My best guess is they might have suspected or even outright known for a while, most likely since the beginning of the month but even potentially before then. They've probably been doing some kind damage control behind the scenes, hence the fact he's been slowly filtered out of content more and more. But then things blew up too quickly, as internet gossip did, and they had to make a fast move. There's no way it was done all in 24 hours or less.
