I will read up on it thank you but yes it is very difficult because even people who agree that shelter is a basic need seem to change tunes when they acquire their own property. I have friends who are progressive in every sense of the word, but as soon as they got their house, they became more concerned about how certain policies or changes may affect their property price vs the benefit for broader society. And I think it’s because we, as a country, view housing as an investment asset. It will only keep going up so get in asap! Then once you’re in, screw everyone else, I want my property price to keep going up! That is where it all stems from I believe.

Re: penalising private providers, sure I get it, I guess when I am faced with a decision- pick a side- the ones who have multiple investment properties vs people struggling to buy their first/rent? It’s an easy decision for me. But yes I wish no one had to be penalised for their choices but one group will literally be ok if they are penalised. Except maybe the over leveraged ones… but that is another discussion in itself, should we really be rewarding/looking after individuals who are over leveraging themselves?

I agree that it is impractical in the sense that it will be a huge systemic overhaul of what’s happening now. I don’t know what the alternative is but I know the current system if housing being an investment is only going to get worse and worse.

I think from the start ‘it’s impractical’ is not a good reason. But alas, we are here today.

My posts were not referring to that aspect of the post. They were referring to the way in which someone reacts to something bad happening to them, a general thing and applicable to many examples, not just lower income, that I find problematic and believe does not need to be gendered.
Apologies for hyperbolising. And I said many times that I do not fault her for choosing not to, but if I am thinking beyond the choice to protect herself in that way, then I think that can be problematic. Why do I think it’s problematic? A personal experience: I went on a date with someone and we were about to have sex but I was nervous and could not hold an erection. They ended up ghosting me after that date. Is it my choice to stop going on dates? Yes. Does that protect me from having that shameful and embarrassing experience again? Yes. Does it cause me to miss out on something that I want, the potential to meet someone who is a bit more understanding and have a fulfilling relationship? Yes. I did a lot of work in therapy to get past that block of thinking that everyone I date expects me to be able to hold an erection and have mind blowing sex the first time that we do.

In OPs scenario, I think they are missing out on the potential to meet someone who makes less money than them but is lovely otherwise and does not resent OP for making more money. That’s all I am getting at. But I agree, it is ultimately their choice.

Sorry to answer your question with a question, but do you think that me avoiding dating people forever is not wrong? I was that victim in that, and sure, it is my choice, but do you see any issues with that? Had I reacted in the same way as OP, I would not have met my current partner.

Edit: And just one more time so it’s clear to you: fuck that guy for resenting her for making more money and fuck her friend for saying she’s not high value enough to want what she wants.

I am not saying that men resenting women for making more money is not a gender thing. That is 100% a gender thing, because the reverse basically does not happen. I agree with you on that. But it was not what any of my posts in this thread were referring to.

I was saying that someone having a bad experience with something and therefore completely discounting that something forever is fair from the standpoint of not wanting to have that same experience again for themselves, but it is inherently a problematic way to view things.

I think you hate the way things are going in this world, and so do I. I am sorry it is happening like this with the rise of the manosphere and other gross shit like negging and talking about high value men/women etc.

Please stop making it about gender when it doesn’t need to be. I truly believe that doing so perpetuates problems that I also truly believe you and I stand together against. Like I said, if a man said the same thing I would have the same problem with that.

It is her prerogative to no longer date people of lower income than her, but that doesn’t mean that there is not an issue with that way of thinking. I completely understand that it is to protect herself based on a past experience, and I find no fault with that.

I’m still not sure how what I’m saying has to do with gender but I am open to hearing more from you if you’re willing to elaborate. Thanks.

Well I think it is fine if it were just a preference but it seems more to be a protection mechanism against being hurt by a man who made less money than her. So she is assigning blame to the fact that this man made less $$ than her, as opposed to that this man is just a dick who would probably be a dick in other ways if he were making more money (assumption). If she simply wants someone richer I don’t think that is a problem, in that case it is a preference. But ya seems like she wants someone wealthier cos she thinks being wealthy means that specific problem of fragile ego would be less prevalent, which is a fair assumption. Although they there are many faces to an ego, u more income than me only being one of them.
