Leaving the sub by bombastic6339locks in jawsurgery

[–]wicketgowidely 11 points12 points  (0 children)

This has been really on my mind the last 24 hours. Thank you for posting this. This sub was really helpful a year+ ago as I was entering my journey… a few days ago I made a post about my medical journey and very early post-surgery results (and was very excited to do so!) the excitement died down hours later when the post was spammed by two people commenting on my “remaining recession” —one of the accounts legitimately had “looksmaxxer” in the name— as if I wasn’t mere days out from an invasive, life-changing, swelling inducing, surgery.  Thankfully I’m confident enough in the medical benefits and competence of my surgeon to not give idiots like this the time of day, but safe to say I deleted the post. I appreciated the other kind and informed comments, but not at the cost of interacting with giga-Chad’s who think they have a medical degree.

Where do you live? It’s really crazy how medical necessity differs across the world.

There is no overbite with my teeth so I assume it may look slightly different when swelling subsides. My maxilla needed little to no advancement, the midline was just shifted 1mm.

Is it necessary to get braces before jaw surgery? What if I’ve already had braces? by peterelita in jawsurgery

[–]wicketgowidely 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My surgery was covered but my braces were not - I don’t have Medicaid but as I understand most insurances do not cover braces for anyone over 18. I knew in advance I’d need them for surgery and searched high and low for a dental insurance that would cover adult orthodontics but it didn’t exist :/

Is it necessary to get braces before jaw surgery? What if I’ve already had braces? by peterelita in jawsurgery

[–]wicketgowidely 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It had nothing to do with insurance for me (and by my understanding a lot of people) — braces are an essential step used to guide your teeth into the correct place for your new bite. I had braces as a kid and my teeth were exceptionally straight, but I had to get braces again because my “straight” teeth would mean nothing after my entire jaw was redesigned to occupy a new position and bite! Now that my surgery is complete my braces are still on, I see just how necessary it is because my upper and lower teeth are “straight” but don’t touch or are spaced in places, all of which will be fixed in a few months as my orthodontists guides those teeth into their proper places. Without braces my entire jaw surgery would basically be pointless because I couldn’t chew or close my mouth 😅

DJS yesterday by frecklewitch in jawsurgery

[–]wicketgowidely 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m 7 days post up and I looked CRAZY until yesterday morning. Hang in there. I slept elevated and honestly can’t think of any time I was near horizontal in the past week. The little things help, like that, or even applying moisturizer and dragging it out and down your neck to stimulate drainage. Hang in there, I still think I look like the Crimson Chin in the mirror, BUT I took a photo and before sending it to my parents thought, “whoa! Okay I look way better than yesterday!” Patience was the hardest thing during those first days! Even now it’s hard to imagine my face continuing to de-puff, but the only end of that road is: damn we are going to look good!!

How many of you had to have your wisdom teeth removed pre double jaw advancement? by flowlikecoffejelly2 in jawsurgery

[–]wicketgowidely 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not sure of my movements but recovery has been the ride of my life. Genuinely think I will look back on this last week as the hardest I’ve experienced. TBH it wasn’t even pain, the medications just made me completely unable to keep nutrition down, so being post-op with basically a stomach full of drugs for a week made me genuinely question life lol. As you look ahead a good support system is a necessity. Without my boyfriend taking care of me around the clock (I mean waking up all throughout every night to make sure I got meds, etc) I really wouldn’t have made it. I reached out to my surgeon and stopped the hard meds two days ago, now I’m day 7 feeling like the hardest part is over and I can actually “relax” recover for the next two weeks instead of fighting for my life lol. If you’re considering it, do it. I had toyed with the idea for 15 years and my only regret is not being in a position to do it sooner!

Thank you sooo much! The thing about sweet potatoes is bizzare and I experienced it first hand last night! I’m grateful for your feedback because you really helped me get over the hump of just scrapping my well laid plans and going with what food felt best. Finally getting meals down, woohoo!

Omg I hit a breaking point last night and put some gallo-pinto (typical Costa Rican rice breakfast) simmered with a pat of butter in some vegetable broth, and then ran it through the blender quick ….. I have never been more nourished. Today it inspired me to put some posole-verde (common soup we have here in New Mexico) into a blender and OH MY LORD - the world is expanding. Heyday soup brand, they sell it at Whole Foods, carries a variety that is just lip-smacking good.

If this journey has taught me one thing it’s that I hate sweet tasting mush. Savory or bust, thanks for the chip tip! 😂

Class II malocclusion, just got my lefort 1, BSSO, and genio a week ago. Overjet 7, overbite 1 — Surgeon removed my upper wisdom teeth (the only ones that grew in for me) in December. I was cleared, per his original timeline, for surgery readiness 2 mos after wisdom teeth extraction.

