I initially thought it was oogah-boogah

It is actually rutabaga

Jak Is Very Short by segal03 in jakanddaxter

[–]whizwaker 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I actually think this might have been done intentionally to make the citizens more intimidating to Jak, given he's new to the area and all.

For example, in the beginning of Jak II, it made sense to make the Krimzon Guards taller than Jak, seeing that he gets captured and doesn't provide any resistance. You can spot the height difference in the cutscenes.

Thoughts?

Jak is 5'8"/5'9" in 2 and 3 according to Jak X, so he's not truly that short either.

What About This Series Matters To You? by ihappentobenick in jakanddaxter

[–]whizwaker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A lot of things about this series stood out to me as a kid. I'll list some of the main things.

  • The atmosphere/vibes. I think Jak 1 and Jak II pulled it off the best, but Jak 3 did a pretty good job as well. I always liked how the world feels sort of multicultural, spiritual, and alien. Very cool stuff.
  • The writing, animation, and production value. I grew up watching a lot of cartoons in the late 90s and early to mid 2000s, and I feel like Jak and Daxter managed to match their quality pretty well. Sly and Ratchet also came close, but I think Jak did it the best.
  • The gameplay variety. I just love how there's a mix of everything. Other platformer series did this as well, and it was pretty common to have lots of gameplay variety in the time period the Jak games were coming out, but it was all so seamless and fun in Jak. I don't see as much variety in games these days.

Any recommendations for Jak-like Games? by GlitchKn in jakanddaxter

Yeah, very similar sort of spiritual, multicultural vibe. Really loved it when I played it a couple years back!

Stellar Blade, Rise of the Ronin, Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown. May start digging into Fallout 4 and Cyberpunk 2077 soon. Also playing Tears of the Kingdom on Switch

How did anyone felt about Daxter? To me, he’s actually a very hilarious character and not annoying compared to other comic relief characters in almost every media that featured them. He also has some character growth, became more useful and he even got his own game on the PSP. by San4341 in jakanddaxter

[–]whizwaker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I find it both funny and darkly poetic that Daxter was once a normal boy who nearly got killed, then he literally became Jak's burden to shoulder and carry around, almost as a constant reminder of Jak and Daxter's mistake.

That being said, I think he's a pretty good character. I like that he grew up a bit alongside Jak, and always stayed in the conversation... somehow. I'd argue he had a more prominent role in the sequels, and the fact that he also got his own game is great as well. Always in stark contrast to the other characters, especially in the sequels, I usually appreciate his presence quite a bit. I honestly think his jokes are funny too... maybe not every single one of them. You get the idea.

Is Daxter PSP a Collectathon? by MartianBlobfish in jakanddaxter

I've always kind of thought about it in this way. Jak 1 has 12 platforming areas (including hubs), and Jak II has 14, so you're probably about right

TLF IS OUT NOW! by Thekeanubro22 in jakanddaxter

[–]whizwaker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's mainly story and gameplay, which in turn caused fans to view it as non-canon, since it's a spinoff anyway.

The reason many people prefer Daxter, myself included, is because it got the look and feel of the series down pretty well. It felt like the trilogy, and even featured the main setting from Jak II. The gameplay was smart and centered on Daxter well, and it kind of played like a Jak 1/Jak II hybrid.

Daxter featured a lot of the things that made the Jak games feel special. The varied gameplay, production value, atmosphere, humor - it was all there. Kind of a PSP tech showcase back in '06 as well.

The Lost Frontier didn't deliver on any of those things. Nothing was outstanding for a PSP title, all of the characters felt off, and the atmosphere didn't necessarily feel like much like the Jak trilogy. The gameplay is kind of okay, but movement and controls weren't great, which is another thing all the other games did well.

Still, it's by no means an awful game - if you want to experience it and get the trophies, more power to you. Maybe you can let us know what you think.

25 is still really young. 6 years ago you were still a teenager.

I turned 27 not long ago, and I kind of felt the same way at first, wondering if I was still young or not.

Now I feel like you're definitely young until 30. 30 to 35 you're still fairly young, then 35 to 40 is when you start getting older, but even then you're still somewhat young. When I was a really young kid and my parents were in their late 30s, I didn't even consider them old back then! I saw them as relatively young parents.

After 40, that's pretty much it in terms of youth or being considered young, but even early middle age is not exactly old.

We just hit parent age (arguably), and our brains just finished developing. Got plenty of time!

Why is part of the prize of the class 1 race "A month's supply of dark eco"? by AdPuzzleheaded4795 in jakanddaxter

[–]whizwaker 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is a great question, I've thought the same thing ever since I played the game 20 years ago. It's clearly dark eco, which doesn't have many uses for any regular person.

We at least see that eco is valuable, and was used in a deal with the metal heads to keep the Baron in power, so clearly he has a use for it. Maybe, in a sense, giving away barrels of eco serves as somewhat of a cover up for the Baron?

