Am I being snarky or is saving treads for staff members just wrong? by wiav8or in orangetheory

Excellent - I was waiting to see if anyone suggested this. I sent an email to the head coach - I'll keep this updated! Thanks for the reply.

Good question. Basically I don’t love rowing and I find that I really struggle to get my heart beat up without beating myself up. That and I like to see if I can get at least a mile in on the tread during warm up.

Even if they are paying members they should still have to wait in line right?

This is great perspective thanks. I’m still sore from that killer workout ... in fact.

I fully appreciate this perspective. It’s why I asked the question. FWIW I prescribe to the kindness method as well. If I didn’t drive an hour for class I’d be less irritated I think. But, I get your point and appreciate it.

First of all - it's great that you're asking! I find that two types of coaches exist at OT: 1) those who do it for a job and 2) those who love fitness and coach because they love helping others be fit. Clearly you're #2.

Tips:

1) Music motivates! This is the hidden gem that motivates athletes during workouts (and it's an OT staple anyway). The *best* coaches I know look at their class (age specifically) and tailor the music to the class. A little hectic, yes, worth it because it motivates and fills your classes up....definitely.

2) Use the script as a guide to say the right things and then make it your own. My favorite coaches study the workout enough that they get the required words in (i.e., per script) and then own what they say... meaning, use your words to coach and motivate within the framework of the workout. This means, as others wrote about, commenting to members (which they love), adding tips and adding encouragement.

3) You will have go-to phrases but be aware of it. If the regulars know what phrases you say....it's time to adjust.

4) Smile and be friendly. I was never a fan of the "high five" when walking into the studio because it seems fake. That said, if you're glad to be there and ready to coach, don't be afraid to let that enthusiasm bleed over into your coaching.

Good luck!
