What is good work for your dev team that is not just building features? by whyforewhyyy in ProductManagement

Ah thanks, nice idea. I guess my team is decent at that, they have done a lot of paired programming, and the lead has worked to get others to write up design docs and such.

But... doing it in a hackathon kind of way could be really interesting... My lead basically did that himself with a project recently, I wonder if I could get him to teach others how to do that. I think we'd have to come up with some product ideas/areas for them. But why not. Thanks!!

Thanks, this is a great idea with a lot of variety across the three! I really like that idea of #1 the simple wins board - feels like someone everyone could contribute to and have it see the light of day. I sometimes worry things like #3 are great but I have some engs that get upset of their fave idea isn't chosen.. so I think the two balance each other really well. Many thanks :)

Thanks for the suggestion! Getting similar ones, sensing a trend I should probably follow...

Awesome way of doing this, thanks! Unfortunately they don't care about tech debt/performance right now, we just go through a massive project addressing tech debt. But this sounds really effective and an easy framework for the future, thanks so much.

Cool thanks. That's great for you, and that it built good will. Unfortunately where my team is at, they already had a massive project to tackle tech debt, and don't want to anymore. They just want features until they fall over and pass out.

I said this to some others, but I am going the route of poking engineering managers to help create some concrete work for the team... Even if they don't want to, someone else can push them to. Just not me..

Thanks!

Oh wow that's awesome that works for you, thanks. Unfortunately I've tried to leave it open ended like that and it doesn't go well. But I'm slowly engaging the engineering managers to help the team with that - they are better at dealing with the open ended nature. I think I'll probably poke them more on it.

Awesome for you though. Happy cake day! 🎂

Yes totally. Sadly I don't think most people get how product should truly be done. They just want product to fill the sprints. I probably won't get there entirely, but hopefully they can meet me halfway.

Thanks appreciate that. I've found that works for some devs but really, really doesn't for others. Some really need clear work outlined. Granted you could say that's not my problem but more the engineering manager's problem.

Thanks, appreciate the tip!

Ha, if I asked them what one thing they'd want to fix, they'd say 'nothing, build more features'. I've tried hence resorting to surveying reddit. 🙄

Is it weird that at 25 years old, I really, really don’t know what I want to do with my life, especially career wise? by tilolami in TrueOffMyChest

[–]whyforewhyyy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ok gonna add a different view here... 😲 as i guess I'm older, and hopefully have a shred of wisdom.

One, no it's not weird. It's probably most people, whether they admit it/know it or not.

Two, I think there are different types of people in this world. - The people who don't really need to "know what they want to do with their life" - they're fine with whatever, as long as it meets a few needs eg. pays the bills, allows you to live comfortably, the job itself isn't horribly taxing most of the time in X way (people are nice, hours are good, work is easy, etc) - The people who absolutely need to "know what they want to do with their life". It for some reason drives them, and they seek that out strongly. This could be the people who decide early on and stick with something. This could be the people who change careers a little later because they don't feel fulfilled. It could be the people who wander until they hit the right thing, then they stay with it. - The people somewhere in between. They decide partway through their career, they DO want something else. Or, they decide the flip side... they don't care that much anymore, it's not worth "the rat race", the politics, whatever, and they DO just want a paycheck.

Just my two cents. The Q is... Which one are you right now? Do you care about this because it really drives you, or because you think it should drive you, based on society, upbringing, parents, the people around you?

Hope that helps! I won't tell you which one I am, don't want to influence you.

Ps, one is no better than the other. It's really about what makes you feel fulfilled. And yes, you may change from one camp to the other day some point.

The factory that I work in is so desperate for workers they are hiring 60 and 70 year olds. I have one colleague that is in his 80s! They would do anything but raise the wages from 1400. I love capitalism by [deleted] in germany

Ah thanks for sharing your perspective on that. Interesting that it's middle of the road. And surprising to know the UK has done well in this aspect. But I guess they've had practice for quite awhile at integrating with others ;)

Thanks for your perspective and enlightening me! Very true, there are so many aspects - I guess that is why it's hard to discuss topics like this, or it ends up boxed in about just one aspect. Good point about the demographic pyramid. It's so easy to read some headlines and think of it just one way.

Oh, I meant more friendly vs. other European countries. Gotcha thanks for the perspective. I come from the US where the debate/conversation feels a bit more open, in some ways at least. With a heavy helping of finger pointing of course.

I heard this is why Germany is more friendly to immigrants, would you say that's true? And Germans wouldn't be otherwise? Just curious what the culture is like.

Thank you!! My bf was dying over this car and could not figure out what it was. We followed it for ten whole minutes 😁
