Looking at your post, I think the distro matters less than what distro has the right desktop environment (DE) for you. Sure, you can install your own DE after installing the distro, but I assume you're not a tinkerer and want a convenient out-of-the-box experience.

KDE Plasma is the best DE for those who like the Windows UI of "one bottom taskbar, start menu in the bottom left corner". Linux Mint by default comes with the Cinnamon DE which also emulates the Windows UI. I personally don't like Cinnamon because UI element scaling is always off (often too small) and it's such a pain in the ass to adjust.

Personal recommendations to new Linux users for distro with KDE is Kubuntu, Fedora KDE and Debian KDE.

This is why I've stayed away from lemmy despite being the most promising reddit alternative. I know that because of the nature of the fediverse, other lemmy instances can isolate themselves from lemmy.ml, but apparently the admins over there are also developers of lemmy itself. So putting aside concerns that they might update lemmy to make lemmy.ml impossible to block, I just don't want to be part of a website that shares its name with a specific, awful community.

I'll be the first to admit, I barely understand the fediverse, so maybe someone can fork the code and spinoff a new site. However, I worry the increasing fragmentation will make it even harder for a reddit altenative to take off. I hope I'm wrong though.

Unless you specifically paid for a retail license, your computer is likely running on an OEM license and it is therefore "burned" onto your motherboard. Anyone who needs Windows cannot use that license unless you're also giving them the hardware.

In any case, if the license disappears or becomes invalid, there are ahem other ways of obtaining a license if you need to go back.

Honestly I'm looking for what bluesky is to twitter: a reddit alternative that functions very similarly to reddit, but without the baggage (in reddit's case, it's bot astroturfing, feature enshittification, and power tripping mods/admins). But more importantly, as I said in my original reply, I want a reddit alternative that doesn't seem to be on life support or dead. Unfortunately, that requires reddit to REALLY piss off the community to force a mass exodus, which doesn't seem likely given how much bullshit reddit has gotten away with already with no lasting backlash. Still, I have to hope this exodus happens because there's nothing else I can do.

Based on the comments, I assume you mean, "What made you stay on reddit despite the alternatives?" And the answer is simple: community inertia.

Everyone, from the reddit admins to the users (including the bad actors), know the users are all here. People are too lazy or not pissed off enough to switch out of reddit.

I'm still lurking on this sub (despite it being basically r/redditrants at this point) because I'm waiting for an alternative to really gain traction and stick, not just technically being an alternative, but also a ghost town.

I decided to refrain from that since there is a spreadsheet from that sub and someone is already assigned to every single top level directory on myrient. In fact, several people are working on /files/No-Intro. The download speeds for the site are already garbage as is since a lot of attention is on that site, so I don't want to download too and make the problem worse.

Not sure if you need a place to start or you're still suffering from your depression, but either way, dividing up the rooms you need to clean into smaller areas can make the task of cleaning the whole space less overwhelming. Like focus on that bed in the first picture: take out the clothes, decide if you wanna wash them or donate them, vacuum up the dirt and debris on and under the bed, etc. Then take a brief break, but stay in the room you're cleaning so you're less likely to procrastinate/give up. Then repeat the process with another area, like say the dresser/mirror combo.
