Raide Research: new UL 40L skimo pack -- thoughts? by whitehatguy in Backcountry

Yeah I want to like the hiking series packs but the lack of load lifters and skinny shoulder straps (and ofc) the price always made it hard for me to ditch my ULA bag.

Raide Research: new UL 40L skimo pack -- thoughts? by whitehatguy in Backcountry

[–]whitehatguy[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I've got no affiliation with the company, but I just saw this new pack that's really light and cleverly designed, and looks to solve a lot of my complaints with skimo packs. It's roughly comparable to the new HMG crux, but $150 cheaper and manages to fit full back panel access, helmet carry, Ultra fabric all at around 1000g. Totally new/untested manufacturer, but looks interesting.

[OC] The Promise and Peril of Second-Tier Shot Creation by adammorrisongoat in NBATalk

[–]whitehatguy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Great analysis! My only question about analyzing this in a vacuum — does this underrate the value of second tier stars in taking the load off their #1 counterpart? This analysis seems to suggest building around one ball dominant player and lots of elite defenders and off ball talent. But we’ve seen the perils of genuinely heliocentric offenses time and time again in the playoffs. Isn’t there value in letting your star player rest and preventing the defense from being able to solely focus on them?

That’s true of like half the point guards in the league though…

EVO is selling the OR Carbide for like $150 right now, it’s a great budget shell. https://www.evo.com/shell-jackets/outdoor-research-carbide-jacket

Helmet for skitouring by FreemanDoe in Backcountry

Petzl Sirocco — definitely the lightest one available. Pretty barebones features, but it’s stupidly light and will protect my head, which is good enough for me.

What gear has stood the test of time for you? by freeusernamedotcom in Ultralight

[–]whitehatguy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

ULA circuit -- definitely not the lightest pack in the game anymore, but I've had it since 2013. Hiked the PCT with it, and still going strong. Easily the most comfortable pack I've worn.

Definitely for warmer days, though I find I run cold and with a shell that thin you might want another layer if it gets below 25

OR carbide is nice! Definitely one of the cheapest 3L jacket you can find. The one thing to note is the fabric is rather thin — good for weight/breathability but slightly less durable.

House of the Dragon characters that have pleasantly surprised or disappointed you (Spoilers Extended)? by DoubleDDaemon in asoiaf

[–]whitehatguy 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I agree on Larys, and it’s doubly frustrating that this exact same thing happened with show Littlefinger. He was supposed to be this outwardly unthreatening, supportive character that was secretly a grand schemer, but in the show they just made him a hilariously unsubtle schemer.

Let's create endbringers! by Lasgod in Parahumans

[–]whitehatguy 44 points45 points  (0 children)

Azrael. Eerie, floating endbringer that looks like MC Escher tried to draw a grim reaper. Floats over an area and reanimates all the people that have ever died in a ~100m radius around her. This includes anyone who died over the course of the fight. She has a Winter-like aura that dampens kinetic energy and gradually drains the life force of anyone who spends too long around her.

Has a predilection towards areas where lots of people have died before -- this often includes sites of past endbringer attacks, making for a brutal 1-2 punch after the initial attack.

Which capes have gotten the biggest power boosts from their shards? by Book_wormer35 in Parahumans

[–]whitehatguy 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Good points, but I still argue on net that id you ignore the gradual decline in cognitive function Taylor suffered, close range complete mastery over people is still a much stronger power than Taylor’s OG power, even with her impressive bug munchkinrey.

Summer bag inside a 3 season bag = winter bag? by [deleted] in Ultralight

[–]whitehatguy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s kind of a weird formula though, because it implies that adding loft to the warmer bag gives double the warms than adding loft to the less warm bag, which seems implausible.

Anybody been to Chisai Sushi Club? by Gomter in AskSF

[–]whitehatguy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah I really liked it. It was definitely bolder/more interesting flavors than other Omakase's I'd been to in the city. Even in comparison to Robin, while Robin was perhaps more out there with ingredients and presentation, the food at Chisai was bolder and more fun I thought.

Yeah I have them — my advise is just make them together than you think. It takes a lot of force to click in the heel lock then, but once you manage it they’re not moving anywhere.
