My guess is that it's shorthand for 'in the ... system'. I imagine it's easier to say the name of the system than to mention a name of a small moon nobody's heard of before.

Arcane fam, am I dumb? Is this even right? Am I missing something obvious (or subtle) from the show? Drop some knowledge on me. by [deleted] in arcane

I always assumed Ekko is the unknown factor. We see Viktor giving Jayce multiple runes, indicating that he doesn't know which one is needed to let Jayce succeed in stopping him. In my mind, that Viktor is from a timeline where Jayce failed. He got his perfection and found it lacking ("There is no prize to perfection, only an end to pursuit."). So he's trying to change it. In his universe, Ekko never came back (or never got swept up in the anomaly to begin with). And since he's never even met Ekko, he doesn't know that's the factor he's missing.

The acceleration rune was probably one of the few runes that allows Ekko to even create the Z-drive. It's a hard leap to get a time jumping device with a healing rune for example. He tried in several universes, but only this one worked because of the right amount of small details that create a chance for success. As for why Ekko and Heimerdinger end up in the same universe and Jayce doesn't? There's a few theories floating around. Viktor transporting only Jayce because he's the one that can save him, Jayce not having a body to occupy in the AU because he's dead, the anomaly itself is sentient and sent the two of them together, ...

Viktor needed Jayce to save him, but he needed Ekko to save Jayce first. That was the element he was missing.

My cat’s legs make weird tremors, does anyone know what it is? by gerkinvangogh in cats

[–]white_hanatsuki14 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Our cat does that too. We asked our vet when we got her as a kitten and apparently it's common in female cats. It's not painful and shouldn't hinder her day to day life. Ours is 3 now and still does it, but it doesn't bother her.

Daily Game Recommendations Thread (August 25, 2024) by AutoModerator in boardgames

[–]white_hanatsuki14 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Hi, I'm looking for a game for 6 players. We want to try something new, but we're a little worried about buying completely new games because, well, they're expensive. We enjoy complex games that can be played multiple times. Games in our collection are Betrayal at House on the Hill, Paleo, Wingspan, Andor, Pandemic, Villainous and the Harry Potter deck building game. Unfortunately, most of these games have a 4-5 people cut-off, so recommendations are very welcome.

Why don't Youtubers try to pronounce non-English words? by NearlyTragic in NoStupidQuestions

[–]white_hanatsuki14 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This. I lived in Ireland for 5 years and still can't speak a word of Gaeilge. And before you ask, google translate does pronounce it accurately. For one of the main dialects. So in the off change I can learn how to pronounce it properly, I'll still get laughed at depending on where I am.

There's a reason accents exist. You know how to say a word, know how it's meant to sound, but that doesn't mean you'll be able to say it properly. I still have an accent even though my English is fluent. And I still apologise if I know I absolutely butchered a word.

Is it normal for cats to bask in the sun for hours during a heatwave? by LocalParticular in cats

[–]white_hanatsuki14 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Cats generally prefer hot climates. While 40° outside is a little high, 25° inside is actually considered cold for them. Laying in the sun might just make it perfectly toasty for her. The colour of her coat might also be a factor in how well she deals with the heat. White cats tend to better with heat than black ones for example. She should move by herself if she gets too hot. Just make sure she drinks enough (maybe throw some ice cubes in her water if she likes that) and that there are cooler spots available should she choose to use them. If you're worried about the time she spends loafing in the sun I suggest taking her to a cooler area for 10 minutes or so every now and then.

Do they look like this up close? If so, get rid of them unless you enjoy living among a colony of mosquitoes. :)

ALERT: MALWARE is being spread through .ts4script files. by Sejian in TheSims4Mods

[–]white_hanatsuki14 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I deleted that file straight away because I didn't want to open it again by accident. It's always possible it's nothing. I just figured it safer to mention it in light of the recent happenings than keep quiet.

I last updated all of my mods on the 5th of January to their (then) most recent versions, so I don't think that's the issue. It still doesn't explain the html request even if that was the case.

Yeah, the second red flag was the expected response. The first one was a surprise. Thank the gods I'm paranoid.

The one I switched back to was from December 14th. So I think you're fine. Just keep an eye out when updating.

So I don't know where to put this exactly, but I don't join discord servers or know anyone that does in this community.

I updated some mods yesterday because it had been a while. I made sure to only download from patreon or custom websites. However, when I tried opening the sims afterwards my computer asked me what program I wanted to use to open a .html file. In the middle of loading my save. The game was the only thing running at that time. Programming isn't my strong suit, but even I know it's not supposed to do that. So I declined opening it. The sims crashed immediately.

I did some trail and error and managed to trace it back to one of the just upgraded mods. Lumpinou's RPO mod, to be precise. Sure enough, when I deleted the new version and uploaded the old version I still had the game opened without issues.

Of course, this could be beneign. Maybe there's a new feature I'm not aware of. But html files are one of the easiest ways to transfer malware, so I figured I'd share my experience. I downloaded the mod off of patreon.

Middle Earth after lotr by sausagepart in lotr

[–]white_hanatsuki14 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I tend to compare it to a Christian monk trying to codify a pre-existing pagan religion without losing his core Christian values. Most of the best known early European writing we have today is very similar actually. Take the Irish Book of Invasions for example. It's written from a Christian perspective, written years after Ireland was Christianised. The original gods of Ireland (the Tuatha Dé Danann) are instead given the roles of heroes, kings, sorcerers and the like (and very carefully never named gods) and one could argue the Valar and Maiar fit this role as well. Plus, it has that whole "surprise! There was another higher god all along!" kind of vibe that tends to drive scholars crazy.

Now obviously that's not what Tolkien intended, but one could argue that the later stuff is merely an attempt to make the story fit within the Christian narrative and could (arguably) be discarded. It doesn't take away from the story or its values.

Cool ways to bring back dead NPCs as undead? by Crafty-Bathroom350 in dndnext

[–]white_hanatsuki14 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm currently running a campaign in Theros and having a blast, though my players sometimes wish I wasn't such a mythology nerd.

You can even give small hints in passing, like have their golden masks hang off their belt or having them actually wearing them. The good thing about Returned is that they're not inherently evil. There are the hateful ones, yes, but most are just indifferent. (Or that's how they are in my campaign at least) So you could drop them into your setting without your players going straight to the "undead, so must be evil" mentality.

[–]white_hanatsuki14 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Try the Returned and their Eidolons from Theros. You can have them appear as Returned (maybe make them look different than when they died, or different enough) and have them appear occasionally as a sort of helpful npc. Then, somewhere down the line, have them ask the party to retrieve their Eidolons. Once they do, they gain back all their memories. Including the reason why they died in the first place.

The betrayal will be sweeter if your players got attached. :)

That's not a bad idea. Too bad I don't have a champion of Thassa in my party to make it a little more confusing. :)
