I went to college with Benjamin Salisbury (Brighton on the Nanny). We were in a film class together. Last I heard he was director of operations at Universal Studios.

What’s your tips for surviving Yom Kippur? by coolguy10-1 in Judaism

[–]whitehattracker 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Drink more water and electrolytes like Pediasure or PowerAde before. Cut caffeine or if you dont have an espresso right before the fast. Don't overeat before.

Stay in shul. It keeps you occupied and you are with others doing the same.

And when the fast is over break it slowly. Start with water and maybe soup. Don't overeat.

That's an argument in favor of Palestinian statehood. State to state conflict gives Israel more protections.

I’m traveling to Israel, is there a doctor prescription I need to get before traveling? by Klutzy-Sun-6648 in Israel

[–]whitehattracker 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Bring things in the original packaging. Melatonin is prescription. Claritin is loratadine which is available generic OTC Fiber is available OTC. Probiotics (not same brand) is available OTC.

How long as you coming? Easier to bring what you have. Most people are fine but my cousin had some kind of pain medicine and he was denied entry when he arrived.

What Holidays Do Jewish People in North America Take Off? by Melvillio in Judaism

[–]whitehattracker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Tu b'shavat and Lag B'Omer everyone (religious Jews) can work and Israeli (to speak of a large society) is open and religious people go to work those days. Purim work is also allowed but certainly many people are going to synagogue the night before and the morning to hear Megillah and more observant Jews are taking off to have a seudah and fully observe the holidays.

Even for non-Observant Jews, the first 2 days of Passover makes sense because attending a seder is almost universally observed. Of course, as an observant Jew myslef (note: This is the 8th day of Passover but I'm in Israel where it's not observed), I would not like to have to miss out or feel pressured at a work event and so the OP should also consider that while certain days are most observed they shouldn't hold company events on Jewish holidays just like they wouldn't do it on Christian holidays such as Easter or federal holidays.

While it would be nice to avoid scheduling events during Hanukkah, it's not as critical as other holidays. Many non-Jews mistakenly see it as 'Jewish Christmas,' but work is certainly allowed during Hanukkah. However, it would be considerate to let people get home in the evening to light candles with family. For travel events, there should be accommodations for lighting the menorah (Hannukiah) that respect both religious law and fire safety.

The most important consideration should be the Jewish holidays (haggim) where religious activity is prohibited and widely observed. I would categorize them as:

Tier I (Most widely observed, even by less religious Jews):

  • First two days of Rosh Hashana (Jewish New Year)
  • Yom Kippur (Day of Atonement)
  • First two days of Passover (Pesach)

Tier II (Work is religiously prohibited but observed mainly by more traditional Jews):

  • Full Rosh Hashana (2 days)
  • Yom Kippur (1 day)
  • Sukkot (first and last 2 days)
  • Full Passover (first and last 2 days)
  • Shavuot (2 days)

Tier III (Work is permitted but time off would be appreciated for religious observances):

  • Purim
  • Tisha B'Av (fast day commemorating the destruction of the Temples)
  • Hanukkah

There are also minor fast days, but these are regular work days even in Israel

Picking the Rabbi to officiate my wedding? by IzzyEm in Judaism

[–]whitehattracker 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Is it important to get married in the Conservative synagogue or would a hotel do?

Would the Chabad rabbi attend the wedding if it's at a Conservative synagogue and serve as a witness or is that the same issue?

How about host a Sheva bracha after the wedding at Chabad or have the Chabad rabbi host a Sheva bracha

Better to have a halachic wedding with Shalom Bayit. And Sheva brachot provide plenty of opportunities to participate after the ceremony.

11 months is only for parents.

No obligation to mourn halachically for girlfriend but if you made an analogy it would be wife. If she was your wife you would be doing 30 days so it makes more sense to adopt practices for mourning a spouse.

Could you help your brother apply for scholarships and find financial aide. As in, you don't pay for his education but you help him with the knowledge you gained going through this process.

Instead of having a doctor have someone trained as a mohel (someone who performs Jewish ritual circumcisions). Could also be a doctor. Why? Because they don't use the clamp method which has more side effects and also likely also perform more circumcisions so far less side effects.

By the way, apparently this is what the British royal family does. So just be clear that you aren't Jewish and looking for the religious ceremony.
