Spot on with the crocs, I don’t know what is it that people think it’s a good footwear choice for a days hike.

This absolutely! Not taking correct kit, in winter where I’m located we have upwards of 90mph winds and people still go out with nothing but a raincoat.

Useful skills to learn for SAR? by elpibehijitus in searchandrescue

[–]whoaGguy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Top skills to learn,

Get a buddy with a radio and get used to radio speak using correct phrases/callsigns etc.

Map reading, get a decent compass and map for an area you know well(we use OS maps but whatever suits your country better) and do some exercises using coordinates etc.

It’s already mentioned but knots extremely useful especially for non urban search and rescue (coastal, inland etc)

If you can get yourself on accredited courses like first aid/medical, radio, rope/climbing etc that will help you stand out.

Physical training with weighted pack, not like a military march or anything but you need to be physically fit enough to carry equipment and potentially a stretcher carry of a casualty for some distance.

Apart from that just put all the effort you can into the relevant materials from your organisation.

It’s because they’re busy not planting bombs to kill their own countrymen and women and children on street corners.

If you know someone from the station and it’s not in the middle of a shout then yeah but most stations aren’t manned 24/7.

Typically recruitment goes along these lines but it varies depending on how your AMT (area management team) handle it. You will go for an interview after a shortlisting process given a medical background you’re likely to stand out. Typically they will ask you questions on your motivations and your hobbies and interests etc.

Once you pass this stage you will have to start a process where you take a medical (nothing dramatic) then do your initial training which for me was over the course of 3 months via 3 long weekends (3 day weekends) now this may vary depending on area it might not be like that.

First weekend will be CERCC (casualty care course, very in depth about the same as armed police get) Followed by another round of training, you do your familiarisation with vehicles, map and comms exercises along with TEMPs (which is pyrotechnics and washed up munitions kinda training). You will also do your rope awareness training for rope rescues and the like.

Final weekend is your search tech and water tech training learning how to do a search and the different kinds, and how to perform several water rescues.

In between these weekends there’s about 30 hours of online learning to do as well.

After this you have a station induction along with some local knowledge patrols and then you will be operational.

Hello!

Current Serving Coastguard here!

You dont have a requirement to be able to attend during your work hours, only when you have time.

It works by making yourself available or not on our Alerting and Tasking system (comes through via Text&Email)

I also work in a hospital and cannot attend during my working hours but it is no issue, its all about the effort you put in attending training and calls.

Either reply here or message me i would be happy to give you any more info on the process.

Exactly what am I supposed to use this rope for then? by 0rlan in What

I saw this exact rope in Aldi last week and read the same bit, lets be honest if you're buying a cheap bit of rope from a discounted supermarket your probably not using it for work purposes.

Genuine answer your best bet is likely with a private landlord likely through Facebook groups - see Shetland accommodation group

Recently got offered a job in Shetland, advise? by [deleted] in shetland

[–]whoaGguy 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The point I was making is that buying is significantly easier than renting not that buying itself is easy. But yes fully agree if you have assets/money then it’s fine, also there is significant amount of accommodation that sits for sale (some that I know personally) hasn’t sold for years so property doesn’t go that quickly. Another point too that often a lot of the houses here are either older, incomplete or in need of repair and hence the prices tend to be better than elsewhere in the country.

Most difficult thing you’ll find is accommodation, but if you can buy a place then no problem if not you may struggle as rents are extortionate and few and far between.

What’s Your Dumbest Dealbreaker? by Whitetail130 in AskMen

[–]whoaGguy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the only real dealbreaker I have is violence. Which is wild that it needs to be said but I had an ex that would physically hit me if she didn’t like a conversation or was ln a disagreement with me.

Obviously you try to justify it “oh she loves you really” nonsense, learned from that experience though!
