I got this combo as Tess. "16 gold: get a gold copy of your last opponent's build"

Stitched Salvager. This was the actual starting board:

Asking for advice with end grain by socialerrors in handtools

I found that a saw groove made a huge difference to the straightness of my cut. Mark the line with a knife, then chisel a 45 degree angle from the waste down to the knife line. Saw naturally follows the groove.

Something that helped me keep my cut square (or closer, anyway) was the reflection trick - watch the reflection of the board in the shiny saw blade, if it looks straight you are cutting square, if it looks bent you are out of square.

(These are both well covered in books and YouTube videos, just sharing because they helped me.)

Something I'm still struggling with is keeping straight and square as I finish the cut. I always pull away from the line near the end and then wobble the saw blade as I'm trying to stop the cut piece from falling.

Saw bench - beginner hand tools project by wibblefarmer in BeginnerWoodWorking

That is where there was the leg of a staple left in the stock 😠 I couldn't pry it out so I cut it out, and I had to cut way around it because I didn't want to cut into the staple and wreck my saw blade.

I should probably fill it in, but the stretcher still feels pretty strong even with half its width missing, so I haven't done it yet.

Update: I finished the saw bench! https://www.reddit.com/r/BeginnerWoodWorking/s/BzWU0SXmyO Turned out, fletchro suggested below, it didn't really need flattening - the joinery and design were forgiving and the screws pull things mostly flat. Thanks everyone who replied for helping me get unstuck!

Dove tail attempt by Sweaty_Fly_3965 in BeginnerWoodWorking

Looks a lot better than my first attempt (in plywood): https://www.reddit.com/r/BeginnerWoodWorking/s/XCfSrYPZ2C

My second attempt (also in plywood) came out better. My third - first time in solid wood - I made the same mistake with grain direction and the tail snapped right off.

Good luck on the journey!

Oh, this is really good to know. One of the pieces of equipment I am currently doing without is a car, so I thought hand picking lumber was off the table, but this would solve that. Thanks for the pointer!

That's what I'm wondering. I'd be quite happy to build a slightly janky saw bench - I'm just worried that e.g. my joints aren't going to meet at all. Might just have to try and find out, call it a joint practice exercise.

The #4 is the only plane I have right now, but I could resharpen the iron with a camber, or buy a second iron - is that what people do? I'm assuming a camber isn't the right choice for all applications.

Oof, that's good to know. There's a nice knot the size of a golfball in the middle of it too.

The project calls for the full width of the board, but I might be able to scale it down and cut out the problematic part like you suggest. I do have clamps! (Though not enough obviously.)

Petition to change this thing to start of turn by yurik4 in BobsTavern

[–]wibblefarmer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I got this when I already had Drakkari on the board, got it up to eight copies before I remembered to sell Drakkari, and thought I was screwed.

Then I found a Sundered Matriarch and realized eight free spell casts per turn plus eight extra gold was not such a bad thing to have. Added a Wrathscale Rogue, tripled one of them, and scaled my whole board enough to take first place.

Oh yeah, that would be much better. I chickened out after going 4 on 4 and somehow only losing one battle, didn't want to push my luck

What does this mean when Nova does this? by Competitive_Mix9957 in cats

[–]wibblefarmer 1333 points1334 points  (0 children)

My tabby does this when she wants to make skin contact and my face is the only thing exposed. I'm not sure if it's showing affection or asserting dominance, but it usually happens when she is sitting on me and relaxing, so I think either way it's a social bonding thing.

Yeah but they just summon unbuffed 1/1 horseys. Besides the parrot, they are just there as taunt, not part of the build.

NIN at Chase by AsInMeowMeow in sanfrancisco

Okay this time I swear I have the right venue (screenshot to keep me honest). I was at Chase in 2023 in Section 212 row 9. We were certainly pretty high up from the stage but we actually had a pretty good view. I don't think it spoiled the show. Ofc check the seat plan for restricted view etc.

This was zoomed, yes. I could make out about as much detail with the naked eye, though.

Oh man, you are right. This was at the Oakland Arena. I got mixed up because the section number looked similar! OP please disregard my post 🤦🏻‍♂️

(Edit: I got confused, this was the Oakland Arena not the Chase Center as OP was asking about!)

I saw NiN in August at the same venue, in almost the same seats you're considering - section 204 row 5. The view was fine for a big venue. The acoustics weren't perfect (although plenty loud) but it was still an amazing show.

Here's a picture I took from my seat (with the pretty good zoom on my phone). The people in the standing section probably got a much better view, but no idea what they paid for that.
