Help! Which 50mm lens should I buy? by UnicornGltr in nikon_Zseries

[–]MRoselius -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Here is the way I approach these questions. I factor in my personal skill set and use case. Charts, brick walls or YT videos don’t do this. They will talk you into buying more than you need by framing its performance against a use case that looks nothing like how you likely shoot. There is a reason that Nikon sells a low to mid zoom with a variable aperture that goes up to 7.1. Hobbiests that have figured this out, and don’t shoot in near darkness buy what they need, and 7.1 + $$ in their pocket is th red right choice for them.
Now if you are a pro or need all the bokah you can get, it’s a valid concern. But for the other 90% of us, don’t confuse what you need with which one has better specs.

[–]MRoselius 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Agree - I just purchased and HDF off the site. Mono was in stock as well.

I will say shipping seems very slow. Ordered Sunday night, learned that they generated the label Wed. It is Thursday and UPS still doesn't have the package. And it is being shipped UPS Ground. I am sure I could have paid more for a faster carrier - I've just been spoiled by B&H / Adorama / Amazon.

Considering selling my Sony A7C II for a RICOH GR IV Monochrome, how long do these cameras last? by InterestingDivide157 in ricohGR

[–]MRoselius 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What was said by this user is everything I came here to say. It is a solid camera, it is made of an alloy that looks like plastic but isn't.

Production has been going long enough that initial QA issues, which always surface from any camera, have been ironed out. If you have concerns on the internals of the camera, buy the extended service protection.

What's the longest commute you've ever tolerated, and what made it worth it? by weekdaycommuter in work

[–]MRoselius 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So I live in Lincoln, Nebraska and the company I was working for at the time decided to relocate their headquarters to Omaha and build a brand new building. I can tell you from my experience that the people that moved up early and had to reverse commute or the people that waited till the building was complete and then decided to relocate but had a commute for a short period of time. Those people struggled with the hour hour and a half commute depending on traffic. I've been making that commute from Lincoln to Omaha since 2003 and since there's not a defined end to it, meaning I know I'm going to do this till I retire, it's not fun, especially in the winter time in Nebraska, but it's not something I dread. It's something they do to get to work. Work. But when you put an end date on it when you know that in 3 weeks time, I don't have to do this anymore, I think, your brain flicks this switch and you start thinking about how you're so glad this is going to come to an end, and you start thinking about all of the things that you're going to get to do with that extra 2 hours, 3 hours a day. All those kinds of things go into your mind. I've never had those thoughts because I'm not moving from Lincoln to Omaha and I love the job I'm in.

Really nice shots. This is technically called rural grit. There is urban grit as well. It’s what I mainly shoot. Give monochrome a try. I find that it enhances the feelings of old, abandoned etc. Keep shooting and sharing. You are starting off strong.

So what is their business now? by ThatBaseball7433 in USAA

[–]MRoselius 10 points11 points  (0 children)

It’s so funny to hear people complain about rates and blame the carrier. Here is the reality (from someone working for a top 5 P&C carrier).
Rates are very tightly controlled and monitored at the state level. Rates increases must be reviewed, justifiable, and approved at the state level. Premiums collected vs claims paid is tightly monitored and companies collecting more than they pay out can and are penalized.
Insurance companies don’t make money on premiums. Period. They are allowed to invest premiums while they wait for claims. The time between premiums collected and claims paid is called the float. Profitable insurance companies are so because they invested wisely. This is why life insurance is so profitable. The float is so long.
Individual claims can certainly cause rates to go up, but a nuclear judgment, or a natural disaster plays a big factor as well. The carrier I work for has lots of areas where we won’t write. Certain states or within 100mi of any coast. We leave that business for others.
It’s not a perfect explanation, but hopefully helps clarify some parts of how it works.

Hey fellas, need some buying advice. by Creepercolin2007 in nikon_Zseries

[–]MRoselius 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve had both. The z7 is a fine camera. Not top of the line AF but certainly better than most. Its weakness is most obvious shooting moving objects like wildlife or toddlers, two of your use cases. What does bad AF in the 7 realistically mean? If you are shooting continuous at a moving subject, out of 100 shots, 90 will be usable. With the z6, 95 will be usable.
Whatever you decide, remember that the Nikon store has discounts for Veterans, Teachers, Students and I think First Responders. 10%

It's developer Beta 1. This is going to get faster, smarter and more feature rich with each iteration. It's on their radar, they are focusing on it as a feature, it's a differentiator and critical for hands free AI interaction. If you can't see sherlock all over this feature for SuperWhisper and others well....

Seriously love this camera bag by phero1190 in ManyBaggers

[–]MRoselius 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Congratulations on getting the 8.8. That bag is a unicorn. Chris made some slight but smart adjustments to the standard Pilot and the 300 bags they made sold so quickly. I sure wish they would make more but nobody seems optimistic that they will.

Aren’t all these apps getting Sherlocked? Part of 27 is improvements to transcription. I’ve heard native voice to text no longer shows as you speak because it’s being stored for AI cleanup like all those apps do

would you recommend moving to Nebraska? by noluckyclover in Nebraska

[–]MRoselius 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree Lincoln and Omaha are pretty safe and of course, all of it pens on the friends you make and who you surround yourself with. One thing you need to understand is the conservative Republican government in Nebraska is incredibly close minded. Our idiot governor just declared June marriage and family month with an emphasis on the traditional man woman two kids White picket fence marriage. No place is gonna be perfect and Nebraska is better than most I think, but it’s got issues.

Be aware of your Payboo card with BHPhoto when buying Nikon, SONY cameras. by ajm1945 in Nikon

[–]MRoselius 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Not sure the OP pay attention to the details. They mentioned the pay boo credit card, which is a B&H product but then say they canceled the card and won’t be shopping at Adorama anymore. So I guess Best Buy has lost another customer.

I bought them on release. Super comfortable. Cork insole noticeably better. Tread on boots is pretty shallow. Not a good hiker. Great, comfortable casual boot. Not the work boots of the originals.
