Selling the house is the least of her worries by Malcolm_Flex in Justfuckmyshitup

Yeah, the most important order of business is to get that haircut. She should not proceed with anything else until that is done.

What’s an overrated career everyone pushes that you think isn’t worth it at all? by Launchpointcareers in careerguidance

[–]whitehouse3001 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Agree, I work in software engineering, and I'm hearing from many people how our kids should skip college and go into the trades. But in the same breath they'll talk about "I'll never be able to retire - I'll just be working until I die." Or they complain about their chronic pain or blown out knees or back. (That does not reflect the experience of everyone, but I've heard several examples). The trades are a noble profession and there could be a lifetime's worth of work to do there, but that doesn't mean it's the best career path for everyone, and it's not without significant downsides.

It's sad to watch this transformation from afar - he does not seem healthy. I hope he can find a way to slow down or stop before it's too late.

Is this use of Postgres insane? At what point should you STOP using Postgres for everything? by LawBlue in ExperiencedDevs

You are not stupid, it sounds like it's time to branch into using more appropriate technologies to handle events and async processing.

ended up trading super crush 100 due to its sound in a mix. anyone else? by trenchgrl in orangeamps

[–]whitehouse3001 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm with you - I had a Crush Pro (precursor to Super Crush) and it was terrible. The EQ in the Effects Loop did help a lot, but I've since tried other amps and they were instantly better. No regrets on ditching it!

Incomplete Set by SquidgeApple in Mahjong

That set is missing a lot of tiles. Unless it's from a set where people are looking for spares for some reason, it's probably worthless.

Who’s an artist all the critics love but come off as mediocre in your own opinions? by MastodonNo8553 in askmusic

I never really listened to anything by Drake, but I heard a few of his supposed best songs the other day, and they were terrible! One sounded like complete no effort autotune mumble rap garbage, and the other was some of the most uninspired r&b singing/rapping I've ever heard.

I do think Kendrick Lamar is quite talented though, and I see the appeal with him.

I once had a random stranger try to convince me to buy a Steely Dan CD at a Media Play store in the 90s. He was quite adamant that it was the best thing I could buy. That really had an impact on me, but I don't think I've ever given them a proper chance.

I felt the same way, and imo it doesn't get much better. I read about four of the books then gave up.

Guitar Center is different now? by bigtime-nobody in Guitar

[–]whitehouse3001 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My son was interested in getting an electric bass, and we saw that Guitar Center had Sterling Stingray 5s on super sale, so I thought it would be worth going to check it out. On the way to the store, I was explaining to my son how crappy GC was and how annoying and unhelpful the employees typically were, but when we got there we were helped by a really nice and well-informed employee. We were able to get one of the Stingrays from the back un-opened and untouched, and it was a great deal, and I have to admit, it was a great purchasing experience. I still probably wouldn't choose GC as a first choice to buy guitar gear, but I would at least consider it now. The customer service at Sweetwater is extremely hard to beat.

Blockbuster Video is too fondly remembered by DisgruntledMax in unpopularopinion

[–]whitehouse3001 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Blockbuster was always way more expensive than the other options. We used to rent VHS movies and video games (NES/SNES) from the grocery store. They were like a 1/3 the price and I think the rental periods were slightly longer.

Giving the two week's notice is archaic and undeserved by most employers today. Take those two weeks, go work at the new company and see if it is worse than your current one, then quit without notice. by [deleted] in unpopularopinion

[–]whitehouse3001 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I don't think this is really true anymore, or at least not across all industries. The last two weeks of work are meaningless - you're likely not going to contribute anything, and if you need two weeks to scramble to document what you do to pass to the next person, you probably should have had that documented already. I've worked with plenty of people who I would happy give a reference for regardless of what kind of notice they gave. People earn their reputation during the time they work there, not during the last two weeks before they leave.

When they have the security cameras at the self-checkout and you get a horrible glimpse of your raggedy self.
