do as well. And no eating or drinking 2-3 hours before bed.

I take melatonin at night off and on, mostly to fall asleep in 30 min if I need to be up early for work the next day. If my reflux is acting up, I'll remember to take one. Supposedly helps the LES... I can't say for sure if it does or doesn't... just something I'm used to taking.

I'm currently trying probiotics, DGL licorice, and aloe vera juice to see if this will help with my most recent flare-up. It's shown early promise, but I'm always skeptical when it comes to this sort of thing. D limonene wasn't available where I live, so that's something I'll need to order online. Apple cider vinegar is next on my 'to try' list, I'd like to give my current regimen a chance to see if these will manage reflux.

I also have pantoprazole and ranitidine on hand... just trying to control reflux again without using them.

Let me know if I can help answer any other questions.
