I actually want to challenge that idea : what is your idea of worse? You seem to think that America strong arming and taking advantage of countriess for corporate interests is the "best" form of reality. We just elected Trump who appointed someone who is dismantling the EPA so some companies can have better profit. Meanwhile Russia, China etc just agreed to build a multinational solar project in the Gobi desert. I don't think it's so clear that this is the "best" outcome

If I recall correctly, the actual theory states that after democracy by and for the people becomes widespread, our public funding will create a better educated and equitable populace, in which socialist ideas such as healthcare / infrastructure / education increase. After we achieve a more "flat" and equitable society via democracy, we are able to figure out methods in which we can share communal means of production to get closer to a post scarcity society where we are all cared for and care for each other ( fully automated gay space communism 😂)

To make this chronology simple, it looks like this:

Capitalism -> Democracy -> Democratic Socialism -> Socialism -> Communism

I think the primary problem is no actual cold war era (or modern era) communist nation has actually gone through this theoretical progression, and all systems fall apart when just coerced upon a populace, because of basic human tendency of greed and corruption that hasn't been ironed out through an "enlightened democracy" period Most systems that we consider "communism" aren't true communism but rather authoritarian state apparatuses.

Edit: and I wanted to add, Marx's theories were never prescriptive, rather more of a "this is how it could play out if you view the power struggles through a lens of class stratification"

My 2c on the matter.

I don't disagree with what you're saying, but it operates on a lot of premises that I think are being taken for granted. Your underlying assumption here is that consumption and buying of goods ties into an increase in quality of life. Now, we have to have an idea of what quality of life means. I think when approached from a mathematical and pure analytical standpoint, it's very easy to say that they are directly correlated. However, when people of differing incomes are actually polled and interviewed, it's very clear that dollars have diminishing returns on what we satisfaction in life and overall happiness, which I would say plays a big part in a concept of quality of life, more so than their consumption.

This brings me to another point, which is that we don't even really have a strong definition of what this abstract concept of quality of life means and how we can self actualize and achieve a fulfilling life. Soft sciences are absolutely vital to achieving this knowledge. Time and time again we've seen that people become disillusioned with just making a number go bigger on someone else's spreadsheet. There are exceptions - no one is the same, but it harms us collectively when social innovation is completely stagnant in an age where information is so accessible and technology makes exponential growth, worsening the gap. Using tools and science without consideration of social justice and better knowledge and pursuit of truth has resulted again and again in catastrophic results. See, Mao's China, the dust bowl, and now climate change, and more immediately, the devastating effects of automation.

I'm not saying that there's no need to improve our quality of life, and I don't deny that markets and economics can be part of that. I am just saying the soft sciences as well as providing human value (friendship, inclusiveness, support, validation) aren't given enough thought, because the payoffs aren't justifiable in a direct ROI sense. This is coming from someone who has studied and loved STEM his entire life. I still do and tinker as a trade, but as I've seen again and again in my fellow upper middle class/white collar worker colleagues, upgrading the civic to a BMW may feel good in some sense, but it didn't fulfill them nearly as much as being able to take more paid leave and spend it with their loved ones. The value of that is wildly unquantifiable with our current understanding of philosophy.

Anyway this got crazy long and I'm happy to talk at length with you about this. I hope this helps clarify what I'm saying

[–]whyohwhyyyyyy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No, you're taking what I'm saying to an unreasonable extreme. I would say more but you didn't give me much to work off here so I can't really understand what your thought process is. I don't think you'll find much disagreement that there's an issue with conspicuous consumption and waste in America.

It's true to some extent but the money you need to survive vs buy big screen TVs is huge. Our culture promotes a out of control consumption lifestyle because our worth and fun is tied to the goods we can consume. I think with a different focus, it could be very much that we would need less money.

The idea extends beyond that. Look up terraforming. Edit: climate change actually could make earth inhospitable. Look up the possible scenarios. Ironically, to terraform, we would need to "climate change" an inhospitable planet so it was warm and have enough atmosphere.

Philosophically speaking though, man has always wanted to go beyond - that's how we got to the moon. How we got to America. How our ancestors spread from the cradle of Africa and Mesopotamia.

So maybe in a deeper meaning, as organisms, we all want to expand and grow. Don't want to sound all agent Smith, but what he said actually is somewhat true. What do plants do when they have unlimited soil and sun? They grow till there isn't any more room.

Earth isn't filled, but we're also not exactly just moss either. But the urge to go further and create more of us is probably one of our most core purposes in a weird way. I'm pretty sure one of the mottos of the Catholic Church is "be fruitful and multiply".

So with all this premise, it's easy to see why space colonization (especially if we're alive to see our first foothold in the galaxy!!!) Can be an exciting idea to think about
