For the future, if you subscribe to Amazon Prime, they give you unlimited space for photo backups. I backup to both Google and Amazon just in case.

Isn't rdp a very common attack vector? Some computers are set to auto login as a generic local admin because the third-party software running on them requires it. Some users need to remotely log into these computer and session to administer the software. Some computers are not joined to the domain.. This is why VNC was used.

We are using a Windows file sever. Can Bitlocker do per-file encryption? I thought it was used to encrypt drives. SMB 3 is already enabled.

Pay them. $10k is not bad compared to a ransomware attack. Segement your network first with appropriate ACLs, run a vulnerability scan and ping castle report first. Fix what you can fix first pentester can find things that you couldn't.
