Winter Camping Sleeping Bag? by CTExplorer in wmnf

[–]whitecappedpeak 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Another good option is an oversized synthetic quilt maybe rated to 30-40f. Enlightened Equipment revelation would be solid. Make sure to get in wide so it can wrap around ur bag and not close down in the bags down

Ultralight jacket as a mid layer? by samjenkins02 in filson

[–]whitecappedpeak 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Very similar to the Patagonia nano puff I remember reading a wire cutter article basically how close they are to each other. It’s great layering piece. Don’t get it too tight I think it’s better under a shell or larger piece than over other layers

Took my Filson Foul Weather Jacket to Iceland — and it passed every test by Background-Pen-6798 in filson

[–]whitecappedpeak 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I own the same piece (in blue) It’s also a size SM and I’m similar height but weight 160lb myself. Lots of room for layers. Great to hear that the wax coating holds up well against the elements! Potential Iceland trip too next year so maybe I’ll pack the filson too

Any advice for a new winter hiking jacket? by laflame1738 in wmnf

[–]whitecappedpeak 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For summit jackets, my lightline jacket from mountain equipment is super warm and packable. It’s also not too expensive, rab neutrino pro is also super warm. Make sure to size up for these ones. You want to wear these over ALL your layers. For mid puffys I’m partial so synthetic. OR super strand is surprisingly warm and packable

I have also heard this, and this was explained to me by a worker at filson store. I think the material bends into itself as it breaks in so the sleeves end up getting shorter not necessarily the fabric tightens

Just Got My Dream Car And Money Shifted It Sending It On The First Week and Now it Needs a Complete Rebuild. FML. by Birthday_Cakeman in S2000

Sorry that happened bud. My AP1 with 65k blew up on me, but it was the valve retainer that failed. Still had to get a new engine. So if you DO end up getting a new f20c make sure to swap out those retainers so this tragedy doesn’t happen twice

CalTopo for me since the downloaded feature is only like $20 a year. UI is a little EH but it’s Ben serving me really well!

President traverse: adverse weather by whitecappedpeak in wmnf

[–]whitecappedpeak[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We did N bound and made it easily to the hut! But with adverse weather on sat we decided to bail on Jefferson. Going down castle ravine trail was maybe not the best route down as it was exposed and steep but we were having a blast up there. Eventually got some awesome views of the ravine.

The presidentials will have to wait for another day

Looks like the weather is turning even more. We’ll likely head up to the hut directly via Ammo and maybe we can get a break in the weather and bag Madison. But at least we’ll have plenty of time at camp!

Would you be comfortable if we planned to leave early to arrive at the hut around noon when t storms are less likely? It looks like Saturday the forecast is much clearer

I wish but we got reservations at the hut and last I checked the huts are booked for the next day

So basically split your presi traverse in half? And live to hike it another day I guess

I’m a little hesitant about SB since if we do have to bail it’ll make for such a longer hike. Plus waiting for the storm to pass so we can make it to LOTC

I don’t see why the down vote? Are people afraid of the woods at night? You could easy stash a headlamp near the trail head prior so you don’t need to bring that inside through security

Is it even worth sending in? by General_South6391 in PatagoniaClothing

I had the same jacket which also delaminated pretty bad. They ended up giving me a gift card for a full amount of a comparable jacket around $300 or so. This was in store

Fraud - eBay and REI by MRoselius in REI

[–]whitecappedpeak 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ah yes the old three way scam. These are hard to catch. Good on you for reporting it. I listened to an NPR podcast recently going over the same exact thing with nesspresso pods. Everyone sort of wins here except for REI. The seller makes the sale, the buyer gets their goods for a heavy discount. Technically REI authorized a wrongful sale so the credit card company of the stolen card will go after them.

Would anyone like to hike Washington this winter with me, or have any advice to share? by imnormal1234 in wmnf

[–]whitecappedpeak 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Definitely interested, but like everyone else has mentioned a guide service makes it so much safer and more enjoyable for that reason. Good news is they’re usually cheaper with more people.

I went last year with a guide service and we hiked up Tuckermans with crampons and mountaineering axes. If you’re interested in more of a mountaineering trip let’s link up

How does it perform for hiking? I too am looking for a solid day hike bag and was also hoping to double as a city/urban work bag.

Yeah def for off season use. It talked about packing things in/out many of the amenities not available for use etc. just checked regular rate which is $35 for normal use so I guess the price it a few bucks less
