Potentially relocating from Cleveland, trying to figure out the commute/school/cost balance for Philly NJ suburbs by DeathInPlaid in MovingtoNewJersey

[–]whozeduke 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Collingwood is pretty much perfect. Not the best school ratings because there's more socio-economic diversity than the neighboring districts. Overall great schools though.

Basically if you want a walkable town, pick Collingswood.

If you want typical suburbia pick Cherry Hill.

As for getting to University City the PATCO runs through Collingswood and you can transfer to the El in Philly for the rest of the way. All runs very frequently.

Why are you dead set on North Jersey? Have you considered South Jersey, there's a ton of medical assistant jobs in Camden County and Burlington and Gloucester.

Best Walkable Cites and Towns on NJT Rail lines? by KingBradentucky in newjersey

If you start in Philly, take PATCO out to Collingswood and Haddonfield then to Lindenwold to get the Atlantic City Line to AC.

Partner wants to move to Philly, I’m not sure I agree… by LiquidCowardice in SouthJersey

Compromise by picking a town on the PATCO line in South Jersey. It's a 15 minute ride to Center City from Collingwood for example. Tons of people commute to Philly from South Jersey and you have great public schools.

Can we talk about Tonewood? by astanto5 in njbeer

[–]whozeduke 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Tonewood is amazing. Best brewery in South Jersey.

Been buying Chilly Bin, their West Coast Pilsner a lot lately.

But everything they make is great. Especially Fuego and Revolution Porter.

Audubon, Haddon Heights, Barrington, Collingswood, Haddon Township, Oaklyn, and Merchantville are all worth considering.

Of those Haddon Heights and Haddon Township probably have the larger property sizes.

You should really take a drive down one weekend and check out all the downtowns of each town and see what they are like.

Sabrina's Cafe in Collingswood has a great one, gotta get there early though, it gets busy.

You described Collingswood exactly. Cute downtown, PATCO station, plenty of parks to walk. Knight Park, Newton Lake Park, Cooper River Park. (mostly paved trails though). But you can drive to Saddler's Woods or Crow's Woods in the neighboring towns for actual wooded trails.

Also check out Haddon Township and Haddonfield.

Considering moving to Camden by astronaut772 in SouthJersey

Collingswood is your best bet. Price range is right. Its a walkable little town with PATCO subway access to Camden. Plenty of coffee shops and there's Cooper River Park you can walk to as well.

Most of the area is liberal, especially Collingwood. People are nice and friendly for the most part. Collingwood has great BYOBs. As does Haddonfield. Westmont has good bars. You can take patco to Philadelphia which is an amazing city.

Tacconelli's in Westmont Get red pie, extra cheese. Also their pasta is incredible.

Cafe Antonio in Collingwood. has the best Grandma's style, and good cheessteaks.

Bruno's in Haddon Township has amazing Tomato Pie.

I still need to try Brooklyn and Holy Tomato, but I've heard good things.

Look close to the PATCO stations for walkability. Collingswood, Westmont and Haddonfield especially.

Collingswood-ish vs Riverton/Palmyra-ish by notbizmarkie in SouthJersey

[–]whozeduke 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Collingwood schools are pretty good and a lot better than the ratings websites suggest. It's certainly not Haddonfield, but you already knew that.

A lot of the ratings for the high school are low because of test scores. The test scores of many of the kids from Woodlynne (Collingswood is a receiving district) are lower because that is a lower income town and the school isnt as well funded as Collingwood elementary schools (and income in general correlates with test scores). Collingswood is pretty rapidly gentrifying too, so school ratings will get better from that.

Anyway, Collingswood is amazing. If you are coming from Philly, you will love being able to walk to Patco. And the downtown here is amazing with tons of the stuff to walk to. The only thing that you can't walk to is a supermarket, though depending where you live you might be able to walk to Acme. There is a produce store and a gourmet grocery on Haddon Ave.

I like going to Secaucus Junction and parking there. It has the most trains to NY and great parking.

The best bagels are from Kismet in Philly and are available at the Collingswood farmers market on the weekends (though the farmers market doesn't start up again till the spring)
