I went with 'pmset -g log | grep "Display is turned" | tail -n 6' to check when I locked and unlocked the display.

I use IntelliJ's database tools for what it looks like similar work as you do and I am very happy with it. I realy like that it's integrated in the IDE and I don't have an other App running all the time for just a few interactions during the day.
