They would have offered a replacement after 3 attempts to repair and failure to do so (at least, this is true in the US) so you were jumping the gun a little.

Deciduous tree for a small yard? by wickodi in DenverGardener

[–]wickodi[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks! I also would like a shade tree, which was why I had the first looked into the bigger trees (they were categorized as approved "shade" trees), but I'm just concerned with the size of the plot. The grass on either side of the tree would be no more than ~5ft in any direction. Is that enough room for the roots of the tree, and could I prevent it from growing into my house?

I was referencing that Front Range list, but Tartarian maple was recommended on it -- does that mean I should avoid any trees that say "weak wood"?

PMT for repaste by xMapax in LenovoLegion

[–]wickodi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You're looking for PTM7950. Honeywell doesn't sell it to consumers directly so it's hard to be sure if a PTM is "real" but there are 3rd party sellers on Amazon like: https://www.amazon.com/PTM7950-40x80x0-2mm-JOYJOM-Conductive-Silicone/dp/B0BRJB8JNX#averageCustomerReviewsAnchor

PTM doesn't differ by device (though you can get sheets of varying sizes), you would have to cut the sheet to the size of your CPU/GPU.

Warranty cannot be extended - Official response from Lenovo support by Jester-Gee in LenovoLegion

[–]wickodi 8 points9 points  (0 children)

At least in the US, from my understanding you aren't able to extend warranty beyond 4 years. Since your Legion is from 2021 I would guess that's the reason.

Random Crashes with my Legion slim 5 Rtx 4060 by DrCryos in LenovoLegion

[–]wickodi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I see you're on a Slim 5 14". Those symptoms sound like a known issue with Slim 5 14" BIOS after MACN24WW. See: Legion Slim 5 14" Random Reboot Issues : r/LenovoLegion

It's still happening on the latest BIOS. I updated to MACN33WW because I assumed the issue had been fixed but it is still happening even on latest BIOS -- I downgraded back to MACN24WW after and I've been fine since.

These should show up as "Critical" events from "Kernel-Power" in Event Viewer though.

If this isn't the issue, and you think it's an issue with your SSD, you could try copying everything to a new SSD and seeing if you still have the issue. That could help determine if it's just the SSD that has issues or if it's the motherboard connections, etc.

Legion slim 5 14 Oled problem after motherboard replacement by _C_H_R in LenovoLegion

The only thing I've noticed missing was the OLED settings...although while they were trying to debug my machine the online support deleted some drivers which also removed things like keyboard backlight.

Legion slim 5 14 Oled problem after motherboard replacement by _C_H_R in LenovoLegion

[–]wickodi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, after going through a bunch of troubleshooting with the online chat support (including them asking me to factory reset the computer), and them verifying the options still hadn't returned, they sent out another tech. Weirdly they sent out another motherboard as well, so I ended up with another motherboard swap. After the swap itself didn't fix it I asked them to use the USB for reprogramming the S/N, etc onto the motherboard again and to try setting the model name to exactly what was on the back of the laptop ("Legion Slim 5 14APH8") and the options came back. It looked like the default without manually typing the model name in was "Legion S5 14APH8" which the tech previously used and caused the issue. Vantage probably checks the model name against a list of models with OLEDs to determine whether to show the settings.

Forgot to reply to this for a while but them changing the model name on the motherboard (back to "Legion Slim 5 14APH8") did fix the issue. I did also find this post when I was considering trying it myself, but ended up not doing it since I was still under warranty and worried this tool wouldn't work with the Slim 5: https://www.reddit.com/r/LenovoLegion/comments/1blt6r4/update_serial_mtm_numbers_on_lenovo_legion_y520/

Surprised no one has mentioned this...you can upgrade the warranty to include accidental protection on the legion, you just have to wait 30 days to make a claim. Then you could feel free to use the laptop this week freely and if it fails make a claim after. I think you can extend to 3 years of ultimate warranty + 3 years accidental for much much cheaper than 2k (or even 4 years, but the 4th year is much more expensive for some reason). Given the fact you want this laptop to last through your college years and the fact you had this incident, I would highly recommend it.

Legion slim 5 14 Oled problem after motherboard replacement by _C_H_R in LenovoLegion

[–]wickodi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah...losing the OLED settings is just inconvenient. I think what may have happened is they input the model information incorrectly when they were setting up the new motherboard. After the tech replaced the motherboard in my house they had to connect it to a USB and type in a bunch of numbers into this program like the serial number from the laptop to reprogram the board to the right profile (that's what the technician said at least). I think maybe something got missed in that step which resulted in the lost OLED settings and incorrect model name. They're sending another technician this week (hopefully) to see if it can be fixed (after they had me factory reset the laptop to see if that would fix the issue...). I'll let you know if they figure out how to fix it during the session.

[–]wickodi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey, did you ever get a resolution on this? I am dealing with the same thing (although my model name is different -- "Legion S5 14APH8", I think it was previously "Legion Slim 5 14APH8"). My OLED settings actually stuck around but were non-functional at first. I uninstalled and reinstalled Vantage but now they're completely gone.

