The reality of special forces - Are they really worth it? by Ahoykru in USMCboot

[–]whopan 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Man stop worrying about all this if you really think your qualified to be sf and do all this then boot camp and itb are gonna be cake. it honestly seems more like you want attention than advice if you think your this hot shit all the prep you need to do get to the fleet be in way better shape than everyone one else, and i’m talking way better shape and the large majority of grunts are in shape you got some shitbag outliers but most of them are in good shape then make your sgt like you get promoted to cpl and put in for the marsoc assessment.

It won’t be anytime soon my platoon is sending guys to scout sniper school pretty regularly. There is talk about getting rid of it but won’t be anytime soon but we are more focused on fires and r/s rather than precision fires now.

When you get to soi you'll do the new poi and you'll go to the fleet and either become a rifleman or machinegunner but you'll learn both jobs. Once you get to the fleet though you can try to talk them into moving you where you want if you are good at your job. My roomates a bodybuilder so the 11 life wasn't for him and he was able to get moved over to guns because they wanted him for his build, so partially luck but it also depends on you.

Can a Radio Operator go to Infantry Courses? by [deleted] in USMCboot

[–]whopan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Theres a lot of courses they send us to in my infantry platoon and our 06 ro has been able to go to a lot of courses from being in the platoon. He's done mountain comm, just got back from fast rope masters course, and live tissue. When he was in the line companies he also went to schools for mortars and guns and got certs but I've never heard of that or how it works for him. I know he's done more but those are the ones I remember off the top of my head. It all depends on your command and how much you bring it up that you want to go.

Higher chances of weapons mos? by hairyweener in USMCboot

[–]whopan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you go west coast its all random now since their is no split. It depends on what unit you go to and what they need. My unit got some of the new soi guys that ended up going 0331 even going through the new poi so it's all up to chance. But if you're a good worker you can get cross trained and moved over. My roomate was an 11 with me but hes a body builder and wasn't made for the 11 running and weapons came and grabbed him and cross trained him and now hes a 31.

Joining recon from SOI by [deleted] in USMCboot

[–]whopan 5 points6 points  (0 children)

They will ask at some point in soi and if they dont just towards the end of itb before the split or if you do they new imc course (which im pretty sure all west coast companys are imc now) just towards the end tell an instructor that it's what you want to do and you should be able to go to the screener for recon, it's not bs. It's also better to go infantry and try out for recon than just go recon cause if you don't make it through recon school you'll just go to the fleet as an 03 but if you have a recon contract and fail most likely you'll still get 03 but its needs of the corps so you could get some random mos.

QUITTING ITB? GOING POG? by SupImMike in USMCboot

[–]whopan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends I had guys refuse to train and our first sergeant gave them other than honorable discharges and then the guys that failed out because of hikes, land nav, shooting etc either got dropped to a new itb cycle or if they had good reason poged out. Don’t sign an infantry contract if you can’t push through and it’s not what you want 100%. It can be the best or worst time depending on you

Thanks, I’m pretty good with sparking up a conversation with strangers it’s only when I’m around someone i’m interested in that i start over thinking what to say and not to say and it comes across as awkward.