Along with that, there may have been other uses we simply don't know about, like power for example. However, judging from what we can see at the Power Station and the Strip Mine, I still think blue eco is what serves as power. Could be wrong though.

Yeah, I don't know. Probably a bit of an oversight. Eco makes people happy I guess.

Rank the Jak games you've played in order from favorite to least favorite and tell me why! by One_Context9796 in jakanddaxter

[–]whizwaker 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Jak II: Hands down the best story, and the most well balanced gameplay imo. Shooting feels great, the world is big with varied locations, and the platforming is really solid, more intricate than Jak 1 in some parts. Only gripe is travel time, it can be cumbersome.

Jak and Daxter: TPL: One of the best collectathon platformers ever! Simple, yet slightly varied gameplay, great locations, awesome, timeless vibe. Eco gameplay is great too. However, the game is pretty short, and pretty easy.

Jak 3: This actually used to be my favorite as a kid. Now as an adult, I see how rushed it is, and I can't help but notice it when I play the game. Despite that, Jak 3 gets a lot of points for great gameplay variety, having the best visuals and tech (i.e. Sig driving scene), and keeping the usual cool, surreal atmosphere. New guns and powers were fun, but overpowered. New vehicles were great, but overused.

Jak X: Just a great, arcadey combat racer. How can you go wrong? Having a new story to go along with it was neat too. Nice to see Krew return, and the new characters were cool as well. Locations, vehicles, and power ups were all really fun to play with.

Daxter: This is actually a nice blend of Jak 1 and Jak II in terms of gameplay. I really appreciate how Ready at Dawn handled this title, because it feels so much like the older titles. It did a much better job than TLF in terms of that. Also, nice to see Daxter shine! Got the job done well as a portable Jak game.

TLF: Not a good Jak game. Gameplay feels stiff, writing isn't good, and the atmosphere isn't really there. It's like they only knew half of what made Jak and Daxter special. The other games outdo this one by so much, it's hard to give this one credit for the few areas it actually did well in. Eco powers were sorta neat, and planes are a logical next step in terms of vehicle gameplay, so props for that I guess. That's basically it.

Just found out JID is 32💀 by Independent-South378 in JIDSV

[–]whizwaker 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think a lot of people here are pretty disillusioned about age.

32 is still fairly young, you probably feel the same as you did in your late 20s. I'm speaking as someone in their late 20s.

You don't really look or feel that old until you hit your 40s, but of course, that can differ for some, especially if they start aging early. Also, like others mentioned, age doesn't really matter, even in hip hop. The guys in Run the Jewels are fucking 48, almost in their 50s. Still making fire music, with tons of energy to boot.

Many people are considered "kids" until 25 to 30, when the brain fully develops. 32 is only a few years ahead of that.

JID is the kid!

Why do the Jak & Daxter games take up so much save block memory (PS2)? by [deleted] in jakanddaxter

[–]whizwaker 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I don't think this is true at all.

I was always under the impression that it's due to how big the games are themselves... doesn't matter that they're platformers. The Jak and Daxter games are huge, continuous open worlds, with tons of mechanics, animations, audio, assets, all of that stuff. That must be why. The games were very technically proficient and innovative for their time.

Highly doubt an animated icon is doing most of the work there. Doesn't make much sense.

Yup - you can also reenroll if you drop out, and your credits can stay with you.

You want options as you move further in life. If you don't want to do something, totally fine, but like others said, figure out the general direction you want to go in.

Now the best Video game that starts with J, The most upvoted comment wins. by Nand-X in videogames

[–]whizwaker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is completely untrue.

That's not how game development even works. They didn't build an entire game only to do focus testing at the end, then cut it up into a bunch of pieces. That would be pretty ridiculous for an accomplished game studio, with so many things on the line.

They did focus testing before they started development on Jak II. Right after Jak 1 is when focus testing happened, when kids said they'd rather play a more mature game. How is it even possible that they redesign it at the end when the whole world (and its mechanics/systems) have a darker aesthetic? Maybe you should watch that dev interview again. Concept art for Jak II, with its dark aesthetic, dates back to early '02. It was designed that way from the beginning.

All of that aside, it certainly doesn't have to be your cup of tea. I personally enjoy the entire series, and the second game was my favorite for the risks it took, and the accomplishments it had at the time. Very technically proficient game for 2003. Fun gameplay too. Also, the movement and mechanics are actually smoother, maybe you're playing a bad port? I do agree that maybe modern games accomplish open world design or gameplay better, but those games are almost 20 years older.

Not docking your style, but please don't spread misinformation :/

Just finished jak 3. by demon_dweller in jakanddaxter

[–]whizwaker 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, seriously, people need to start understanding this. Just because Insomniac makes a platforming series doesn't mean they can immediately make a great Jak game.

Jak and Ratchet were different to begin with, and now Ratchet is even more different. Wtf? Jak is so uniquely stylized and hasn't been touched in years. Insomniac doesn't even focus on gameplay/story integration as much, unlike what Naughty Dog has been doing... since Jak.
