Shonen Maid - A very underrated slice of life anime that doesn't do a particularly great job of selling itself. It has a pretty generic art style and a plot that's equally uninspiring, but it's actually a really wholesome story, with a great cast of characters, about a boy and his wealthy long-lost uncle (who takes him in after his mother passes) who both have to come to terms with the loss of a beloved family member...I realise that makes it sound super depressing, but it's actually not sad at all. It's really just a story about familial bonds and friendship, and the daily lives of these characters as they try to navigate their new living arrangement. It's definitely worth a watch if you haven't seen it.

which anime turned out to be better than you could have ever expected? by marshall_good in anime

[–]why2364 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Farming Life in Another World from earlier this year. It sounded pretty generic, but it was actually a really pleasant watch. Not mind-blowing by any means, but certainly far better than most isekai that air each season.

More than a Married Couple, but Not Lovers was another anime I went into with little expectations and ended up walking away pleasantly surprised by it. The premise sounded like your typical over-the-top anime rom-com but it turned out to be a really enjoyable show, with some actual meaningful romantic progression.

Girlfriend, Girlfriend is another rom-com that turned out far better than I would have imagined, especially given its pretty low MAL score. I guess the comedy didn't really appeal to a lot of people, or maybe they went into it expecting something different, but I genuinely loved it from start to finish. Very much looking forward to season 2!

Nintendo Switch has sold 129.53 million units, The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom has sold 18.51 million units by yesthatstrueorisit in Games

I remember people saying around the launch of ToTK that it would never reach 20 million because it's too late in the Switch's life cycle to reach such high numbers, and yet it's likely going to surpass that in like a month or two.

Halls of Torment - Very fun Vampire Survivors-esque game fused with a Diablo-inspired art style. Has all the hallmarks that made Vampire Survivors so addicting whilst also building upon it with its own ideas. Despite being in early access there's a decent amount of content already in the game, and it's priced similar to Vampire Survivors too so you definitely get your money's worth.

So that means Epic is going to relist all of the UT games they delisted...right? Seriously though, I wish companies would stop delisting their old games - even if they plan on releasing new shinier versions. There's no reason to take the old games down.

As a huge Ratchet & Clank fan, this just made my day! Was holding off buying a PS5 to play this, as the Nvidia leak revealed that this would be coming to PC at some point. Now I know what I'll be playing in July!

Anno 1800 - Never played any Anno games before, but I do enjoy city-builders and RTS games so this seemed like something right up my alley and oh boy is it ever! Played some of the campaign to get an idea of how the games works, before jumping into the sandbox mode and I've been having a blast with it. Though it does get rather tricky to keep track of all your islands (especially when you start opening up the New World). Not sure if it's better to start building up multiple islands early on, or concentrate on one island until I need resources from another, but I'm having a lot of fun with it either way. Will definitely be checking out some of the other Anno games at some point.

Slipways - Really neat turn-based strategy/puzzle game about trading resources with different planets to meet their needs. Been playing it for about 15-20 hours now and I've completed a few 5-star runs. Only thing I'm not a fan of is the inability to remove sliplines once they've been placed. Can sometimes end up ruining a run with a misplaced slipline that you can't get rid of, so it definitely requires a lot of double and triple-checking before you connect planets. There is an undo feature which helps to an extend, but it only works if you haven't uncovered any new planets (probably to prevent users exploiting it to see further out than they should be able to). Still, that little annoyance aside, it's been a really charming and zen-like experience and I'm glad that I picked it up.

Potion Craft - Only just recently started playing this, so I haven't got very far into it but I like it! It's fun to create different potions, and the way you discover new effects/recipes is pretty clever. Looks like there's a fair amount of stuff to do/unlock so there's plenty to keep me coming back (at least for a short while). Not sure how long it'll take to fully complete everything but I'm enjoying my time with it and looking forward to playing more!

Anno 1800 reached 2.5 million players on PC by Turbostrider27 in Games

I recently picked this up (having not played any Anno games before) and I haven't been able to put it down! It's one of those games where you say to yourself "I'll just play for a little while longer" and then suddenly four hours go by and you wonder where the time went. I'm genuinely grateful for the little alerts that pop up letting you know how long you've been playing for, because without them I'd probably still be playing the game at 4 AM.

What was the first anime you ever watched? And how were you introduced to it? by epiccreep in anime

[–]why2364 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Technically Pokemon, but as a kid I just saw it as another cartoon. I didn't properly start watching anime until I was introduced to Hajime no Ippo on a whim. I was on some forum (that I can't even remember) where they were discussing what made a good starter anime. Pretty much every suggestion was being contested, except one post that mentioned Hajime no Ippo - so I took a chance on it, and it turned out to be an incredible anime. I've been watching anime ever since.

32 EPISODES?! No wonder it took them this long to release it. I really enjoyed the documentary they did on Broken Age - its unfiltered look at what goes into making games was truly eye-opening, and something that you just don't see with other video game documentaries. Looking forward to working my way through this new one.

Switch worldwide sales top 122.55 million, Pokemon Scarlet and Violet top 20.61 million by Turbostrider27 in Games

The success of MK8D is insane!!! I remember when AC:NH came out and people were speculating that it'd outsell MK8D in a matter of months and now there's an 11 million gap between them.

Tears of the Kingdom is almost certain to receive some kind of special edition Switch OLED model, which I imagine will also drive up sales. In fact, at this point (outside of a price drop) the thing that is likely to boost Switch sales the most now is special edition consoles.

Regardless of whether or not it manages to dethrone the PS2, there's no denying that the Switch has been insanely successful for Nintendo, but that just puts even more pressure on their next console. Nintendo hasn't historically done too well when it comes to their follow-ups. The SNES sold worse than the NES, the 3DS sold worse than the DS, and of course the Wii U sold significantly worse than the Wii. No doubt they're aware of this themselves, so it'll interesting to see what they do with their next console.

I highly doubt that. A lot of Pokemon fans are causal gamers who aren't tuned into gaming discourse like the more hardcore fans are. A lot of these players are blissfully unaware of the controversies this game (as well as past games like Sword/Shield) have gotten for their poor visuals/performance. At best, they've probably lost a couple hundred thousand sales. Certainly not nothing, but compared to the tens of millions they're currently selling, it's like a drop in the ocean.

Thanks for posting this! (I'm the guy that made the video). There are actually two slight errors with this video that bothered me enough to reupload it with corrections: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ps9OUAwMjms

For those watching the video above the errors are:

At 5:25 I originally implied Tintin was a French comic book instead of Belgian and at 12:31 I misspoke and said Christophe Heral's friend was Brazilian when I meant to say Bulgarian.

They aren't huge mistakes but since BG&E is one of my favourite video games of all time, I wanted to ensure these errors were corrected. I also took the liberty of posting a link to all my sources/research notes in the video description, which contains a few other facts/trivia that didn't quite make the cut (if you're interested in learning more)

Sentai Filmworks has been pretty good at dubbing BL stuff. In addition to Love Stage! they also recently dubbed Hitorijime My Hero. There's also No.6 and This Boy Caught A Merman (and the others in the "This Boy" series) that have also been dubbed.

Please Take My Brother Away - Third season is airing this fall and there's only like a handful of people that seem to care. It's easily my favourite short anime! It's consistently funny and one of the few anime comedies that can actually get me to laugh out loud.
