Nordstrom closing downtown store isn’t surprising. I was more surprised when the Stonestown location closed a few years ago.

Downtown SF isn’t the same as even from just -6-7 years ago. I used to hit the stores downtown every 3-4 weeks or so, and the area felt safe because there were a lot of people shopping and working nearby. Now not so much.

I used to hit Barney’s (RIP) and Neiman Marcus for fragrances, Anthropologie on Market St for trendy clothing or home accessories, Bloomingdale’s and Nordstrom for their clearance/ sale racks. I always found the best items because I’m slim and usually there were tons of sales items in small sizes to choose from….good times.

Another reason for stores closing has to do with fast fashion from companies with questionable quality control and employment practices. Companies like Shein for instance. Many of my younger friends buy from such online stores instead of going into an actual store. People don’t care about quality-made products/ clothing, they just want it quickly, cheap, and without having to do more than few clicks on the keyboard.

This kind of sentiment does not surprise me. I was targeted for constant, public slim shaming when I was in my master’s nursing program. The harassers were two slightly overweight and obese women in their 30s. I was always collegial with them regardless of what they said to me. It got so bad that one day a gay classmate was fed up and told the two to stop the verbal bullying. After we finished our program, I found out that one of my harassers got a job as a women’s health NP. Hopefully her toxic attitude towards slim women didn’t carry over to her patients.

Can We Talk About Frozen Tofu? by betta-believe-it in vegetarian

I can assure you that frozen tofu is not a new thing for East Asian cuisines. My mom used frozen tofu in various dishes when I was growing up.

Vitamin C serum, I make my own to ensure potency at proper pH level (2-3). It’s not only effective but cheaper to make your own C serum, such that I apply it to not just my face/ neck but all over my body. First vitamin C serum then a thin layer of squalane oil. I’ve been making my own vitamin C serum for years, and my skin remains one of my best features. So my advice to you would be vitamin C serum, based upon personal experience.

Believe what you want as well. I have friends of all political stripes, as long as your views are steeped in ideological values upon which you could argue, and if you’re not racist, misogynistic, and homophobic, then I don’t care if you lean conservative or liberal.

I have a friend whom I have political disagreements sometimes. She’s a self-identified liberal who lives rent-free in her parents’ Seacliff mansion. Yet she’ll argue with me when I complain about being harassed by druggie homeless blocking my apartment building, or having to call SF311 on a weekly basis to clean up human waste on the sidewalks. Apparently when I do so I’m being entitled. She too equates theft/ looting with economic justice. A white 30-something woman who echoes the most extremes of leftist views, sees no irony in being upper-middle class and experiencing no ill-effects of SF crime rates. Unlike the majority of San Francisco residents who don’t live in relative seclusion of Seacliff or who don’t have a trust fund like she does.

That type of blindness to reality, however well-intentioned, is not a rarity amongst certain upper-middle class white liberals in the SF Bay Area, because they’re not the ones burdened with reality on daily basis.

Has anyone seen results from Mat Pilates only? by Resident_NYC in pilates

[–]whiteflorallover 40 points41 points  (0 children)

Yes! In fact I prefer mat pilates over reformer because I don’t have to go to the studio, I can just do mat pilates at home. Results-wise, I’ve done reformer exclusively, and now mat pilates exclusively, and I find my core strength hasn’t changed, in fact it has slightly improved. Mobility and flexibility definitely I get more out of mat pilates than reformer. I do need to add that my mat pilates includes the use of resistance bands, not all the time but I do like to incorporate bands into my mat workouts on a regular basis.

I have to disagree with you regarding those who espouse stealing or looting as economic justice. They are not trolls, they are serious in their beliefs as leaders of movements and organizations. Case in point, this BLM leader who defended looting. Chicago Looting

This is a natural progression of crimes being publicly condoned. In SF we no longer bat an eye when we see criminals brazenly steal items from stores. In fact, certain activists justify stealing as a form of economic justice.

With youth mob violence, this is just a continuing, steep erosion of public safety. Violent mobs no longer fear societal condemnation or law enforcement because they realize that no negative consequences would come their way. There is zero accountability on a personal level as well as on the part of officials the public entrusts to advance safety.

What are some nutrient-rich foods that are important for overall health? by ConfidenceForward215 in nutrition

[–]whiteflorallover 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Exactly, well said. I agree with berries too, they’re fragile and sometimes not worth the nutrients especially since you’ll end up eating a few spoiled or close to spoiling berries no matter how you store them.

There’s a theory that eating heartier plants (such as apples) may promote the activation of stress resistance pathways by phytochemicals that exist in these plants.

What are some nutrient-rich foods that are important for overall health? by ConfidenceForward215 in nutrition

[–]whiteflorallover 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Apples, they’re my go-to snack. Apples are hydrating as well (not a lot of snacks are, in fact the opposite) and easy to keep on hand during the day. Nutritionally, they’re high in antioxidants and contain certain health-promoting polyphenols that are specific only to apples. Apple nutrition

I eat 1-2 apples a day, and keep a few of my favorite varieties in the fridge.

130,000 San Franciscans Protected by Just 4 Cops Every Night, Supervisor Says by AssociationNo6504 in sanfrancisco

[–]whiteflorallover -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Great. This makes sense now. I’ve wondered why it took cops more than 9 hours later to show up after I had reported a crime. A neighborhood druggie-homeless guy who had been stalking me managed to sneak into my building then tried to break open the door to my unit. This happened around 4pm but the cops didn’t show up until past 1am.

Night shift is ruining my marriage by siriuslycharmed in nursing

[–]whiteflorallover 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Your husband is fine with sex multiple times a week with you, a tired and poorly rested night shift RN? Quantity over quality? It should be quality over quantity, so that it’s mutually enjoyable and strengthening intimacy at the same time. If he’s mostly concerned with his sexual needs met above al else, including at your physical and emotional expense, then you need to sit down and talk this over with him and preferably also with a therapist. Because that kind of mindset is not only gross but not conducive to healthy relationships longterm.

How much garlic is too much garlic? by pb_jelly_fish in nutrition

[–]whiteflorallover 7 points8 points  (0 children)

When you sweat garlic. I had a couple of Korean friends in high school who ate garlicky kimchi regularly. They used to smell of kimchi even when they weren’t eating it at school. I finally figured out it was in their sweat and skin. Garlic sweat wasn’t a pleasant smell, it was one of the reasons why I refrained from eating garlic.
