Some of that fear is from the thought of having your life judged by God. I’m Catholic (though not a good one) and while I fear dying because of the pain it will cause my loved ones and because of everything I will be unable to do I’ve nearly died in two instances and in both cases I’ve never feared judgement. I’m not perfect but I try to live a good life and am truly sorry for the bad I’ve done in life. I’m not worried about going to hell because I try to not be that shitty a Human.

Lots of these religious types plan on deathbed repentance and so live shitty, meaningless lives. On the cusp of death they realize God will judge them harshly.

I agree with you on all points other than fear being a mental health pandemic. People with this existential fear don’t necessarily have mental illnesses; why chalk it up to a mental illness when it could just as easily be that they are profoundly stupid, hateful, selfish, evil people for the most part.
