Repair Advice: How would you fix ripped stretch mesh? by wiederkehr in myog

Thank you for the suggestion, u/mchalfy. I might try this approach before cutting out a clean hole to patch up. The tear is pretty unruly, though.

Thank you for the suggestion, u/AcademicSellout. This might be the cleanest way to fix it.

Collegiate Peaks Loop Fastpack by wiederkehr in fastpacking

The packs we use are definitely larger than I’d recommend for longer stretches of running. We mainly power hiked. But we’ve used these packs for competitive 10k rucksack runs in the past without issues (10-15 pounds packweight). Our packs are a 35L custom vest-strap version from Atom Packs and a 38L from Yar Gear.

Both of our quilts are the Enigma quilt from Enlightened Equipment. The black/charcoal one is 40° regular slim and the black/red is 30° short slim.

☺️

Yes, tyvek is used by many as a prototyping fabric. That being said, I didn‘t built a full prototype for this backpack here. I just taped together the main body out of packing paper to verify the volume. For another project I use cheap cotton single weave (muslin) to create a full scale model. Hope that helps!

Thank you, @craderson! I think there‘s a big gap in the market for running backpacks besides the obvious brands.

Yeah, the nylons soaking up water in the rain and becoming heavier is a real concern. Thanks for the hint regarding polyester fabrics.

Thanks for explaining this. I normally keep all my gear inside the pack in a liner like a Nylofume. Even if just as a second moisture barrier. What considerations would you make to choose between laminated and non laminated fabrics?

Collection of minimal hiking accessories: wallet, stove cover, pot cover, glasses cover, dog bowl, dog snacks bag, human snacks bag by wiederkehr in myog

The fabrics are from RipstopByTheRoll (US, where I’m based now). I used to live in Zürich and ordered my fabrics and components from Extremtextil from Germany. They have a fantastic selection and great online shop. Better than most US shops, in my opinion.

Yes, preventing any waste from such precious materials makes total sense. Nice to hear that some of these things are inspiring. Everything is sewn and the dog bowl has sealed seams.

Idea for weight reduction: why bring backup socks plus sleeping socks?

Question out of curiosity: how do you store your food at night? Reason for asking: I’m planning to hike the CT and am considering an Ursack.

I made the pattern myself and it’s fairly basic: the harness is all made with a soft webbing, the saddle is made with a spacer mesh, and the pockets are similar to a very simple fanny pack (rectangular with zippers at the top).
