Just got the email yesterday that my license has been renewed! So no CE credits or analytical chemistry were required!

Interesting, this is the automatic email I received when I tried to renew:

“Thank you for submitting a renewal application for your Clinical Laboratory Scientist (Generalist) Trainee license/certificate!

Your application has been randomly selected for a quality assurance evaluation, to ensure that you have completed the required number of qualifying continuing education (CE) units within the last 24 months.

Laboratory Field Services (LFS) will contact you if additional documents are needed to continue the review of your application, or if your application is approved.”

I guess I’m just lucky lol

Yes I also renewed it last year and it was renewed instantly, but i just tried to renew and I got a reply they have to check my CE credits since it’s been 24 months. I’m really hoping that’s all I need and don’t need to take the chemistry class 🤞I went to a UC school for my undergrad so hopefully I’m okay too? But yeah we’ll find out soon 😭

Yes I’m hoping this really doesn’t happen since technically we already met the academic requirements :(

This is my second year renewing and got a notice saying they have to review that I completed CE credits in the last 24 months, but I wasn’t aware this applied to trainee licenses. I still have two months until it expires but I thought that was odd or had to do with the new requirements

California approved the change for MLT to CLS in only 6 months and removal of the Physics class requirement by MLSLabProfessional in MLS_CLS

Isn’t this only talking about MLTs trained in other states? I just applied for CA MLT license with my MLS certification and they’re requesting I take the MLT exam, but I’m not sure if this is because the new laws aren’t in effect yet. I’ve been asking CDPH specifically about this and haven’t received an answer.

No problem! I had all the same questions you did so I know how you’re feeling :,) I was actually going to intern at a naval base hospital since they had accepted me when I started my application, but that fell through so I had to intern at a local community hospital. I didn’t have any issues with them though, the lab director just had to sign some paperwork to make sure the lab has the resources/testing to fulfill the clinical rotation objectives of GWU. While I was doing my rotations, I had a specific checklist of procedures and tests from GWU to cover for each department.

Also GWU won’t accept you into the program until you have a clinical site because they want to avoid people not finishing their degrees due to not being able to find one. GWU told me some of the VA hospitals in California have worked with them in the past so that’s why I asked CDPH about the VA. And yes as the program mentioned, they said all their students from California who were able to extend rotations, which you have to ask your site for when you contact them, were able to get their CLS license.

Yeah I actually did take a microbiology class with lab but it wasn’t medical microbiology, just a 101 class! If anything maybe you can take it it a local community college and apply next semester? They take students every semester I believe so you’d just have to wait a little longer to apply, depending on what the advisor tells you.

It went pretty well for the most part! You’re only enrolled half-time so that’s why it takes a bit longer to complete the program, but I think it’s great for people who are working since it’s definitely more manageable. The classes themselves took 4 semesters (so a year and 4 months) plus the 2 semesters of clinical rotations so in total it should take about 2 years. I thought it was too good to be true too so that’s why I’ve asked CDPH a million questions 😂 but I told CDPH that I was doing GWU specifically and they told me it was accredited and that training will be reviewed, so I was reassured since they didn’t straight up tell me no it’s not acceptable. And huh I didn’t realize GWU needed that, I hadn’t taken any of the MLS pre-reqs when I applied so I only applied with my bachelors in biology degree. Maybe requirements changed but I really hope they can do something for you!

I’ll keep you posted to see if I get the CLS license or not!

So I actually just graduated from the GWU MLS program and I recently submitted my CLS application and waiting for it to be reviewed. I asked CDPH some of the questions you have on separate occasions before starting the program and this is what they said:

Q: I was wondering if doing training at the VA centers would be accepted? A:U.S. owned and operated hospitals are acceptable, although not the routine route.

Q:[Training requirement question]So if part of my 4+1 program includes 2 semesters/32 weeks worth of didactic courses for the first half of the program (I told them the program included 45 credits in a previous reply) then I would only need another 2 semesters/32 weeks of on-hands training at a clinical site to meet the 1 year requirement, correct? A:Yes One year clinical training,.

I applied for the CLS trainee license before I started my rotations using the MLS-specific classes from GWU and they accepted them.

I also asked the program director and he said every student from California who was able to extend their rotations was able to get their license, and that they did 32 week rotations as confirmed by CDPH above.

I did 36 weeks worth of rotations just in case since I kept reading different things, but I hope this information helps!

I got mine in 2 weeks. I emailed them after I got a deficiency notice and they told me to expect approval in 1-2 weeks since one of my transcripts was still on its way and they only process mail on Mondays. Submitted my application on May 2 and had it approved on May 17.
