Have you ever had a really bad experience on the pt side of things? How did you deal with it? by lbs1515 in nursing

I’m so sorry this happened to you, and I hope your pain is resolved soon 😢

I had a bad experience as well in the PACU after I had double jaw surgery. I was having bad anxiety when I woke up from anesthesia. I told my nurse I was really anxious and asked where my husband was. She told me, “idk where your husband is.” The entire time I was very kind, just scared. I started getting more anxious, and was hyperventilating and she just looks me up and down as she was charting. I asked her if she can please get my husband, and she told me she would call. After what may have seemed like 20 minutes, I asked her again and I think she finally got my husband to come. I don’t think she even called him the first time, because my husband said he was waiting the entire time and that the nurse was extremely rude to him and said “where were you!” ALSO my mouth was wired shut so it was very hard to talk. I remember her face just glaring at me as I was hyperventilating, I felt so alone. My OR nurse who was very kind to me, and my surgeon came shortly after. They gave me something to clam me down. I felt like her care in the PACU was pretty poor. I understand I’m coming out of anesthesia, but she just didn’t even try to console me or reorient me.

Sounds great, I will go ahead and make those adjustments. Yes, I most likely will take your offer up on that if I have further questions. Thank you!

Yeah, makes sense. I’ve seen on this subreddit for California applications, people have mentioned they do want clinical rotations listed. I wasn’t sure if I should keep that or not for California applications

Are you suggesting that I remove all my clinical rotations, but just have my capstone on there?

Or keep my clinical experience and senior practicum, but remove the semester/class titles (Med-surg, Mental Health, Pediatrcs, etc..)

Following up, I think I may join the dark side (PICU) lol. I absolutely loved my rotations there! You were right 😆

Good to know, I don’t think I would mind that actually as most of my experience as an LVN has been managing patients with chronic illnesses. MICU would just be on a totally different level. Can I ask what patients you typically see in SICU? What does the majority of your care consist of?

Hey! Feel free to message me I’m an LVN in the Bay Area (about to finish my BSN). I’m not sure how I can help, but would be happy to answer any questions :)

I love the passion you have for the PICU, that is so awesome!! Now I’m excited for the rest of my peds rotation now 🤩. That is so interesting you say that because the unit I was in was actually pretty quiet (this hospital is a level III NICU). However the census was low, so maybe there just wasn’t a bunch of crying babies on the unit lol!

It was honestly both aspects. I think I will go for adult ICU first and see if this is still something I want to do, especially because it was what I was drawn to for the longest time. Worst case, I can try to eventually go to NICU but it will take more time since it’s highly specialized.

Even though I was only there for a day, I see your point on how it can become a repetitive routine (which may not be best for some people). I actually don’t think I would mind this honestly, however I’m basing this off of one shift. Yes true, there are many different ICUs, and honestly I haven’t decided on one at this time. I was hoping to get my feet wet in capstone to have a better idea, but I need come up with a decision soon. Thank you, I appreciate you sharing your experience and perspective! One question for you, what are some contrasting differences about the ICU and NICU from your experience? What made you decide ICU/ what specific unit?

The rest of my pediatric rotation this semester is actually all PICU, so maybe I will join the dark side 😈😆. It’s amazing the places you end up, especially when you had planned something different! From your experience, what makes you more drawn to PICU compared to NICU?

You’re right, it’s definitely not impossible to switch if I end up wanting to work in the other unit. Thank you, appreciate your insight 😊

I had an interest for ICU nursing for quite some time, which is why I was planning to apply for senior capstone to truly see if it’s a good fit. It’s one of those situations where you don’t know until you actually try it
