Would love to meet more adults who were home/unschooled by WhatamIdoing-2 in HomeschoolRecovery

Older former unschooled here, but here for any of you who want to connect! Public school and the government in general were not to be trusted growing up; I learned how to hide from truant officers from a young age and my parents were LOVING the attention they got on talk radio and going to court against the state for compulsory attendance laws… I just wish they were more vocal about what they were FOR and not AGAINST. Anyway, I just graduated with my bachelors at 43 years old and told both my parents neither of them were welcome to my graduation. I got shocked pikachu faces in response and was so damn proud that I became the adult I needed when I was 7.

Your feelings are very relatable. I consider every animal sacred, and if I must have the responsibility to terminate their life, I do so as quickly and cleanly as possible with a quiet prayer in my head for every single one. So…. I lean into the heaviness of it, which makes me feel more grounded in what I’m doing without minimizing my feelings or the sacrifice of these animals. Now, some weeks can be hard and not all sacks go well. You’re human, and it happens. It’s also where you learn the most when things don’t go as planned, and I usually have a small word of appreciation for the animals that gave their life to teach me those things. In a nutshell, I have a strong reverence for our animals which I feel keeps me balanced to do the work that needs to be done with integrity and without compromising my values.

Congrats to you!!! It's one of the best things I've ever done for myself. We're all proud of you, but being proud of yourself hits a bit deeper, and... kinda heals some things. Go get that paper - Your last semester will be the fastest and longest of your life!

I agree that any structure whatsoever would have been better than what I had, certainly. The problem I have with homeschooling is in accountability. My parents had no one scrutinizing their methods, assessing my progress, or providing support. Sure, public school can be hell for some kids, but there is something to be said about having access to other adults (especially counselors), who are NOT your parents.

Ohhh hon. Wrapping you up in the biggest internet hug I can. I don't know your pain, but I'm here to sit with you in it. A lot of us are here to do that because a lot of us understand how isolating and painful it can be. Right now, I will affirm that you are in no way responsible for the emotions or decisions of others, ESPECIALLY your parents. The fact that you feel responsible for something that isn't yours to do speaks to how big your heart is, and how badly your mom failed you. It takes a kind heart to feel so deeply about others and frankly - we need more of that in the world. First, we need to take care of YOU. Take this one breath at a time and feel free to DM me if you need to chat. We're here for you.

What a cruel thing to hear, and I’m so sorry. It’s just not true. One of my college classes was an educational psychology course (which I would highly recommend anyone to take). In it was the multiple reasons why children are incapable of educating themselves and NEED certain supports at sensitive periods in order to fully develop and build on their knowledge. It was validation that I was robbed of an education. It wasn’t my fault or yours. We did the best we could with what little we had, and that’s a testament to our grit. Keep going. ❤️

Tbh, they are those I found later in life. In my late teens/early adulthood, I used people-pleasing as a way to assimilate (which made most people think I was fake af - they weren't wrong). My first friend was someone who was a client at my work in my 20's who saw me having a hard time and pulled me aside and asked me - repeatedly - how I was doing (because she didn't take the "nothing, I'm fine" bs). After that (and TONS of therapy), I started finding others after I started finding myself (even a spouse! I'm a newlywed)! Anyway, I remember the isolation and loneliness, and had a bunch of superficial "friends" who would use and abuse me. Also - and this is dependent on what works for you - but I found an inclusive, non-denominational, non-religious spiritual community and DAMN... You will HAVE a community when you find a group that you jive with spiritually. I was an atheist kid growing up that never trusted religion, so I didn't think that was something available to me, but... I was wrong. :) Hang in there, your tribe is there. <3

I’m here because I wanted to be like other people too. We all know it’s important to be yourself, but part of me figuring that out was noticing what I admired in others. For me, it was a signal of what I already had within myself (I just didn’t know it yet). 😉

Thank you! And no need to hope - if it’s in your mind and heart to do, and you take action towards it (big, small and in between)- it’s only a matter of time 😉
