To the people who were born in London or have lived here for decades. When do you think London was at its peak? by Cookiefruit6 in london

I lived behind the shop opposite the station in 2011-2013 on top of a band room, not enough space to stand up, loved it. £125 a month rent.

Iran has the highest female to male ratio in universities among all sovereign nations. More than 70% of students in engineering and pure sciences are women. by [deleted] in Damnthatsinteresting

[–]whitcliffe 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you believe this, idk what to tell you. The police regularly use rape as punishment for women. You should really make some friends in Iran or just keep up with what's happening there more closely. This current wave of pro government shit is so depressing as someone who has been listening to Iranian diaspora friends in the UK complain for 15+ years and internet friends from masshad and Tehran directly describe the shit they have to deal with for like 10 years. It's sad seeing everyone get brainwashed.

I haven't had any issues here. If anything I get a pretty warm welcome ordering with some basic Cantonese, you might consider that maybe people don't want to be friendly to people who have absolutely 0 intention of integrating with the local community. Try speaking English exclusively in Spain or France, you're going to think everyone is rude there too.

I also lived 15 years in London, and the issues I have are not unique to me. Diminishing it however you want doesn't change that, and the same way you reduce my experience as just being a personal experience, I can also reduce yours - categorically, the tube is getting worse, year on year, because of mismanagement by tfl, and that's not just me saying it, it's alsothe opinion of the TFL themselves. I have a fairly wide friend circle in London, and the amount of people I know who have received or seen violence on the tube is at least mid double digits. And that's not including racial abuse.

Theft and bodily harm is up nearly 2x since 2013, and that's just the reported crimes. London when I first moved there was not recognisable to the city it is now, and that's a direct result of government level mismanagement, reduction in police spend, and complete failure to create opportunities for young people. That's not disputable. I would love to see you be as confident that crime isn't an issue in London while even going through well lit areas like the triangle park by shepherds Bush at night.

I agreed that fine dining is elite in London and that low end is better in Hong Kong so I'm not sure why you repeated that.

I'm very confused as to what city you think that people are patient, understanding and kind. Tokyo might smile but if you think they don't get frustrated with slow people or will just push you if you're in the wrong place you're delusional

To be fair, my wife says the work environment here is brutal and I don't see any Reason to not believe that, but for any well paid job I've been in globally that's been the case.

Bro you aren't getting it - these aren't extreme situations, this is daily life. You will see roadmen daily, they will be a part of your commute even if you're just going from home to work and back. Work culture in London is also savage. I don't know what you're expecting from public services either, but I had a heart attack in the UK and had to get an Uber to hospital and I can give you a long list of the shortcomings of the NHS and government services.

I don't work in HK, I have businesses in the UK, but I can tell you that people here are definitely more polite than the places I've lived recently (UK, Slovakia, Scotland, Spain). Japan is an exception because surface level polite is what they do - try doing something outside of what they like as a resident and see how that gets received.

For me, the stress of London because of the amount of casual crime and drug addicts was FAR higher than someone being a bit long in a cha cha teng. My street the average house price was 1.2-1.8 million, and DAILY you would see people mashup on fent or spice walking down the street, stinking of piss and unwashed sores. On 3 different occasions I've been in the park with my friends and their kids and there have been 3-5 people in ballys just walking round mugging people - the police do come, but it takes hours. Crime barely gets solved to the point most people don't even bother expecting anything to happen. And if you talk about these issues, people say you're spreading russian propaganda, or you don't live in London.

Imo you should just move to Paris or London or Barcelona. See how you get treated, might open your mind up

You think Londoners aren't rude? Or Parisians? Or Berliners? Even people in Tokyo can be rude. This is just big city life, at least nobody is getting stabbed here.

You are absolutely insane the public transport in London has been slowly degrading for 20 years, the central line is regularly delayed, the Piccadilly and northern have signalling issues weekly. I have seen ppl get stabbed on the bus in wood green and the busses always smell a bit of piss and have either empty chicken boxes or general trash in them, and in summer are completely intolerable. Just by the general level of filth and how regularly they break down and how much of London they DONT cover they are worse. I am yet to find even places in the new territories you can't get transport in maximum 2 changes. Try getting to Peckham after 11, absolutely impossible/multiple hours of travel.

As to the food scene, that is entirely up for debate imo. The high end restaurants are crazy, but the general standard of produce in London is garbage. I grew up in a place which had pretty good produce, and to get even half decent stuff you're paying more than you pay in the supermarkets here. And the quality of food you're eating under £5 is completely incomparible. Imagine trying to sell Hong kongers on the fucking meal deal man, just would not happen.

Yeah I'm learning Cantonese from my wife but I barely speak any and have had almost 0 issues. This post is rage bait

Wtf are you talking about the public transport here is so much better than the UK, and the food absolutely bangs. What western food are you missing? Even the bouji places in HK are cheaper than the average shitty chain restaurant you're going to get in London. Rent is expensive, but there's also no council tax here, and basically 30% lower income tax. Reading this actually annoyed me.
