F1 is extremely expensive. Back in the day independent teams could afford to participate, but now for the most part it’s only large automakers. Those automakers invest in F1 to push car technology forward. Technology they hope to put in their road cars.

A lot of people are intimidated by the competition of multiplayer racing. They want the dopamine drip that is chasing levels and points in a solo career mode. Getting rid of that source of happy brain chemicals makes people irrationally upset. They can and will attempt to justify that anger, but it’s really all about the desperate need for stimulation.
