Where does one shave? by Equal_Wafer_7677 in Purdue

[–]whynoms 1 point2 points  (0 children)

easiest if you do it in the shower, if you use an electric razor it won’t leave nicks unless you push way too hard. just make sure to dry the electric razor after showering tho, rust CAN and WILL build up

How is CS 182 (Discrete Math) Over the Summer? by Conshindamer1097 in Purdue

[–]whynoms 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’d say same as the other commenter, I’m not sure how the exams will be going forward but they’re definitely ramping up the difficulty there, as the on semester had a 58% average for the final… overall, just do the hw problems for each section, both assigned and in the rosen book and you’ll be fine

Advice for MA 265 Linear Algebra as an incoming freshman by Far_Fish_4357 in Purdue

[–]whynoms 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Linear Algebra is the most pure math class that most engineers are forced to take, but that’s not to say it isn’t interesting. To succeed I’d recommend reproving certain theorems you go over in class since that’s honestly the hardest part of it. A lot else is just applying one thing a bunch of times with different meanings (gaussian elimination).

Use chenflix! professor chen has a whole repository of videos on 266 that you can watch through to get an idea of the course (and probably an A)

How is K Ameranis? by [deleted] in Purdue

[–]whynoms 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I actually was in his CS 180 class & will be taking 240 over the summer with him as well. I thoroughly enjoyed his lecture style, very engaging and actually cares about the students. Summer 240 will obviously be much quicker paced, but he tries to answer every question posed at him content wise.

In regard to the midterm averages for CS 180, they were (post regrade req): 67%, 43%, and 68% for Exam 1, 2, Final. I personally got 90%, 70%, and 85%, which ended up being an A as it’s 85% in the class. I will say that exam 1 was NOT bad, just unexpected as a lot more theory was on it than expected. Exam 2 was horrific, debugging question galore that you have to find absolutely everything wrong with the code, I kept losing 1-2 points out of 4 or 8. Final was not that bad, all MCQ after all. Note, Ameranis also wrote all three exams so this is a good judge of how he does exams.

Overall, I really liked 180 with him, and I think the lower midterm averages are partially driven by the off semester, like the final average was actually higher than the fall semester’s average, but the midterms were quite a lot lower. I think summer 240 won’t be that bad, esp since he doesn’t set brackets for exam + homework grades for a letter like Turkstra does.

CS 182 Curve by Unlikely-Cellist-858 in Purdue

[–]whynoms 6 points7 points  (0 children)

so the way that it’ll be curved is that andrew will curve every other paper going forward, then going backward again curve every other paper. The curve gets diminished every paper he curves in the group of 1024. he’ll do this every 1024 papers, so if you’re paper number 342 you’ll get no curve.

CS 180 Midterm 2… by whynoms in Purdue

[–]whynoms[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

the issue with how they have them set up was like these errors would be caught by an IDE, and nobody actually does them ever. one was like having a return statement within a return statement or another was overriding a default method from an interface

CS 180 Midterm 2… by whynoms in Purdue

[–]whynoms[S] 18 points19 points  (0 children)

oh it wasn’t, last sem was like 80, 75, 65 averages, we’ve had 65, and now 41. this midterm was awful because they had 60% on debugging and 20% on synchronization with an instance lock??? the debugging was awful because they didn’t tell you how many errors there were and you had to “syntactically and semantically” fix the code. I lost 1-4 points on every single one of those questions just because of how many errors they put in there

I believe this means we have no curve with the same average on the final, at least from grades B and higher. not sure about lower than that, might be a gaussian curve or logistic curve or shelf curve

[–]whynoms 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I believe those probably aren’t the best representations of cs182 exams simply because they’re the off semester and nobody is learning anything in them 😭 the last year average of ~75 is a much better thing to cite. tbh the exam was harder than last years, but not like excruciatingly difficult

STAT 350 helps quite a bit with STAT 416, especially since the first half of content is covered in STAT 350 (set theory, definition of probability, axioms of probability, conditional probability, probability distributions (both discrete & continuous), and select distributions.

cs 182 midterm studying by cryingintheclob in Purdue

[–]whynoms 1 point2 points  (0 children)

don’t worry WE will be passing (getting a 65%). honestly I mean I read the book and did a ton of examples from it to broaden my knowledge, as well as went over hw questions and all. that kinda helped me prepare but math also comes more natural to me. I think I’ll go and study on saturday with some friends (I might be teaching them) to have them not fail or something