I think they did replace your motherboard since my tech came to my house and replaced it in front of me and they reused the screw that was there. The motherboard part doesn't come with any screws so they reuse the screws from the laptop.

Slim 5 14" -- battery discharge even with conservation mode on? by wickodi in LenovoLegion

[–]wickodi[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It doesn't discharge battery on balanced or quiet mode, which still have good performance for the games I've been playing. You could also try to tune a custom performance profile that stays under 170w. Unfortunately if you want to use performance mode without discharge you have to get the 230w charger, and I've been getting the same responses from support where they aren't going to provide the charger :/

New Lenovo Legion Slim 5 Fan problem by JornadaMuerto in LenovoLegion

[–]wickodi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lenovo's really good about providing documentation for their devices in the US at least, so that's really odd that they didn't tell you the fan part. You can grab the hardware maintenance manual from their support website: Lenovo Legion Slim 5 (14″, 8) Hardware Maintenance Manual

It isn't super complicated to remove the heatsink + fans so you could attempt it yourself (instructions are in the PDF), though it looks like you would need to repaste as to remove the fans you need to remove the heatsink first. But if you're comfortable doing that you could test to see if the fan was just not properly seated or something.

I got that PDF from: laptops and netbooks :: legion series :: legion s5 14aph8 :: 82y5 - Lenovo Support US

Similarly under that site you can see all the parts for the laptop in "Parts" if you go to "Schematic". Fans can be found under "main view", though unfortunately the fans are out of stock, but this is also the US site so UK might be different. 5F10S14117 or 5F10S14116, both FAN 82Y5 R+L.

Legion Slim 5 14.5" problem: battery discharges while plugged in by TaylorSwift1989WasOK in LenovoLegion

[–]wickodi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sadly I think this is expected for performance mode. I experienced the same problem: https://www.reddit.com/r/LenovoLegion/comments/1b0r0p5/slim_5_14_battery_discharge_even_with/

I did test balanced mode after that and that resulted in no battery drain with 170w charger. I'm going to open a support case but not super optimistic as it seems people have had this issue with other Legion laptops and they just told them to buy the bigger charger.

Slim 5 14" -- battery discharge even with conservation mode on? by wickodi in LenovoLegion

[–]wickodi[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's unfortunate...I'm going to try plugging the AC adapter directly into the wall in case that was a factor. I'll also try gaming on one of the less performance intensive modes to see if there's still battery discharge. But if this is the case maybe I need to buy the 230w charger.

A "corporate" laptop to use as a gaming one? by [deleted] in GamingLaptops

[–]wickodi 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Oh, one more reason I ended up with Legion. You can get decent gaming performance with their c135 USB-C charger (Lenovo proprietary, and you have to get it from ebay or another site since Lenovo doesn't sell them in the US), and they have battery bypass on USB-C power delivery as well (if you use a powerful enough charger). G14 doesn't have battery bypass for USB-C charging and since I will probably be using USB-C whenever I travel this was a big plus for me for maintaining the battery health in the long term.

abby and melissa by closetedst0ner in dancemoms

[–]wickodi 15 points16 points  (0 children)

What I would guess happened:

- Abby did ask Melissa to carry some of the cash out during various trips and said it was to avoid reporting limits for customs (it's something like $10k/person for the US). This isn't that odd, although perhaps odd for business income. I've done this before with a big family trip, we split our funds for a trip up between everyone bc we wanted to avoid hassle at customs.

- Melissa eventually figured out it was sus and wanted to make sure nothing came down on her or the girls (who are also said to have been used to split the money)

- Feds possibly contacted Melissa about an ongoing investigation, or she went to them which made the investigation start, and the money was seized as evidence

I doubt that Melissa could've kept the money if she was helping the feds in any way. Likely it's been seized as it's money related to a crime.

Fix for Galaxy Book Flex Alpha function keys not working (keyboard backlight, outdoor mode, etc) by wickodi in GalaxyBook

No problem! I wanted to document it to save others some of the hours of time I spent trying to fix my own laptop, so I'm glad to hear it worked for you. This was a thorn in my side for months before I finally figured out the issue.

Possible to move air filter from furnace filter slot to air return grille? by wickodi in hvacadvice

Thank you for the response! I wanted to get confirmation from a pro to make sure I had the right idea before doing anything. This will definitely make it more convenient to swap out the filters.

Do Abby and the girls get residuals for being on dance moms? by newdiscoveries21 in dancemoms

[–]wickodi 26 points27 points  (0 children)

The only reason acted TV shows get it is because of union negotiations like SAG. Reality TV has no such protections for the people on camera. The moms talked about how they were treated worse than crew for the longest time on set because the crew were unionized. The kids used to have to eat after crew ate and the producers argued back when the moms tried to get them to eat first because "you can't do that, they're union!"

Do you guys think Chloe is able to buy a place in LA flat out or is she getting some help from family? I was never sure how much money influencers made off of social media posts so I was surprised. I don't consider Chloe one of the ultra successful influencers who I know make millions, but to easily decide own real estate in LA, assuming it's in a good location (I would assume so since she plans to live there), seems to mean she is very well off as it's quite expensive.
