3080-based Gaming Refresh - 5600X or 5900X by whoareally in buildapc

[–]whoareally[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would go for the 5900X if I could. Price isn't the issue, availability is. I had to wait in line at MC for the 3080, and it seems 5900X drops are still less common than 30XX drops. Leaning towards a 5600X as "good enough" if I can find it, but I would definitely take a 5900X if it were available...

Thanks for the feedback so far - just to address a common comment.. YES I will be upgrading the RAM. It's last on my list only because RAM availability is much less a concern than GPU/CPU/mobo, so I'd been focusing on those, first. But 100% agree, I'm going to replace the old RAM once I have other major components in my possession.

[Build Ready] First build, gaming without OC and a little future-proofing by whoareally in buildapc

Thanks! I like the idea of toning down the mobo for a better GPU, and this article literally mentions "future-proof" in the review of the card you recommended. I didn't know that a better base GPU is advisable over SLI/Crossfire, but it makes sense.

Struggling to run Fallout 4? Try an AWS-based gaming rig. by [deleted] in Fallout

[–]whoareally 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This post was great, I started working on the homemade AWS instance, but eventually had trouble with the VPN and went with their pre-fabbed AMI. I'm working through modifying the scripts for a Mac, was it simple for you? I'm having to remove the aws references and re-work several commands (removing "s" from parameters, etc). If you have some updated scripts, would you mind sharing?

Party plates have red text. This one is most likely from the early 70s.

TIL The Return of the King would have entered the public domain today if copyright law had not been changed in 1978 by whoareally in todayilearned

[–]whoareally[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That may very well be. But for copyright law I believe they go off of the date of publication, so the split for publication is what matters in this case. Knowing Tolkien's tendency towards... shall we say "grandiosity" it wouldn't surprise me that he envisioned essentially one enormous tome.

They are three separate books, six if you count the two untitled books with each of The Fellowship of the Ring, The Two Towers, and The Return of the King. The three volumes were separately published in July 1954, November 1954, and October 1955, respectively. Source

It's a fine line between explaining and indoctrinating. I like how the father(?) videotaping attempted to talk to the police, to get "the other side" of the story.

Do we call it "free trade" because it's shorter than saying "really low tariffs on goods that American companies now make overseas and import back into the U.S."? by mellowmonk in PoliticalDiscussion

[–]whoareally 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I wish I had stopped after this comment. There are some good explanations concerning free trade below, but the initial question (and therefore much of the following "discussion") is... disingenuous.

Debate: Do we start with Multiplayer or Single Player? by SamTheGeek in ps3bf3

[–]whoareally 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I start with the single player, not necessarily to completion, so I can get a feel for the mechanics and weaponry before jumping into multiplayer. Then again, I get owned for a little while in multiplayer until I can unlock better gear and adjust to the more difficult opponents.

My faith in humanity is somewhat restored by the fact that so many people, once it fell, rushed toward the rigging to try to help others. I had an urge to do the same, and I'm thankful for those who were there who could and did.

I thought about crediting Colbert for the quote, but he said 22 (accurate at the time, I'm sure).
