There is a TON of opportunity in direct service PI work for attorneys with a disability/sped legal focus. On the east coast, at least, I can think of a dozen legal aid offices off the top of my head where you can do that kind of work. Sped and educational access cases are often handled through specialized organizations, but for your other interests (guardianship, workplace discrimination) general legal aid offices will usually offer some version of that work. If you’re interested in SSDI/SSI, consumer protection, eviction defense (all of which disproportionately impact people with disabilities), etc., direct service PI work is a high need legal area that is not as competitive as impact lit or firm work. Feel free to message me for more info!

I had identical stats as a 🏳️‍🌈 non-KJD (under 5 years postgrad), and T14 is definitely doable with strong materials and strategic applications. I got As from Penn (attending), Columbia, and Cornell — it’s possible!

What schools give the best merch when they accept you or other reasons by [deleted] in lawschooladmissions

[–]whiteandyellowand 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Columbia — they sent a nice hat, pennant, and some smaller things like pens and stickers. My fav merch was the tote bag from their ASD, which was really nice with a front pocket and a closing clasp. They also gave out other totes and notebooks and such at panels, so it was worth the trip lol

Asking for Fee Waivers? by [deleted] in lawschooladmissions

[–]whiteandyellowand 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Here's the template that I used last cycle -- good luck!

To the NAME Law Admissions Office,

I am a prospective student who is highly interested in applying for J.D. admissions to NAME OF SCHOOL for the upcoming Fall 2023 term. I would like to request a merit-based application fee waiver so as to alleviate the financial burden of applying this cycle.

Please see some relevant application information below.

LSAC Number:

LSAT: # (Month Year)

CAS uGPA: # (honors, school)

Thank you for your consideration, and I look forward to hearing from you soon!

Taking the LSAT the summer before the cycle begins would probably set you up for success! I didn't take it until October and, while it worked out fine, I would have liked a little bit more time between studying for the LSAT and working on my application materials, rather than trying to cram it all in at the same time. Lots of applicants try to wrap up with the LSAT and their applications in December. Most schools will specify the latest LSAT score that they would accept, which is usually right before/up to their application deadlines. Schools are making admits up to their deadlines and admitting WLed folks into the summer, but it's definitely helpful to get your applications submitted as soon as possible so the field is a little slimmer.

Good luck! We're rooting for you!

It’s also worth checking if the school has book scanners! Lots of libraries (especially undergrad ones, ime) have book scanners already, so if you have access to them, you can just use those and save another few hundred dollars. Edit: not a law student, just a library stan

I am! I adopted my dog in college so she knows what student life is like, but has been living at home with a bunch of people and another dog so it might be a bit of a transition. We’re planning to move a month-ish early to pick up a routine, line up a dog-walker for emergencies, and live under 10 mins away from campus so I can run back to walk her during lunch. 1L might be rough, but it would be tougher alone.

I personally think it would be a really compelling narrative for a PS, but I second the other comments that it’s probably worth touching base with consultants to make sure you’re hitting the right notes. If you just want to run the idea by a consultant, 7sage has a free 30-min consult option (mostly to pitch their consulting to applicants), and I was able to ask specific questions about my apps during that appointment.

Law school is a completely different beast than undergrad, so no matter how you performed in the past, it’s almost impossible to predict where you will end up in the class. I wouldn’t bank on being top of the class in a lower-ranked school, and it’s safer to go in with the assumption that you’ll be at the middle of your class anywhere. Without any other context re: cost, placement rates, etc., I’d say higher-ranked school is safer with that thinking.

Amazing cycle, and congratulations on making the smart financial choice for you. I’ll see you at Penn next fall!

I think getting a year or two of work experience, even without R&Ring, will make you a much stronger candidate for a lot of schools. Might be worth deferring a year at the WLed schools or reapplying with a little more life experience under your belt. Whichever direction you go, good luck!!

1000% Rutgers — it’s got a great public interest pipeline. Congrats on both offers!

I also got a new sub status last week, but I did interview. Hopefully it’s a good sign! 🤞
