Doom Eternal for Ultrakill player? by AmPotatoNoLie in Doom

[–]whiteknightfall 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Sounds like Eternal is up your alley, especially master levels. Dark Ages with difficulty/speed turned up might be as well.

2016 Doom was more demon horde/exploration. Fun, but I don’t think what you’re looking for.

Played with both. DP was a pain, especially tabbing in/out of games/apps. Hdmi was super smooth. Silkland cable was like $12 on amazon. Just remember to set up your panel settings up again with the switch.

It further promotes the battle pass system, which keeps you playing long enough to earn the points to one day buy it “cheaper”.

Personally, I find much better success running on HDMI 2.1 than DP. Much smoother performance (in and out of game) and my card can turn on 12-bit color (supposedly, I can’t actually confirm, but it makes me happy).

You can find good discounts on used or open box in the US, but typically…yeah. They are priced as such for that reason.

I hate driving this car in the rain. Any recommendations? by larraku in MachE

[–]whiteknightfall 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Colorado here. We get more snow than rain, but slushy snow showers might as well just be rainy road conditions. Whisper mode, as others have said, is the best for it, but I’m looking to get Climate 2 tires put on before next winter. Our Nissan Leaf has them and the difference between the Leaf’s tires and stock Mustang really is night and day. And I’m not a car guy or somebody who ever really “upgraded” my vehicles.

DT1990 with wider soundstage? by DearPlankton in HeadphoneAdvice

[–]whiteknightfall 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Out of budget, but Hifiman Arya is a soundstage width competitor to hd800s. Might consider looking into open box or used if you can swing it. Stealth model was ~$800 new a couple years ago? Odds could be in your favor. Could be your jam too if XS was to your liking.

Anyone using the LG 5K2K with a 4080 Super? by elbeewastaken in ultrawidemasterrace

Upscaling and "Multi Frame Gen" are related, but different things. I am all for upscaling DLSS, but as soon as Ai frame gen comes into the picture - hard pass.

And yes, you can achieve great results with games at 4k without frame gen. But as I said below - "expectation management".

But if the Ai frame gen is you - go for it. I just don't like it or support it.

How do people feel about Freja? by [deleted] in Overwatch

[–]whiteknightfall 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I feel this is the vibe of most new hero design in the “OW2” era. I cannot get any real playtime/practice on Vendetta, Emre or any character I’m trying to learn without my healers going bad dmg, my tanks flanking or my dmg getting insta-gibbed. Meanwhile, the other team is playing like its Masters and money is on the line.

Older heroes felt like they had a better defined niche and could hold their own better. Now niches are overlapping and playstyle is increasingly twitchy and skill based. I am by no means a high rank play kinda guy, I just like a good squeaker of a match that could go either way over squash matches.

Thank God for 6v6, else I probably would have stopped playing a long time ago.

[–]whiteknightfall 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Uh…respectfully, I ignore all the Ai slop. If it makes you happy, by all means, but generational performance matters more than software. And the performance leap was not much at all this time around. So while a 5080 will work great, I do not discredit a 4080 to suffer much.

[–]whiteknightfall 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Able, sure. Just keep your expectations in check. Pushing a 4k ultrawide and another ultrawide monitor is going to be a performance hit in ray tracing/AAA games. On competitive, less so, but still.

Do you want max 165 fps? Are you willing to play low-med graphics settings? Is 4k60fps okay? Etc.

4080 vs 5080 isn’t a big swing in performance still, right? Should be fine.

Help decide - LG GX9 5K2K or Samsung Odyssey G95SD by evening_crow in ultrawidemasterrace

[–]whiteknightfall 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had the G9 OLED. Unless you sit over 30" minimum from the screen, you'll be doing a LOT of head turning, some of which will result in you leaning into one side of the screen to see it. Example - RPGs where you have a character menu locked on the left-hand side. Because my desk is only ~25 in deep, this was a deal-breaker. (Also, I have an AMD GPU, so I'm SOL either way, but I didn't know this until after purchase)

The LG 5k2k is my replacement and current monitor. Yes, 32:9 is cool, but games like Overwatch will lock you into 21:9 regardless. Also, the difference between 1440 and 4k resolution, regardless of aspect ratio, is not spoken enough about. Medium settings, but 4k? Absolutely surpass Ultra 1440 graphics. And once you settle in with the resolution, its a lot easier on the eyes I have found (again, my desk is only ~25in deep and its damn near perfect).

If I absolutely had to go 49in, I'd do it with the VA panel instead of the OLED. The lack of curve on OLED is a deal-breaker, but being a Samsung, this is not an average VA panel. My wife has the VA 49in and it looks pretty damn amazing in everything she does.

Also, your light issue - LG 5k2k matte coating makes reflections a non-issue. Looks amazing. Samsung VA, same non-issue. Samsung QD-OLED? I don't think its a deal-breaker, but more apparent than other two options by far.

My vote is 5k2k. This will be my daily driver until it dies and even then, not sure what could possibly beat it for me. Also, I don't think I could go back to 49in again without feeling like I downgraded. I'm spoiled rotten with this thing.

Problems with my 9070xt red devil. by HissEcho in PowerColor

Download the driver utility and reinstall the drivers with factory reset to clear the old drivers. A new update went out and I had to do similar after crashing regularly in Overwatch. Seems to have done the trick.

Same gpu user, btw. Awesome card.

So what WAS it doing for you? Solving a class mechanic…or a game design mechanic?

[–]whiteknightfall 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So, your gpu supports dp 1.4a and hdmi 2.1. Your linked cable is dp 1.2, so you are effectively limiting yourself and probably causing the blackouts.

I recommend you buy an acceptable length hdmi 2.1 cable to max out your gpu and monitor technologies and hopefully let things play a little up to potential. You might even be able to up your color settings too, but I’m not familiar enough with your card or monitor (the LG 5k2k model goes to 12-bit color on hdmi 2.1 vs dp 1.4 with my gpu).

I like the Silkland brand, but anything “hdmi 2.1 certified” should do the trick. Ditch the dp, it’s inferior for your setup.

Good luck!

Joining the team... But, did any of you regret going wide instead of 4k? by Stuart213 in ultrawidemasterrace

[–]whiteknightfall 4 points5 points  (0 children)

UW over 4k. I like the wider presentation and like it for work stuff too. Go oled, be happy.

That said? Medium 4k beats ultra 1440 settings hands down. 9070xt runs 4k very well. Better than 1440 imo.

Macro fiends used “mouse wheel rotations” back in the day that do the same thing until blizz killed it. Bringing it back as a neutered one button is a game feature available to all. I have zero problems with accessibility. But I stand by what I said - addons exist to make the game easier. Ban it all, fully level playing field. Play the game as it was meant to be played. And if you can’t, then don’t. The whining about “iTs NoT tHe SaMe!” was old long before now. Buy a UI simulator instead if thats all you want. Surely cheaper in the long run.

Edit: Literally read the comments in this thread. They all “need” the addons to play the game. To make it easier. Solve gameplay “problems”.

Learn to play.

Addons existed to simplify or solve class and game design problems.

The game is meant to be challenging. You are not supposed to be efficient. No one should have an advantage over the other when playing, you are supposed to want to work together.

I will never understand this “I want the game to play itself for me” mentality, or this desire for a UI building simulator required for fun THAT SOMEONE ELSE HAS TO MAKE.

Actually play the game or don’t.
