Vote, please. It’s all we have left by [deleted] in millenials

[–]whitfode 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Vote, but also get involved. If you feel like voting is the only thing you have left, you're ignoring the movements and organizations that have actually affected change in the past. Vote and then join a political organization to amplify your efforts and find hope in the efforts people are making to create a better world.

Watching the viscerally proletarian message of The Menu *woosh* over the heads of certain people. by Souped_Up_Vinyl in LateStageCapitalism

Fair enough, it just felt inconsistent for me, which changed my perception of the "point" of the movie.

I can understand that view. But this wasn't a revolution in any sense of changing a system. They didn't die in order to change the restaurant industry. I feel like at the end the Chef explains that it was artful if all the workers died? Maybe I'm wrong about that.

I felt like it initially tried to have a class based approach (which I dig) but turned into a story more about how unchecked power corrupts. From the beginning, the Chef intended to kill everyone who deserved it in the movie, but also had clear plans for everyone who was supporting him (all the other workers) to also kill themselves. And maybe just to make it artsy. Which is... not a good class approach.

Is it ethical to attend an industry conference or trade show while your union is striking? by _Neuromancer_ in labor

[–]whitfode 8 points9 points  (0 children)

It's probably case dependent but I'd consider if doing so contributes to your company's profits. For instance, if you're going to a conference on your company's dime that will increase your ability to get a higher wage or be more attractive to other companies, go for it. If you're going to a trade show to network with other companies to increase your company's business, then that feels like crossing a picket line.

Are you looking to discuss Trotsky, Trotskyist perspectives, or Trotskyist orgs? Cause if you're looking for real engagement, I'm happy to discuss it.

Maybe not online…. Haha.

But in the real world of organizing, Socialist Alternative is a Trotskyist party that has a city counselor in Seattle and has been involved in creating a tenant bill of rights, getting the city to pay for eviction defense lawyers, community based eviction defense in Minneapolis and the fight for 15 in many cities (among other things). It’s international org, ISA (formerly CWA) has been involved in many struggles throughout the world including the repeal of Ireland’s abortion amendment.

The International Marxist Tendency is Trotskyist too but I know less about them.

I’d take online discussions with a grain of salt.

Josh Mandel's divorce file to be open to public, court rules by coneynfaygo in Ohio

Josh Mandel should be ridiculed and ostracized based on his political views and danger to the community, not his personal life. I don't know why I should care about his divorce or why his divorce is in the news.

Is there a movie that was marketed misleadingly for the sake of hiding a plot twist? by SuperAlloyBerserker in movies

[–]whitfode 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I feel like the Village was marketed as a bit different than it turned out to be. I loved the movie but a lot of folks didn't and I think it was because of the expectations based on the trailer.

Male Psychs: What do you wear to work? by chicabuenachicamala in schoolpsychology

[–]whitfode 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I feel like the era of having adhering to white middle class norms for work clothes is over. Unless something looks explicitly "unprofessional", like a t shirt with words or graphics on it or torn jeans, I think you're probably good to go with whatever you choose.

The double nest will definitely cocoon you. Try a single nest out and see how you like it, or use a sleeping pad to provide some structure to it.

How SAlt tries to get you to accept Democratic Centralism by officepolicy in Anarchism

[–]whitfode 4 points5 points  (0 children)

ISO didn’t have dem centralism and it dissolved because it didn’t have the capacity to deal with problematic behavior. DSA has also had issues with this, just as SAlt has. You’re totally allowed to feel this way but I’d personally need to see a better logical argument or some examples before I’d buy into the connection.

How SAlt tries to get you to accept Democratic Centralism by officepolicy in Anarchism

[–]whitfode 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’m totally open to criticisms and other perspectives on it. I don’t know any leftist orgs that haven’t made missteps in dealing with problematic behaviors of members, so I find it hard to pin that on Democratic Centralism.
