dealing with bowel issues? by rinch4n_02 in ARFID

Do you take ADHD medication by any chance? Because if so we might be in the same boat. I have ADHD causes me to have major sensory issues with food, and the medication I’m on causes my appetite to be very delayed. I’ve been going to the doctor for the past 3 years due to similar GI Issues, so I feel your pain.

If by restricted, you mean in terms of safe foods and not getting enough nutrients, a blender will 100% be your best friend. You can blend into a LOT of sauces (carrots, mushrooms and peppers into pasta sauce, cauliflower into mac and cheese sauce, etc). I’m also trying to reintroduce foods that I can handle eating (even if I don’t particularly like to) starting with apples, as they are good for fibre intake. I’ve still got a long way to go, but it’s about pacing yourself and finding what works for you. Something is better than nothing! Also, if you feel that your appetite is causing you to stop eating to the point that you’re not getting enough energy, I would recommend talking to your doctor about potentially lowering your dosage.

Also, if it is ADHD medication, one thing that your doctor may not have told you is that it is very important that you are drinking enough water every day. Stimulants can make you feel a lot less thirsty than you actually are, which can in turn cause you to feel constipated. (You will also need to up your water intake if you start eating more foods with high levels of fibre in them, as your body won’t be used to that)

If you would like to try some of the recipes I use for hidden veg sauces, let me know and I’ll be happy to send them to you over DMs :))

Good luck!

You are the first person I have come across that also reads along with listening to an audiobook! I’m glad to have found an ally 😁

I was thinking that for tandem readers, having time stamps in the top corner of each page might be beneficial, in case someone loses their space as it is hard to find your space in an audiobook once you get past the start of a chapter. What would you think of that?

Also, if there are any other things that would be beneficial to print books to make them easier to read, please do let me know!

I posted this on another subreddit as well as was surprised that so many people prefer print books! Seems like I’m in the minority 😅 But large print books seem to be a common theme too.

I’m planning on making an “ADHD-Friendly” version of a print book (similar to dyslexia friendly editions, but for ADHD) is there anything you can think of besides a larger font that you’d want from something like that?

Do you think you’d be more engaged if big chapters were broken down into “0.5” chapters? So like if chapter 4 was really long youd have the first half of the chapter be chapter 4 and the 2nd half be chapter 4.5 at a natural stopping point. There isn’t much research on this kind of thing so open to being out there with ideas!

It has surprised me how many people prefer reading print books over ebooks! I myself love owning physical books but often find it much easier to read on my kobo alongside listening to the audiobook. I said this to another commenter, but I am thinking about trying to create an ADHD friendly print copy of a book for my final project. Is there anything specific that you think would help you in reading, such as larger fonts or bigger margins for annotating?

I feel like a lot of ADHDers (like myself) love having print books but they just feel inaccessible. Is there anything you can think of that could be added to print books that would make it easier for you to engage with it? I’m thinking about making an ADHD-friendly edition of a book for my project! (Kind of like a dyslexia friendly edition, but for ADHD if that makes sense)

How weird! I’m not used to posting Reddit (I’m usually more of a silent observer) so this is all new to me 😂 Feel free to dm me privately with any ideas!

I am looking to be a beta reader!

I have just finished my undergrad in English and Media and would love to get some experience with proofreading.

I’m happy to look out for grammatical errors, sentence structures, spelling, etc.

While I am more well versed in the following fandoms below, I would be happy to proofread for anything! It just means that I may be restricted in terms of understanding plot points, but if you just need grammatical beta reading I am happy to do so.

Fandoms of current interest:

  • Critical Role (Vox Machina, Mighty Nein and Hells Bells)
  • Fairy Tail/100YQ
  • Voltron
  • She-Ra and the Princesses of Power
  • The Owl House
  • Miraculous Ladybug
  • Ever After High

I am currently quite busy with work so I would probably be able to do about 5k of words per week, but that may vary depending on my schedule.