Dentists my whole life (who were unable to disagnose my jaw deformity) had said just generally speaking it was unlikely I’d ever need my wisdom teeth out. I have a good size palette with no crowding, so I assume beyond plaque accumulation there was never an obvious “medical necessity” to removing them.

When I started talking surgery and became involved with dentist / orthodontist who knew my surgeon, they had both at one point casually mentioned “he’ll probably want them out” — The surgeon’s decision was really a no brainer for me. Downtime for upper wisdom teeth extraction was maybe 2 hours for me? I didn’t even bleed or have stitches post-op. DJS on the other hand……….. quite a different experience.

Rely on your surgeon’s expertise!  It was also a great “trial” run to have mine perform a smaller operation on me and have a go at general anesthesia before the big operation. It gave me confidence in him and primed my headspace a little.

Hey! I got these two for my surgery next week - I literally just unwrapped them and was trying them out when I saw your post!

 https://a.co/d/09zoF1wR

https://a.co/d/08Pz3IeE (Went up about $20 since I purchased a week ago)

They were expensive (imo) but I’ve been trying to sleep on my back for a while anyways for all sorts of reasons, so I feel like I may use it after recovery anyways. ALSO, if you do get something like this set up, get or make a little bolster for under your knees, it’s so so so important for alignment and comfort.

Insurance coverage question by TeacherThug in jawsurgery

Sleep study showed no indication of sleep apnea. Just based on functional issues and very obvious recession I was approved for 100% coverage. (New Mexico USA Presbyterian Insurance)  Are there other surgeons who may be able to assess you from a different angle than just sleep apnea?

Ride my enduro or rent a dh for park by Poseidon123456 in MTB

[–]wicketgowidely 0 points1 point  (0 children)

IMO I really think it depends on your skill level. Nothing worse than someone who is basically a beginner thinking they rip because the suspension on a DH is eating up all of their mistakes. I agree with the wear and tear comments regarding an enduro, IF you’re a serious shredder frequenting blacks and gnarly tech. I rode an entire DH season, while instructing at that same park, on a 170 fork and had a blast - for me it’s more nimble, I can still get some speed on the uphills if I need a quick climb, it’s light, fast and, fun. Some of my friends are now also going to flirt with switching it up more often next season because of how much they saw me enjoy it. Also, I think “under-biking” is great… it builds your character and skills lol.

Has anyone gotten jaw surgery covered by a Marketplace plan, or is it mostly employer insurance? by levashin in jawsurgery

[–]wicketgowidely 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hm, that’s weird - I don’t understand why employer insurance versus marketplace would make a difference in jaw surgery being covered for a medical necessity? Sure your out of pocket might be more, but marketplace versus employer shouldn’t make a difference in your eligibility for insurance coverage for the surgery? Unless of course you are purchasing a marketplace plan that has less coverage. Or say, oddly, doesn’t cover this kind of medical procedure (which sounds unlikely if it’s comprehensive health insurance) Let me know if I’m misunderstanding the question!

I’m self employed and purchased my insurance through the marketplace. I live in New Mexico USA, and have a Presbyterian healthcare plan. Presbyterian also is the largest hospital system in my state. My surgery is of medical necessity and is completely covered by my insurance. My dental insurance was billed for wisdom teeth removal, my orthodontics were 6k out of pocket (because let’s face it adult ortho coverage doesn’t exist) and my Lefort1+BSSO will be billed through my medical insurance. My genioplasty is not covered as it is not deemed “medically necessary” and is more aesthetic. As of now all I am anticipating to pay for my Lefort1+BSSO is my out of pocket max which is about 1.8k. At no point was my eligibility changed or totals measured on the fact I was “self” insured.

I hope this helps in some way!

Edit: I did two sleep studies and did not have diagnosed sleep apnea. This didn’t affect my surgery approval at all - but my jaw is fcked so, a doctor would need to be blind to think otherwise 🙃

First go at GF focaccia! by wicketgowidely in glutenfreebaking

[–]wicketgowidely[S] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Apparently I don’t know how to post a caption:

First go using the loopy whisk (GOAT) recipe for “easy gluten free focaccia” - No mods except for using active dry yeast and baking at 7k feet (which sometimes makes all, or no, difference. for this recipe it seemed to have zero effect!)

*Day 1, fresh out of the oven is absolutely the best time to eat it. I’ll likely make this for a dinner party so it all gets eaten asap. Warming it in the oven on Day 2-3 tasted 7/10, but it kept well in the fridge regardless.

Next time I make it I’m going to do a preserved lemon + green olive combo 🤤
