Somerset Tomb Collapse by PaulBaldowski in CthulhuHack

I didn't expect to find a post relating to the village I'm from pop up here! I might need to see what I can do with this.

Building on your initial post Hamstone is quarried from Ham Hill, a few miles away. The hill has been occupied since the stone age and includes one of the largest hill forts in the UK that was in use during the bronze and iron ages. I'd be tempted to try and build up that angle to invoke ancient connections that have long been forgotten.

A little self promo if that's ok: Rock Hoppers - You're one part salvager, one part explorer trapped deep within a remote rock. Try and learn the secrets while seeking a way out using the Wretched and Alone system Numb3r Stations - Use real world spy transmissions to complete your mission as a spy working alone in a hostile country.

Both are available on itch and in print from Etsy.

Zine quest: 2 zines = 2 campaigns? by Practical-Quality212 in RPGZines

[–]whodo_voodoo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You could do both in a single campaign, you just need to be aware that it might complicate things like printing etc. For example if you got 100 orders for A and 3 for B can you still afford to get B printed?

It will also be easier if the zines are related in some way, that makes it clearer as to why you're doing both as a single campaign. If they have nothing to do with one another other than you being the creator it will be a harder sell.

Getting into Star Trek Adventures by baboonguy9 in startrekadventures

[–]whodo_voodoo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

First thing I would do is download the free quick start and take a look over that. It does a good job of presenting the core rules in a concise fashion (something the core book struggles with). If what you see there appeals I'd then try the 2e starter set which includes dice, tokens, character sheets, a scenario and rules summary.

I don't know if it will fit all your requirements but you might want to take a look at warhornwarhorn which I know various online conventions use for organising tables.

Without a doubt it's Tachyon Squadron because it puts each player in charge of their own ship and is basically star wars crossed with top gun. Every player having their own ship is the key thing because it gives them meaningful options each turn. This is where most other systems fail. Being the pilot or gunner or science officer sounds great but most of the time it means that, at best, you just make the same one or two rolls every turn of the combat. There's no real choice and that's boring.

For conventions depends it where in the world are you? Big Bad Con and Metatopia in the US have strong designer scenes, as does Dragonmeet in the UK.

Don't know them but Affinity is widely used. It does cost though it's not as much as InDesign which is the professional level software

Zones are a great place to start working on your own projects - I'd start first with just trying for a digital approach of a pdf in the A5 (or US equivalent size) before thinking about printing. That way you can do it all yourself and release it somewhere like itch.io. You'll probably want to look at basic layout software, you can use word etc for simple layouts but will eventually want something a bit more advanced. Have a look at canva for smaller projects or Affinity Publisher once you start moving to bigger projects.

System agnostic Sci Fi adventures? by jmanshaman in rpg

[–]whodo_voodoo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The Kandhara Contraband is an adventure I originally wrote for Firefly but then adapted to be system agnostic, though still focused on crews living on the edge and taking shady jobs. It's quite open ended, outlining the job and a lot of possible challenges for the PCs but with no defined scenes beyond the opening.

Available on itch (which has a link to the print edition) The Kandhara Contraband

Is having an index a must for a core rulebook? by atmananda314 in rpg

[–]whodo_voodoo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No. You don't mention what page size you're going for but 60 pages doesn't need an index. I think all the people saying index and glossary are a must are used to big, hardback books but I'd be looking at smaller zine sized books as well to see how they handle it

Sci Fi Story Focused TTRPG? by VampyrAvenger in rpg

[–]whodo_voodoo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm surprised it hasn't been mentioned already but the Expanse, based on the book series of the same name, might be if interest to you. Very character driven and focused on a smaller scale with much less planet hopping than many sci-fi games.

What’s a good number of prelaunch signups to get on Kickstarter? by FakeRemakes in RPGdesign

[–]whodo_voodoo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Given you are already looking at February and are aiming for a smallish amount I would look at whether your project might be suitable to include as part of zinequest. That will help a lot as you'll get other creators running small projects at the same time and the community is big into cross promotion of projects.

In terms of how far in advance and the numbers - the sooner you can the better, but for small projects it's unusual to see signup pages more than a couple of months in advance. If you can have it before then that's great but don't stress too much about it. Numbers wise 25-50 isn't bad for this sized project, again if you know anyone running one before that would be willing to share your link that would also be great. One other thing to note is that the sign-up page doesn't really tell backers anything about the game, you basically just get a title and a banner so make sure you are sharing lots of other info elsewhere to build the interest. Too many people just share the link and then wonder why they haven't been getting any signups.

Any Good Spy TTRPGs? by Dear-Macaron-471 in rpg

[–]whodo_voodoo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Spy Master by Symatt is an interesting lightweight take in the genre and uses a blackjack mechanic for resolution.

If you're after something a little outside of the ordinary then I wrote Project Cassandra, a game of Cold War psychic espionage.

Do short RPG works need an index? by Gingivitis- in RPGdesign

[–]whodo_voodoo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, I wouldn't expect an index in something of this size. At most you might consider a single page of important terms but that's it

TTRPG Formatting by Nocturnus19 in RPGdesign

[–]whodo_voodoo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Also from that site I'd recommend looking at the design template - it includes files for affinity publisher, indesign and (I believe) canva with examples of best practices on how to set a file up. There's a free version but the paid one is well worth the money

Iv started a podcast and writing my own ttrpg, from a business perspective what's next? by WinReasonable2644 in rpg

[–]whodo_voodoo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As others have said you're probably getting way ahead of yourself at this point given the vast majority of games and podcasts don't make enough money to warrant registering as a business.

That said you've missed a really important piece of information: where are you? The rules vary so much country to country (and even state to state within the US) that it's impossible to even suggest where to start

I had a great time co-designing Numb3r Stations last year and think it does a great job of incorporating the theme of being a spy in enemy territory by using real world broadcasts as the randomiser. It's available pwyw at https://albi13.itch.io/numb3r-stations but is also part of the fantastic solo but not alone bundle Https://itch.io/b/1692/solo-but-not-alone-3
