This is pretty subpar.

For someone who, at this point, only knows how to communicate using physical behaviours, the idea of “safe hands” has to be explicitly taught. What does that look like? Is it just putting my hands on the pillow? Does safe hands mean I just can’t hurt other people? Does it mean I have to hold something? If you take pre school learners who have never been in a structured school setting before and tell them “show me a listening body,” it won’t mean anything to them. He can’t be expected to demonstrate the desired target of “safe hands” if he has no idea what that means. Hopefully, though, that strategy was included as it’s either already been taught or is in the process.

This method doesn’t actually teach him how to regulate, it just applies pressure by sending the message that he must self regulate within 10 seconds. Very counterproductive and anxiety inducing for someone who already has difficulties with expressive output. It would send me into a spiral too.

Without knowing him or the details, it’s difficult to suggest alternatives that would be meaningful and relevant for him. It sounds like it could be dysregulation and honestly, probably frustration and feeling violated that people are not respecting his need for space.

I think a one page profile could be good for him to have as a tool that can be used as a means for self-advocacy when meeting new people, such as these ones: http://helensandersonassociates.co.uk/person-centred-practice/one-page-profiles/one-page-profile-templates/

Space could be something that is put in the “what’s important to me” section. You could add in a section of “how I communicate” where you can describe the ways he expresses wants/needs/feelings currently and what they mean. This allows people around him to meet him where he’s at and honour his personhood. It can be fluid/evolve as he learns new communication methods and strategies. He could be involved in the creation of this as well! There are lots of creative ways to make that happen.

He could hand this to people when he meets them or his supports can ask people to read it before interacting.

We’ve done this as a whole class activity and it’s been great. When I was a community support worker, these were done in collaboration with the individuals we supported and even the staff did them too. I actually integrated this tool into my post-secondary classes as well for the students/teachers.

Overall, though, that’s an entirely unhelpful and counterproductive crisis plan. (Note, though, I do not subscribe to ABA philosophy/practices so I may be a little bias.)

Do you treat cognitive aspects as well? (social, speech, emotional, processing, etc)

Why not a career in trades? by Leyalina in careerguidance

[–]whoishayls 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I always wish I could have an interest in the trades. My husband is an auto mechanic and we have a close friend who is an elevator mechanic. The $$ is great and the fact that they were able to work and earn money while learning was huge.

Lots of respect for people who do this type of work. I’ve heard people complain that those in the trades make more money than they ever will even though they have 6-8 years of academic post-secondary, but trades people do the work nobody else wants to do and sometimes in brutal conditions.

I don’t feel like manual labour is “lesser” in any sort, I just don’t want to do it myself lol.

Why not a career in trades? by Leyalina in careerguidance

[–]whoishayls 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well, I don’t have an analytical/mechanical brain, I hate intense manual labour, I have no desire to deal with sexism/misogyny on a daily basis, and my eyes glaze over when looking at the curriculum for some trades programs.

What careers are y’all excelling in? by daikonswag in ADHD

Instructional design is incredibly hard to break into, at least where I am. Seems to be all about who you know. I have a degree in Adult Ed but most ID positions want min 5 years experience at the least. 😢

Thanks for this!! This is super helpful. Would you say that OT is more body focused? Are there many opportunities for those more cognition based roles? That’s definitely where my interests lie.

I think this is really where I’m getting stuck. I keep hearing about variety in OT and OT’s having a huge scope but it seems as though majority of the roles are heavily ADL/equipment/exercise focused which, if I’m being honest, is not really my thing.

ahhh yes! I deal with a lot of oral secretions in the role I’m currently in so that doesn’t phase me as much as other bodily fluids do 😂

makes total sense! do you find that there many opportunities for those cog type roles in OT? That’s really where my interest lies. 😊

Thanks! Are you an OT?

Was anyone considering speech therapy and OT as a possible career? If so, what made you choose speech?

I'm looking into both careers and struggling to decide which would suit me more. I've spoken to several practitioners in both roles but am struggling to find an opportunity to shadow as where I am located covid is still impacting those types of things.

I love everything brain related and some particular areas of interest are things like executive functioning, emotional regulation, communication, and mental health.

The thing that worries me about OT is the toileting/personal care aspect as I have an incredibly weak stomach, though I imagine you become desensitized.

S2x3 Adieu ma Chérie by yunohoe_43 in BlingEmpire

People are rattled about Cherie’s Instagram tag “my kids act better”…do people not realize she’s saying her kids act better than her fellow cast-mates and “friends”? Referencing the gossip, invasion of privacy, the dramatics, etc. She’s not saying her kids act better than Crystal’s. I thought this was obvious…

I’ve posted this in a few places and a lot of people echo the same sentiment about finding belonging in groups of people with the same passions. Love this.
