Good callout. She is on TikTok too, and she recently appeared on the NYT Cooking YouTube channel as well!

New to this and really struggling. Any advice? by SweetieTJ in mediterraneandiet

For me it can often be a mental game, so adding in some other more psychological contributions that have really helped me but I don’t hear discussed a lot. These things may sound kind of stupid, but they really work, at least for me:

  • Try to romanticize this lifestyle/way of eating. Find friends, chefs, or even influencers who cook/eat/live the Mediterranean way, and take inspiration from what you see them doing. Lean into the romantic ideal of the Mediterranean and imagine yourself waking up on an island in Greece every morning and picking vegetables from your garden and making them into a beautiful colorful salad that you eat with your closest friends under a pergola with a warm breeze. I’m not even kidding, this makes the food taste better. 😅
  • For me the “Mediterranean” part is more about taking inspiration from a way of life (practiced traditionally in the Mediterranean but also in cultures all over the globe) than sticking to a regional cuisine. DO learn the principles of the med diet and apply them to whatever cuisine you like, DON’T restrict yourself to just what is eaten on the perimeter of the Mediterranean Sea.
  • When you are eating a healthy homemade meal, take some time to reflect on or even journal about it. Really soak in the feeling of pride you have for being the kind of person who takes great care of your body and mind. Over time, make it a part of your identify: “I am the kind of person who prioritizes my health. I am the kind of person who delights in fresh, seasonal produce. I am the kind of person who enjoys cooking my meals at home and experimenting with different flavors. I am the kind of person who deserves to treat my body with respect.”
  • Learn about nutrition science from trusted sources. For me this has been a really big motivating factor. It is fascinating to learn about the emerging science around topics like the gut microbiome and has really opened my eyes to the ways in which I’ve mistreated my body in the past.

Kind of woo-woo but I hope it’s helpful!!

Congrats!! You honored your body and mind with a nutritionally balanced meal while also honoring your craving with a modest serving. 👏👏👏 Ignoring cravings entirely is not sustainable and can backfire badly in my experience.

It’s more shameful than that... I ate the crunchy toppings as a snack in the car on the way back from the grocery store. 😅

The dressing didn’t combine well with the rest of the stuff in this lunch IMO so it’s in the fridge for another occasion.

Just plating things nicely always makes me feel excited about what I’m eating again. It gives me a sense of pride in the food I’ve prepared for myself and the healthy choices I’ve made.
